Current WIP: Violet Quilt A Long from Patchwork Sampler Blog

Oh, how I love a quilt-a-long. Maybe it’s because I want to make every quilt in the world, maybe I need the motivation of a schedule or maybe it’s just FOMO, I have a hard time scrolling past a QAL. A few weeks ago, Erica Jackman of Kitchen Table Quilting announced the Violet Quilt as her next QAL. I wasn’t going to join, but remembered a bag of scraps that would be perfect for this quilt.

Scraps from Blush line of fabric

These fabrics are from the Basic Grey’s Blush line by Moda. The original quilt I made from this line was ...

Well-Loved Ladies QAL: Prince's OR Princess Feather? from Nestlings By Robin

                                      Welcome to block 10.

www.nestlingsbyrobin.com

The photo above is a detail of
a circa 1860 quilt in my collection.
The quilting is gorgeous cross hatching, even
through the applique'.
So soft!

This is one of a few
variations on
Prince's Feathers I
have in my collection.

I have a dear friend in Illinois
that likes to go searching for
treasure (one of our favorite
past times when we are together)
and she finds the best deals!
On occasion I will get a
pic and a question mark
text from her.
This was one of those texts.

It is beyond lovely ...

Well-Loved Ladies QAL: APPLES from Nestlings By Robin

Welcome to block 9.
http://www.nestlingsbyrobin.com/lectures--workshops.html

The photo above is a portion of
a circa 1860 quilt in my collection.
The quilting is to-die-for triple rods, even
through the applique'.
So soft!

I call it Apple Basket but it
could also be a tomato plant.
Fun Fact about tomatoes...
They were thought to be poisonous.

This was purchased on my way
home from Paducah in 2017 in a
cute little shop somewhere in TN.
It is beyond lovely even with holes:)

Let's talk Apple or Tomato variations.

I haven't seen one like this one
in my studies but the layout ...

 Hallo Ihr Lieben,

Lectures & Workshops - NESTLINGS by Robin

The photo above is a portion of
a circa 1860 quilt in my collection.
The quilting is cross hatch even
through the applique'.
So soft!

I went to search coxcomb for
the plant information link and
look at this definition I found:
NOUN
archaic: a vain and conceited man; a dandy.
synonyms: fop · beau · man about town ·
bright young thing · glamour boy · rake .

I laughed and laughed!!
Not sure why but I did:)

So, this was purchased this from
a collector while in Paducah for my
appraisal training when I fell ...

Well-Loved Ladies QAL: Laurel Leaves from Nestlings By Robin

  Welcome to Block 7.

The photo above is a portion of
a circa 1850 quilt in my collection.
The quilting is cross hatch with
a FAB red applique' scallop border.
The leaves are done in
various green prints.

I purchased this from a collector
in Maryland who only collects from
that region so we have a lovely
Mid-Atlantic quilt in
the style of the day.

Let's talk Laurel Leaf variations.
There really aren't that many
variations as it is very straight
forward in design.
When one varies it does
so in the shape of the
red leaves at ...

block December 6th.
Gives you plenty of time
to catch up to us:)
www.nestlingsbyrobin.com
Above is my ca 1860
Cherry Tree quilt.
I loved it the minute I laid
eyes on it just for how
unique it was and
the QUILTING!!
Quilted in 1/4" cross hatch
with feathered wreaths
at the intersections.
OOH LA LA!

It came to me early in
my appraisal study so I
went to the professional who ...

Well-Loved Ladies QAL: Turkey Tracks from Nestlings By Robin

 Welcome to Block 5.

http://nestlingsbyrobin.com/lectures--workshops.html

The photo above is a portion of
a circa 1860 quilt in my collection.
The quilting is triple rods in the
background with echo quilting
within the applique' pieces.
This lady LOVED to hand quilt:)
I really love her winding border too.

Most often it was done only in red
and green so finding a yellow
and green is fun & different.
Sometimes it was appliqued
and sometimes it was pieced.

LOVE the border on this one!

block was Wandering Foot.

Well-Loved Ladies QAL: Pomegranate from Nestlings By Robin

Welcome to Block 4.

The photo above is a portion of
a circa 1860 quilt in my collection.
The quilting is straight lines about
1/2" apart along with echo in
the leaves and fruit.
Also fun to note that the cheddar
insert is pieced in NOT
reverse applique' as I had
originally assumed.

My first exposure to pomegranates
was from my grandma.
She loved breaking one open
and giving my brother and I
a section in a small bowl.
We would watch tv with
her and suck the pulp off
each little seed.
Very fun for a child!

My ...

Well-Loved Ladies QAL: Oak Leaf from Nestlings By Robin

 Welcome to Block 3.

The photo above is a portion of
a circa 1900 quilt in my collection.
The quilting is a nice job of
outlining the applique' and adding
a larger leaf in some of the open areas.

Everywhere you see white leaves
and vines used to be green but
the synthetic dyes of the day
sometimes faded away completely.
Again we see the familiar rosettes.

Welcome to Block 2.
The photo above is a portion of
a circa 1860 quilt in my collection.
The quilting is applique' outline,
leaves, rosettes, and a gorgeous
plant of some kind in the border.
The blocks are huge so I had
to reduce for my oversized blocks:)
Yes that is a blue polka dot
in the stems!!!
This is why there is blue in this
block only and I was just
as surprised as you may be.
