Submitting to Quilt Shows from Carol Lyles Shaw

Submitting to quilt shows–many of us love doing it and others hate the thought of competition.  Submitting to quilt shows can be fun or scary. In this post, I’ll share my thoughts on some of the factors to consider.

I’ve been focused on designing and writing patterns and haven’t submitted to many shows for the past few years.  I’ve had quilts accepted in many shows over the years–and even won a prize for an artquilt that was entered into an all media ART show.  I’ve also had lots of quilts rejected from national ...

Modern MiniQuilt Challenge: Connections from Carol Lyles Shaw

I love a good MiniQuilt Challenge!  And, the great editors at Curated Quilts Magazine have created some clever ones for every issue.  The current mini quilt challenge is Connections using the palette shown above.

The palette–cream, yellow, mustard yellow, navy, moss green, grey– is more muted than I normally choose. And, that’s what makes the challenge such a good exercise for me.  I decided to challenge myself further by using only 3 colors– grey, navy and yellow. I don’t often work with navy and wanted to explore it a bit.  The blue and yellow are Moda grunge ...

Meet Cute from Sew Preeti Quilts

I am thrilled to present Meet Cute. This is my second project for Moda Bake Shop and I am very happy about it.

Meet Cute
Unlike Esmeralda which was not for the faint-hearted, Meet Cute is easygoing and very adaptable.

Simple Block - 17.5" square

Large and simple block finishes at 17.5" square. This means that you only need 4 blocks for a baby quilt (36" square).  This lap quilt uses 12 blocks and finishes at about 53" by 70".

There are no seams to match, which makes it a an easy beginner project. Or a speedy one for ...

Selvedge X Quilt Pattern Published from Carol Lyles Shaw

I am happy to announce that my Selvedge X Modern Quilt Pattern has been published and is available on Craftsy as a digital download.

We all love to save those beautiful printed selvedges.  And, we really mean to use them someday in a special project.

Love the selvedges with cool typefaces!

This pattern was designed to put selvedges to good use.

You have two options for using this pattern:

  • Make this pattern as a minimalist top to showcase cool selvedges.
  • OR…make this pattern as a backing and use selvedges from the fabrics on the quilt top!

When you make ...

New Modern Quilt Workshops from Carol Lyles Shaw

I have two new modern quilt workshops to announce!  And, a brand new sample for a current workshop.  By the way, all of these quilts were made with stash fabric! #sewmystash2017

MidCentury Modern Curve Workshop: Newest Sample

I’m really pleased with how this sample quilt turned out.  I used a variety of white tone-on-tones for the background fabric.  And, I use some of my favorite E.E. Schenck Gelato Ombres for the color.  This workshop is proving to be quite popular.  I think it’s because it’s easy to piece and yet you can achieve some really complex ...

Solid Alternatives for Modern Quilts from Carol Lyles Shaw

Solids are a favorite fabric for modern quilts and many stunning quilts are being made every day using solids.  I think it’s great that fabric  manufacturers have given us a wonderful range of colors, tones, values and shades in solid fabrics.  We actually have hundreds of choices!

But did you know that there are many ‘solid alternatives’ for modern quilts out there?  Sometimes, I want to create negative space in the quilt that has subtle texture without using a true print.

I paired a vivid modern print with ombres and Grunge.

In progress shot–Mini quilt. Moda Grunge, Gelato ...

Maximalism in Modern Quilts from Carol Lyles Shaw

I love Maximalism in Modern Quilts!

modern quilts

improv block in progress

Since I began quilting over 25 years ago, I have always loved making tops with lots of vibrant color.

However, when I moved deeply into modern quilt design about 5 years ago, I started by learning about the minimalism and simplicity design principles.  That was fun and I learned a lot. See some of the minimalist quilts that I made in posts here and here and here.

Then, I decided to start moving back towards the use of color that I have always loved.  Where did my inspiration come from ...

Me: Look, look, these point meet so perfectly.
Paul: Uh Huh.

Me: Love when that happens.
Paul: These points seem a teensy bit off

Me: Who told you to look at that one? In any case, that is a reject.
Paul: Hmmm. So not all points are perfect.
