Julianne’s Star 9, 10 from Virtual Quilter

This project file is based on one block, but with the background fabric used for some of the pieces.

The seam lines between the coloured pieces are used as the quilting motif.

I prefer dark backgrounds for any star block, because I can only see stars at night when the sky is dark, though I do know that there are stars out there when the sun is shining.

12P Collection 3, 4 from Virtual Quilter

I find that when I start a new project I tend to use muted colours, a minimum number of fabrics, and concentrate on getting the contrast in the right places for the design to work. Working with pretty or bright fabrics the colours get in the way of getting the block designs done, and my focus is usually on getting a collection of blocks which work together.

If I decide to actually make the design I then go looking for the fabrics which will suit the room the quilt is intended for, the favourite colours of the recipient, or simply ...

Dear, Dear, Dear 43, 44 from Virtual Quilter

Lots of little blocks equals lots of design possibilities!

I love the second design, but if I was going to make it, I would spend a lot of time swapping colours.

Irish log Cabin OP 28, 29, 30 from Virtual Quilter

I have a lot of fun mixing unrelated blocks to see what happens.

I usually get carried away by the blocks and just go with whatever fabrics I find first, and promise myself that I will play with colour another day, but that day rarely comes.

In this project file I love the textures created by lots of little squares and rectangles.

My 8 Blocks 51, 52 from Virtual Quilter

Nice one, even if I do say so myself.

Love the second one.

Star for Selina OP 13, 14 from Virtual Quilter

One of the great things about living in a country town is the amount of stars we see. I grew up outside of any town, and they were even clearer from out there.

Have to admit that they are not set out in regular patterns like the ones in this project file.

Curved Cornerstones 56, 57, 58, 59, 60 from Virtual Quilter

Interesting! Courthouse steps, straight and curved, and sometimes the steps only go one way! (That might confuse the crook who is guilty as charged and tries to escape.)

I like the second one.

Another interesting one.

Every week I am amazed by the variety of ways Log Cabin blocks can be used.

I like the last design included in this week’s mid week retreat … but my favourite for today is the second one.

More Log Cabin designs mid week, next week!

Fran’s Five Patches 5, 6 from Virtual Quilter

Very pretty colours, and a rather nice design.

The second design is the same layout with modified blocks.

9 Patch Night Vision 13, 14 from Virtual Quilter

My night vision was to create 9 patch blocks which formed a secondary pattern when used side by side … and I started playing as soon as I woke up next morning. My next block sorting project will be to add the corners to the 9P blocks which have blank corners.

The one above uses three blocks, one with just pieced comers, the others with different cross style pieced in the bank spaces of the design used in the corners. Not all corners will work with all the cross style blocks, but it will still become a large collection of designs.

Logs on Point 71, 72, 73, 74, 75 from Virtual Quilter

Middle of another week already!

Second design is very interesting.

So is the next design!

Is it a four petal flower, or a propeller?

The one above might work with several colours instead of just two, but what colour combination?

I love the wavy border in the last Log Cabin design for this week.

As I added the deigns I thought the second would be my favourite, then the third, then the fourth … seeing them all together I have decided that that are equal winners.

More Log Cabin designs mid week, next week.

Red and White OP 39, 40 from Virtual Quilter

The white space around the centre block would need some rather creative quilting!

Most of the red and white series of projects were started in 2012, and to be perfectly honest, they need a lot of work to sort them out. All of them use the same twelve Nine Patch blocks, and I might have to start a new project instead, with a different set of blocks to round out the week of red and white designs, and cancel all of the current projects.

7 Patch Playtime 1, 2 from Virtual Quilter

Not something I would like living with, though to be perfectly honest I spend most of my time in the bedroom in the dark, usually with my eyes shut, so what it looks like wouldn’t be a huge problem, proving it kept me warm in the hours of darkness.

Equally interesting!

Logs at Lochiel 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 from Virtual Quilter

I decided to try some Log Cabin quilt designs in shades of pink because I have rarely seen pink Log Cabin quilts … or pink logs to build real cabins either.

Pink is not my favourite colour, but it always looks pretty and feminine.

In the three designs so far the small changes are making small improvements to the designs.

I am liking the designs more with each change so far.

The last design for today has a big change, and I like it a lot.

That is all for this week … more Log Cabin quilt designs next week, mid week.

Very, very interesting!

By comparison, I think the second one is quite boring!

Stars on Ramsey Terrace 5, 6 from Virtual Quilter

Love it!

This project file uses 15 very similar star blocks and I love how the individual blocks link with each other in designs.

Love the second design too!

A Homespun Finish from Needle and Foot

This quilt has been in process for quite some time. I finished the quilt top last March. The piecing was quite fun – I used two different charm packs from Benartex that both had a vintage feel to them. After sewing a 2 1/2″ wide strip to the top of each one, I sliced the block in 1/2 and flipped one side upside down. That gave me the rectangular blocks you see here. To add some size to the quilt, I sashed between rows. Finally I added a deep purple border all the way around.

I knew I wanted ...

Beetaloo Logs 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 from Virtual Quilter

Just Log Cabin blocks in this project file, no colour variations, but still plenty of ways to twist and turn them around.

So far all the designs I have in this project file are basically Barn Raising design with some twists.

Perhaps the builders raising these barns were doing a barn dance in their meal breaks!

I enjoy playing in Electric Quilt with basic blocks like these to see what can happen, but I don’t think I would enjoy making all the blocks!

That is all for this week’s mid week retreat, but there will be more Log ...

TNT Logs + 91, 92, 93, 94, 95 from Virtual Quilter

I love the first design today!

Not too wrapped in the second,…

… but change four blocks and I like it better.

Corners look tidier with less light .

Last design for today is interesting, so that is the lot for this week’s mid week mini retreat to look at some Log Cabin quilt designs.

More Log Cabin quilt designs mid week, next week.

Bundaleer Logs 31, 32, 33, 34, 35 plus Challenge from Virtual Quilter

How many ways can you arrange a collection of Log Cabin blocks with some traditional half light, half dark, some all dark, some all light?

As you can see by the numbers in the title, today’s selection from this project file the number will reach 35variations, which is about half way through the designs I have saved so far.

The Challenge part of the title today is usually reserved for a weekend, but I have been away and will be busy for the first two weekends of this month.

So this months your challenge is to play with Log ...
