Wool mini quilts from Pieced Brain

The cool weather and a book with cute projects inspired me last weekend and I decided to work with wool. This mini quilt measures 7" x 9" and the recycled wool pieces came from three sweaters and a pair of pants. The simple embroidery was done with DMC floss. The osnaburg patch with the wording added a nice texture to the work. The background fabric is cotton and the embroidered Xs gave more depth to the project.

I liked it so much that I had to make two identical pieces except this one was bound with flannel. I used batting ...

A Little Something fun for wool workers! from Rosebud's Cottage

To say I'm in love with wool is an understatement! Not a day goes by where I'm not stitching on a wool projects ... or thinking of one I want to stitch! It's been something I've been doing since I was nine years old ... even raising sheep as a teenager because I loved it so much. Wool applique is such an enjoyable hobby!

I've been designing wool applique projects for American Patchwork and Quilting for a number of years. And I'm a licensed designer for Sizzix ...

Baby Quilts for Beginners from Pieced Brain

Look at the fun baby quilt I just finished! A friend just had her first baby and I immediately went to gather all the leftovers I had of these gorgeous fabrics from the Splish Splash collection by Gail Cadden for Timeless Treasures to make a project for the little one (Here is the quilt made with the same line). This cool pattern by Amy Hamberlin is very simple - it is your choice of fabrics which makes the design pop.

The letters are already reversed and ready to be traced on fusible applique'. I blanket stitched them and free motion ...

Modern Spools Sew Along - First blocks from Pieced Brain

I made the first two blocks for the Modern Spools Sew Along so I could answer some of your questions. Here we go:

1. You need to get Peta Peace's book A Piece of Cake - Sweet and Simple Quilts from Layer Cake Squares for the Modern Spool quilt pattern. You do not need to use layer cakes, however;

2. If you do not want to get the Needle and Notions book also published by Martingale, just look on the Internet for templates of sewing notions. Even though the book is for paper piecing, I am using the motifs for ...

Modern Spools Sew Along from Pieced Brain

[Edited]

Hi, guys! Remember my idea (mentioned on Instagram @piecedbrain) of having a Sew Along using the Modern Spools pattern from Peta Peace's book A Piece of Cake - Sweet and Simple Quilts from Layer Cake Squares published by Martingale? Well, I am ready to implement it - this quilt would look awesome in my studio!

It would be so cool if you participated, too! I am thinking of making two blocks every two weeks. For my version, though, I will include sewing tools as paper pieced blocks inside the spools! I ...

Piece and Quilt with Precuts from Pieced Brain

This book is a perfect segue to Pat Sloan's Teach Me to Make My First Quilt book I reviewed in my previous post. Christa Watson's Piece and Quilt with Precuts, published by Martingale, presents eleven quilt patterns made with precuts: they are beautiful, fast to make and teach you to use already cut or leftover fabrics.

Christa is well known in the quilting community as a prolific machine quilter and, naturally, Piece and Quilt with Precuts is divided into three sections with quilt patterns and instruction on how to machine quilt each project. Beginning with walking foot quilting ...

The Year Of Australian Quilt Book Authors from Blossom Heart Quilts

It has been an amazing year for Australian quilt designers, with quite a few releasing books! There’s nothing better than seeing your friends rock their business and achieve their dreams. So of course, I’ve bought them up along the way! And am sharing what I love about them with you today.

Australian quilt designer books

Let’s start with the one that’s a big favourite of many of my local friends – By The Bundle by Emma Jean Jansen.

By The Bundle by Emma Jansen

No, we aren’t playing favourite authors, but rather that we absolutely adore the photography in her book! As a fellow Victorian, most ...

How to Make your First Quilt from Pieced Brain

I am often asked how I began quilting, and I tell the inquirer it all began with a book (you can read about it in this blog post). If you are interested in learning how to quilt or know someone who would love to learn it, today I would recommend Pat Sloan's Teach Me To Make My First Quilt published by Martingale and here is why.

Pat Sloan takes the guesswork out of the basics about quilting beginning with important information about the sewing machine all the way to how to make (and finish!) your first quilt, including how ...
