22 cupcake blocks from Bizarre Quilter

Well, I worked hard at quilting group this morning and now have a total of 22 cupcake blocks completed for the 4th bushfire comfort quilt.

Yesterday I went to the local H & M shop to buy single doona covers at $5 and $10. This soft cotton fabric is perfect for backings, sashings, bindings and it works out at $1.25 per metre or $2.50 per metre.

This is how the first pieces joined, and I don't normally use black, but it works really well with these blocks.

And this pretty print arrived in the mail. It was a ...

Busy week! from Bizarre Quilter

It's been my son's first week in kindergarden, and what does a mother do to distract herself from the separation, especially when he is the one with separation anxiety at morning dropoff?

She joins quilt group for the second day in a row. A different store today, I cut out batting, and basted backing onto the back of 22 blocks (need backing for another 13 squares).

It was raining hard, and I needed to stay in town in case the road was cut off from home to the kinder. At least I could pick up my 4yo, even ...

The rains are here from Bizarre Quilter

It's suddenly cooler here in Townsville, and the rash on my body is subsiding! Woohoo!

The centre panel on the flower fairy has been quilted. I placed this tea towel as part of the backing, because I do not know where this quilt will end up within Australia, and I wanted the person to know that up here, we have been thinking of them.

This is where the panel joins sides.

I have finished the entire top, just the binding to go.

As I was saying, the rains have set in, and we spent the morning running around the ...

Another large quilt finished from Bizarre Quilter

Ah, this Dick and Jane quilt is so magical! I have placed the motifs in multi directions so it doesn't matter which way it is placed on a bed or couch, it will be just right.

This is what I got when I asked the beloved to turn it around for a photo of the back. Hahahaha. He cracks me up!

And the label for the quilts has bene provided following Jan's directions.

To join these blocks, you can see a strip on the back also, I used a 2 inch strip folded in half on the front ...

12 more from Bizarre Quilter

Only one more block to make, and one to sell to help fund my purchase of metreage for sashings and backings and batting.

Hmm... blue or green sashings....

8 more blocks from Bizarre Quilter

8 more blocks brings me to a current total of 22 out of 35 for the first quilt.

I love this meditating frog, and so does my 4yo son. He was pretty keen "Make the meditating one Mummy". I hope there is some leftover fabric for me to make something for him too.

This is just the kind of quilt I would love gifted if I was beginning again...

Only 13 more to make....

These won't be distributed en masse until March, so we have plenty of time to stitch with love.

I would love to finish it this ...

Bushfire sewing: lots of links and what you can do from Bizarre Quilter

So today, I have realised in the last 24 hours I have gone through many many phases.

Horror, fear, indignation, abandonment, prayers, acceptance, submission, service and hope, hope, hope as I sew these blocks.

I am sharing links for anyone that wants to contribute fabric, wool, batting, quilt tops, QAYG blocks, orphan blocks, crochet squares or crochet blankets as comfort quilts for the Australia wide bushfire zones.

Australia on fire and the Oz Comfort Quilts group from Bizarre Quilter

It's been a scary, frightening, huge few days in Australia with bushfires all over the country, and one with 1,000km front burning the size of Belgium.

Totally uncontrollable, and mostly fought with volunteers, and volunteer funding.

It has brought out the best and the worst in people.

These days with so much online and social media, messages and information are sent much faster. Most people have access to the internet in one way or another. In 1997 I joined an online quilting group called SCQuilters (Southern Cross Quilters). They were on yahoo groups, and you had to read ...

Stringy, Pinky Quilt, QAYG from Elaine Adair Pieces

QAYG technique, not bound yet.  About 48" x 64".  The strips are various sizes, deliberately unplanned in order.

Back pieces are scrappy as well.  I filled in with 5 blue squares.
 Close up of fabrics.
I used sashing strips of 1 7/8 in, folded, for the front, and 7/8 in. for the back.  My white back stitches all fall on the outside of the white strips, but blend in with the busy back fabrics.  These measurements fit well with my quarter inch foot.  Most of leftover batting was used up as well as a lot of pink ...

#the100scrapchallenge from Sotak Handmade

Ever since our move in August I've been trying to organize my studio and all the supplies in the most efficient way possible, which so far has meant moving things around constantly. I think I need to take a little break and just see what works and what doesn't for a while and then get back to it again in a few months.

Last week though, as I was rearranging things yet again, I realized I have FIVE buckets chock full of scraps! I don't even know how that happened. I use my scraps all the time ...

Finally Off the Design Wall from Color Me Quilty

This quilt has been up on my design wall for months. It feels good to have it down and done.

Not only is it done, it's all washed and soft. Simon, of course, had to test that out.

I used Aurifil 50 wt white thread for the whole project - top and bobbin. Quilted beautifully.

Simon is pointing out one of his favorite blocks. I combined many of Leah Day's fills within some organic shapes surrounded with straight lines.

The front is fun, but so is the back. I just used fleece as the batting and backing, just two ...
