One day I should print off three inch square red white and green quilt designs and hang them on a tree … which means I need another tree … and space to put it!

It’s the middle of another week already, and I like the first Log Cabin design but worry that the weeks are getting shorter. Not too mention the years.

The project file these come from has no new designs at the moment, but I might just find some time to play with some of the designs with the cross in the centre … I like all of these, but can see changes which just might make them better.

I think the second design is my favourite, but it will be interesting ...

Just a thought … Log Cabin blocks would be a good substitute for an autograph book, with the signatures added to the light strips, with the option of adding embroidery.

On second thought, I would add signatures to quilts with less blocks than those in the collection, but the general idea would make a great family heirloom in any size.

My favourite today is the second design.

Curved seams are nowhere near as difficult to do as people think … I use no pins and can put together the blocks for a cot quilt with 12 inch blocks in about half a day, including a coffee break, and in a one day class I have seen people go home with the same size quilt together, and they had to cut the pieces before they started.

These two designs use the same block design, but the colours have been mixed up a bit.

I am thinking that I should have saved this project file until next month … but I guess I can use it again then as the colours will suit the red, white and green theme I try to use during the lead up to Christmas Day.

Talking of Christmas, the design above could be printed out and glued to a pieced of cardboard and hung on a Christmas Tree!

I think the last one is my pick of the day, but I may change my mind after another coffee.

Pick a star block, and make some blocks as the instructions show, then make others with some of the coloured fabrics replaced by the background fabric. Note that some seam lines can be eliminated in th e background changes.

My favourite of these two is the second one, but it was a hard choice.

Nice, neat and tidy, with the sky getting darker the further from the centre.

The second one is much more interesting, and my favourite for today.

Interesting design, but it could use some fabric modifications.

Second design is much better, but could be better still … more play time needed in this project file.

The design above uses just one block, but as much as I like that block, there are ways to modify it.

Only four of the basic block in the second along with two modifications.

The colours in this lot would be lovely for a romantic break in a Log Cabin near a river or lake … especially a pink lake. (There is a pink lake down the highway from where I live, though it often looks brown rather then pink.)

First design is interesting, and so is the second one above.

I have been trying to work out which one I like most, but have given up … I like them all! It is always interesting to mix up the different variations of Log ...

Simple layout … but I love the effect!

I like the second design, but compared to the first one it is rather ugly.

The second deign is a bit too pink for my taste … needs more blue/purple.

If I make another all pieced quilt I want it to be as interesting as the design above … however I usually try to mix some applique into every quilt I make.

I would definitely replace some of the blocks in the second design with either applique, or blank spaces to be quilted.

Setting blocks on point makes the quilt bigger though you have to include some fillers around the edges.

Using some half of some blocks can add some interesting options!

New project, new blocks!

The blocks can be constructed using small squares of fabrics and some half square triangles, or pieces which combine the squares and triangles into larger squares and assorted shapes combining the squares and triangles. Note that there is a small sashing separating the blocks.

Much more colourful than the windmills being erected all over the place!

The virtual quilting in the design above I would do with a contrast thread, and in the spaces that look like they are not quilted, I would use similar quilting but in a thread to match the background.

I love both the designs today but I think the second one wins my popularity contest.

The first design is neat and tidy, but it might work on a tiled floor but not quite right for a bed.

Turn eight blocks around and it becomes a big star.

Back to the first design, but with four blocks moved out towards the corners.

Now they are all the way to the corners.

The final design for today has the four dark blocks from the centre moved towards the corners, and it is my favourite for the day.

There are a lot of possibilities when you start playing with even pretty basic Log Cabin variations!

A project file which has been in hiding with many others for quite a few years, with some simple but unusual designs using a lot of whole squares and some squares made with half square triangles.

Some of the squares can have a little bit of applique, or perhaps embroidery motifs on them.

The stars have been modified in the second design, and the applique is on a larger square.
