UFO progress and red, white & blue fabric play from The Crafty Quilter

My gosh, the end of June is closing in! I’ve been making some UFO progress this month for my 2019 UFO & WIP Challenge project. My Save The Bees quilt just needs a little hand sewing along the hanging sleeve and quilt label. This quilt is from last year’s BOM with Jacquelynne Steves. I’ll show full pictures on Sunday’s blog post.

UFO Progress for June is my Save The Bees quilt from last year.

When I went to pull some needles for the hand stitching, I realized that I had so many choices! I usually like straw needles for hand sewing my binding on, but I think applique needles might ...

Bobby’s Patriotic Sampler Quilt from Quilted Joy

Women, and some men, have been making patriotic quilts since the United States began. When we make a quilt with red, white, blue, stars, stripes, or eagles, we have made a patriotic quilt. Quilts of Valor and other similar organizations give patriotic themed quilts to veterans as a show of gratitude for their service. Bobby has made one such quilt, a patriotic sampler quilt.

Going Patriotic and Christmas from Grandma's Red Needle

To all Norwegians worldwide:

HAPPY MAY 17TH!

https://www.etsy.com/listing/233095321/norwegian-flag-mug-rug-quilted-red-white

The last two weeks have been very busy. I've been out of the house almost every day, running errands here and there and only had time for sewing in the late afternoons / evenings.

The Patriotic Mug Rugs in our shop sold out and I made a few new. For the back, I chose a red fabric with tiny flowers instead of the mottled flag red I've used earlier.

I thought I was done with Patriotic quilts for awhile, but after searching the net for ...

Patriotic Table Runners and WIPs from Grandma's Red Needle

Hello!
It's Sunday again, two weeks into April already. Where did this week go?!
Rain and thunderstorms today and Meteo has issued 'heavy rain warning' until tomorrow morning. No venture out in this weather and what is better than sew?! :)

The Norwegian National Day - May 17th - is approaching.

I have a few patriotic quilted items in our Etsy Shop and after selling one table runner last weekend, I've been busy making two more.

Cheri’s Patriotic Tumbler Block Quilt from Quilted Joy

Cheri is a loving grandmother and a quilter which means those grandchildren are each getting a very nice gift. She decided to make a set of tumbler block quilts for her grandsons.

Patriotic Tumbler Block Quilt

If I remember correctly, they each picked out the colors for their own quilt. This grandson choose a patriotic theme with colors of red, white, and blue, but antiqued just a bit. Therefore, there are a lot of navy’s, burgundy’s, creams and tans. It is a beautiful quilt with a lot of piecing.

Quilting Buddies Come to Quilted Joy from Quilted Joy

Quilting can be a very solitary activity. But isn’t everything better when you can do it with a friend? Here at Quilted Joy, we have five longarm quilting machines that we rent. We will often get pairs of ladies that come in together to quilt. They each have their own machine, and they’ll chat and help each other with quilt design and thread choices. This can be a super fun activity to share with a friend. Find yourself some quilting buddies and come to Quilted Joy!

Cheri’s Patriotic Tumbler Block Quilts for Twin Grandsons from Quilted Joy

Parents and grandparents of multiples can probably relate to Cheri’s dilemma. She wanted to make quilts for her grandsons. Normally, this would be a fun and easy project. But because her grandsons are twins, the quilts can’t be exactly the same and they also can’t be too different. Cheri, I can certainly appreciate your struggle! Cheri found a simple solution by making two similar, but different, tumbler block quilts.

For both of Cheri’s tumbler block quilts she used a muted red, blue and cream color scheme. Her quilts have their slight variation in the cream colored ...

Patriot Quilt for Love of Quilting Show from Quilted Joy

What is the oldest UFO (Unfinished Object) in your quilting studio? For me, it was this quilt which I made in the aftermath of 9/11. I was so distraught during this time of heartbreak in our country. The only way I knew how to channel all of that grief was through quilting.

Patriot Quilt by Angela Huffman

I decided to take the Patriot Quilt to demonstrate on the 3200 series of the Love of Quilting PBS show. Sara and I enjoyed playing with the many techniques this quilt has to offer.

Design Wall Monday - July 23, 2018 from Small Quilts and Doll Quilts

This week I added a striped binding to this doll quilt, in preparation for entering it in the Churn Dashers group showing at the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Show next Spring.   I like the added interest of a striped binding, and prefer it to any other binding.  This binding is cut 1.25 inches wide, and is single fold.  Next I must add hanging sleeves on all the doll quilts that will be part of this

Patriotic Modern Pattern Update 1 from Carol Lyles Shaw

Hello everyone,

This is the first in a series of blog posts inspired by requests from workshop and lecture attendees.  Some of you have seen and purchased a copy of my book, Patriotic Modern Quilts.  My sincere thank you for that!

These patterns are great for decorating for patriotic holidays here in the USA.  But some quilters have mentioned that they rarely (or never) make red/white/blue quilts.  So, I thought I would publish a series of Patriotic Modern Pattern Update posts showing some of these patterns in alternate colorways.  I hope these posts jump start your thinking about ...

It’s time to start sewing with some red, white and blue from The Crafty Quilter

It’s that time of the year when red, white and blue is showing up everywhere.  It’s also the perfect time to start sewing with some of that beautiful color combination.  I pulled some fabric to inspire me; I just love this mix of fabrics from my Bonnie & Camille collection.

I recently finished sewing on the binding (using my all machine binding tutorial) on this version of my Star Spangled Heart pattern.  It’s such a quick and fun pattern to make!

Design Wall Monday - May 28, 2018 from Small Quilts and Doll Quilts

The new puppy has kept me very busy since last Monday's post.  Thanks for all your suggestions on names, and after narrowing the choices down to a few, I had the eight grandchildren vote, and they chose to name her Penny.  She is growing daily, and seems much bigger than she was when she came to live with us a week ago.  I added the middle name Lane, to make her name Penny Lane, in honor of the

Becoming a Modern Quilter: Design Principles Part 1 from Carol Lyles Shaw

Modern quilt design principles are fairly new as an organized approach to quilting. So, it’s not surprising that many quilters are still somewhat confused.

Let’s start with the basic question I hear over and over from quilters as they show their quilts:

Is this a modern quilt? I don’t think this quilt is modern…..

This is the question and statement I often hear when talking with quilters I meet in local quilt shops, online or when I make presentations to guilds.  But, it’s actually the WRONG way to think about modern quilting because it’s a ...

Made By Marney’s Newest Designs from Made By Marney

One of my favorite quilt shops, Keep Me In Stitches, is showcasing my latest, newest paper piecing designs now through April 30. Visit Jacqi in Appleton to see samples of my newest creations.

Homeward Bound is a great quilt for Quilts Of Valor projects. It incorporates paper piecing, applique, and piecing all in one project. What a great way to use up red and cream scraps.

I love this paper pieced eagle. He is made from 2 square paper pieced blocks.
