Block building from The Academic Quilter

Hello all! How is your life going this week? We went on a small trip last weekend, which was fantastic, and we came back just in time for some thunderstorms that brought a lot of cooler weather with them. It feels so great outside! Plus, the cicadas are almost all gone. They left quite some mess behind, but at least they aren't dive-bombing me any more.

With all of that, I did make some progress on projects so far this week. A little while ago I pulled out an old project that I called "old and new" and I ...

A new project and an old one from The Academic Quilter

Hi everyone! Well, the cicadas are still with us, and now they are making very loud noises. Also, I swear they wait for me to come out the door and then decide to fly all around. Several of them have now landed on me and I managed not to kill either them or myself. I did freak out, though, and I am taking joy in watching the birds have a feast. Can it be schadenfreude if we're talking about insects? I promise to stop complaining about them now!

Anyway-- I started a new quilt project. Yahoo! Now that I ...

Scrap Dance Mystery Pachanga Step 7 from From My Carolina Home

Here we are again!! The seventh clue in our mystery quilt along is here!

I hope this doesn’t bring any tears, but we do need to make a few more HSTs. Using your 4-inch scrappy squares, pair with the 4-inch background squares. Mark diagonal lines on the backside of the lighter of the two squares 1/4-inch away from the center.

Sew on those lines, cut through the center, and press.

Square up to 3-1/2-inches.

Sew all you have for the size you are making. See my post on Chain Piecing HSTs for more detailed instructions.

Here’s ...

Freud und Leid from Grit's Life

 Hallo Ihr Lieben,

A Few of Our Favorite Tools from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

Last week, Kara filled you in on our upcoming Hopeful Flowers Stitch Along, and we were delighted by the interest. Our Facebook group grew by hundreds of eager stitchers wanting to learn some new embroidery skills! Thank you all for your participation; we hope you are as excited as we are to get started next week!

You will not only be able to use those new embroidery techniques in our Hopeful Flowers project; we are also participating in two Mystery quilt groups. As they are mysteries, I (Teri) can't say much, but you can join the respective Facebook groups ...

more grassy creek mystery from Making A Lather

Last week, I had the parts cut and 3 sewn for clue #3 of the quiltville grassy creek mystery quilt. I finished sewing all of clue 3.

I had a chance to cut for part #4. I cut and cut, and cut........ and repeat.

almost there

I only had time to sew a few quarter squares, and, then, added them to clue #3 on just one set. I find it takes a lot more time to cut matching and then sew in matching sets. I already find I was not mindful enough of matching the neutrals. And they fit and ...

grassy creek 2 from Making A Lather

Saturday was an all day sew day. And, I used the time to work on my grassy creek mystery quilt from quiltville. It seemed harmless enough... 25 sets of matching  blah blah blah. I didn't cut the pieces until the morning of, so, I didn't have a lot of time to think through the math. I just cut a bunch. I spent 3 hours sewing the pieces, and, I still wasn't done. 25 sets was actually 400 pieces. hmmm. I chained pieces in their sets, which was a little fiddley. I cut them after each set.

After ...

Something's Coming, Something Good! from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

Could it be? Yes, it could
Something's coming, something good, if (you) can wait
Something's coming, (you) don't know what it is
But it is gonna be great

Are you the kind of person who translates everything into song? I (Teri) confess to that odd trait; no matter what I'm thinking about, somehow an obscure song gets stuck in my head as I'm processing. So this week, as I pondered this post, the song "Something's Coming," from West Side Story, replayed in my brain. Why, you may ask? Because Kara and I have been ...

grassy creek mystery from Making A Lather

We had a sew day, Saturday, and, I took grassy creek mystery quilt clue #1 as a project. I had 1/2 of the sets cut, and, I cut the rest while I was there. I managed to get them all sewn. I didn't trim them until I was home in the evening. I pressed them, and counted them, and was short a couple of sets. I have them done now. May I say, again, as I did last year, I don't like the matchy matchy way of making a scrappy quilt.

I had shopped for a good ...

old world is a top from Making A Lather

I have a top for the old world mystery quilt from Quilted Twins. I really like it. It's big, so, I will need to find a back to continue with it. I have really enjoyed this mystery.

I am having a thermostat war with my son. Our AC has a 1 degree difference that is all the difference. One degree lower and it's time to crack out the sled dogs and mush through the snow. My son is a big guy and warm all the time, so he sneaks the AC down. I don't realize it, until ...

square dance finish from Making A Lather

I have a finish
From my Carolina home hosted a mystery quilt in 2018. It was the first time, I had tried one of her mysteries. I enjoyed it, and I like the result. It was easy to keep up with the clues, and, I had a quilt top shortly after the reveal, but, it has languished in the "to be quilted" pile until now. This one is called square dance. I chose to do the queen size. It finished at about 82 x 90 and used a lot of scraps.

For the back, I used a strip from a ...

unity clue 4 from Making A Lather

It started out pleasant enough, clue 4 for unity mystery quilt, required a lot of cutting. I like to cut.

The quilt needed a lot of HSTs. I like chain piecing.

But, this is when it gets dicey. Apparently, everything needed trimmed. I don't like trimming, so, I didn't. I started making the blocks, nine patch style, and they looked fine, until, I trimmed the whole blocks. I started making the rows, and, I was losing 60 % of the points. Drat. I couldn't live with that. I decided to take all the blocks apart. I realized that ...

mystery progress from Making A Lather

I am making progress on the old world mystery quilt from Quilted Twins. I haven't sewn as much, since, I injured my finger. I really like putting this quilt together. It looks complicated, but, it doesn't have matching seams.

I have been cutting scraps almost everyday. At first, I was timid about cutting with a rotary cutter, even though, It was a kitchen knife that hurt my finger. But, any sharp object gave me a little anxiety. I am gaining my confidence. The plan is to work on scraps for at least 15 minutes a day. Once I ...

new goals for July from Making A Lather

July is here with a whole new month of possiblities.
For my one monthly goal, in July, I want to quilt my snow days quilt and square dance mystery quilt from my carolina home. This was a 2018 mystery quilt.

I want to join my alpha letters into a quote and a top.

And, I want to organize and make a top with my Jamestown landing blocks. I started Jamestown landing in 2013. This project is in blocks. This quilt is a combination of HSTS and string blocks found in string fling book by Bonnie Hunter.

This will also be ...
