Squirrel Backing from Art In Search

Normally, squirrels race through here and get new quilts started off tangent. However, in cleaning off a counter, trying to get my new granddaugher's quilt moving along after a long stall, I found fabric from the Nine Patch Kit I made. I do not like the colors of the fabric and can't see saving and cutting scraps from it, so I thought maybe I could use it in a backing. Much later down the road, I found I made the whole back from leftovers from the Nine patch and left over strips trimming quilts off the longarm. It ...

New Beginnings from Sew Preeti Quilts

Me: I hope this year is a new beginning
Paul: All beginnings are new, by definition
Me: Unless it is old wine in a new bottle
Paul: Wine does not get old
Me: It becomes vintage?
Paul: Absolutely
Me: I am going to add some wine to the beef stew
Paul (with anticipation): You are making beef stew?
Me: After I finish writing this blogpost
Paul (naughtily): I can help you finish.
Me: BRAT.  Just help me take pictures of this big quilt top, will you?

When Via (not her real name) a dear friend/co-worker shared that she was ...

Leela from Sew Preeti Quilts

One week before Christmas

Me: If Dan has no other plans, ask him to join us for dinner on Christmas Eve.
Paul: Will do.
Me: Do you know what you want to eat?
Paul (excitedly): Let's get Chinese...like in Christmas Story.
Me (realistically): Are you sure Dan will be OK with it?
Paul: I dunno.
Me: Let's just do the regular turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes etc.  We can do the Chinese for New Years, when it is just us.
Paul: OK. Then let me pick up the meal from Harris-Teeter.
Me: How much?
Paul: $50 for turkey ...

Mermaids on Wings from Sew Preeti Quilts

It started with this fabric - cute and sweet. It is a complete escape from reality. Just perfect.

Cuteness

The concept was to frame the cute fabric and then alternate the resulting block with four-patch blocks. The four patch blocks were made from Lily and Loom charm squares.

Depressed :-(

I loved the mermaids and I loved the deep/rich 4-patch blocks but together they did not seem to work. It seemed dull and sad.

Something had to change.
I chose the colors from the mermaid fabric, cut up some 5" squares and put them up on the design wall.

Mock-up

Much ...

A Quilt of Valor with Frankenbacking from From My Carolina Home

This quilt came off the longarm about a week ago.  It is a Quilt of Valor, and was a bit more of a challenge at the beginning, as the backing had several problems.

QOV at FromMyCarolinaHome.com

This is what I call Frankenbacking.  There are four vertical seams and two horizontal ones.  The friend that gave it to me to quilt was so proud of herself, telling me she left the selvedge edges on for me to load it, and that she was able to use a pretty piece of floral fabric.  I was not expecting this though.  First, the print is directional.  Normally ...

Pandora's Box from Sew Preeti Quilts

Paul: There is a lot going on here.
Me: Yup. Do you like it?

A new finish

Paul: It kinda works.
Me: Doesn't it?
Paul: What is this one called?
Me: Pandora's Box.

Orphan Blocks

Paul was shocked!!!  He proceeded to relate the story where all the monsters (death and sickness) were unleashed and all that was found at the bottom of the box was Hope.

Gathered and Captured

I tried to (somewhat calmly) explain. I did not open the Pandora's Box. I did not release the monsters. I captured them and put them back in the ...

Picture this - About noon on Superbowl Sunday

Me: I am going to eat my lunch and watch TV. Do you want to join me?
Paul (reclining on the couch): Nah, I am watching the eyelid show.
Me: Ooh that is a good show.
Paul: It was greatly reviewed.
Me: Yup, I watch it everyday.

Later, during the 4th quarter of the Superbowl game
Me: I am done here.
Paul: Sup babe?
Me: My eyelid show is about to begin.

For the Eyelid Show

Here is a quilt perfect for use during a little one's eyelid show :-)

Linoleum Plus from Sew Preeti Quilts

Here is my first finish of 2020.  I am calling it Linoleum.

First Finish!!!

Try saying "a roll of linoleum" fast if you can :-D
How did it go?

Once upon time, a long time ago I wrote this tutorial.  Some of the resulting blocks became a part of Have a Minty Day quilt.  And yet others waited patiently to become something.

When I saw the Cross Plus Block, I had an idea. What if the colors are reversed?
Then my leftover tutorial blocks can be made into this!!!

All I had to do was find coordinating print fabrics.  Mystic ...

A Quilt for Eva from Sew Preeti Quilts

I met Eva for the first time about two years ago.  She is married to Bill who started out as a co-worker but ended up being a friend.  Since his retirement, they live in New Jersey.

On the Design Wall

Eva and I connected over our love of spicy food and gold jewelry.  When I showed her the first of the International Sister Quilt Blocks, her response was immediate. She loved them.

Setting Triangles

This was the first year I participated in the Rainbow Scrap Challenge and the International Sister Quilt Block was a perfect block for the purpose.

Rough & Tumble from Sew Preeti Quilts

In summer I was working on a scrap vortex quilt.

Scrappy Goodness

Green chair fabric came from Mell

Wonkiness Galore

Finished Flimsy

Pieced Backing

Turquoise Binding

Here is the finished quilt. I named it - "Rough & Tumble"
Bright & Happy

Does it have a story?
Hmmm... it has poem :-)

I dived into my pile of scraps - old and new
long strips, odd shapes and pieces askew
There were some cute scraps from Mell
I chased after them as they tried to escape and fell
Some fabrics scream and others just mumble
But they all fit happily in this Rough & Tumble

Kinda Brave from Sew Preeti Quilts

What is an appropriate gift for a young woman who is celebrating her high school graduation, her 18th birthday and is on her way to a prestigious college?

Kinda Brave

A quilt, of course.

Pieced Backing

Did I mention that she did all this while she was fighting a debilitating disease with multiple doctor visits and hospital stays? And she also wrote a book about her experiences and published it too.

Kinda Chronic by Ashni Sethi

Meet Ashni. Better still read about her book here.

Ashni's Mom is my friend, Manveen.
I conspired with Ashni's parents in making ...
