Remembering Ellie from With Strings Attached

The Magpies are remembering Ellie Fellers who passed away February 19 at her home in New Gloucester, Maine.   Here is her obituary.

We had a Zoom call with her earlier in the month.  She was weak but very alert.  We are so glad that we got to say goodbye.

I met Ellie in the late 1980's when I worked at the Auburn (ME) Public Library.    She was the New Gloucester reporter for the Lewiston Sun-Journal, covering town, school, and library board meetings. She also edited a feature called SunSpots where people could write in to promote events or to ...

Friday check in: welcome autumn! vintage finds, OMG all set, and something new from With Strings Attached

It's gotten so that if I don't take a good walk at least every other day I really feel it! This week we went to Sedge Meadow/Des Plaines River Trail and Illinois Beach / Camp Logan.

Top: compass flower, snakeroot, false Solomon's Seal (b.erries). Center: goldenrod, fungi, riverbank grapes. Bottom: white heath aster and skyblue aster, New England aster, butterfly weed (can you see how the spent stems make a whorl?).

Isn't this the coolest souvenir tablecloth ever??? I got it for $3 at a church rummage sale.  The midcentury graphics are terrific!

It has ...

Weekly update: a meetup, variable stars, and scrap sorting from With Strings Attached

Lizzy accompanied her husband to a conference in Chicago last week. She had a free day Thursday and came up for a visit.   We met on the Usenet newsgroup Rec.Crafts.Textiles.Quilting in the late 1990's. It was such fun to meet her in person!   We enjoyed lunch, a tour of Zion, and a nice walk at Illinois Beach State Park.

The weather on Friday was ideal for the 22nd Annual Jack McElmurry Golf Outing -- our Rotary Club's big fundraiser.

I bought $20 worth of tickets for the 50/25/25 raffle (50% to the club and ...

The call of the Magpie from Bizarre Quilter

When I listed this at the facebook group: The Spiritual Co-Op Group online market, I dind't know it would sell within the first 7 minutes of listing!

It's one of those one of a kind pieces, I ordered one fabric and it just came to life after I stitched it.

It was bought by a dear soul who will use it to cast runes upon. She connects with magpie spirit animal.

I can even hear magpies singing in my head now as I type this.

Spirit animals are a very powerful concept.

I wish I could order more ...

Magpie meet up, now and then from With Strings Attached

The Magpies met by Zoom this week.  Maine, Massachusetts, Ontario, Virginia, Illinois, Nebraska, Oregon, British Columbia (x 2), and Western Australia.   Liz is newest Magpie -- in memory/honor of her mother Celia who passed away last fall.

Twenty years ago this month (August 10-12, 2001) the Magpies met up in Kansas City for a weekend of friendship, quilting, and some adventures. I dug out some photos. We haven't changed that much, have we?

front: Jean, Chris

center: Anna, Celia

back: Janet, Stacey, Nann, Verdi, Tami

We're pretty sure that Verdi made the quilt.

Upper left: a group went ...

Dark blue is the July color for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge.

This year I  am making 16 framed four-patch blocks each month. They're 5.5" unfinished.

I'm also participating in Joy's Table Scraps Challenge with two potholders in the monthly color.

Remembering Celia from With Strings Attached

A hole was torn in the fabric of the Magpies' nest when Celia  Brown passed away on Friday, September 11.  In August she had surgery and developed unexpected and severe complications.

Fort Worth, 2016: stockyards tour on a rainy day

We met on in the mid-1990's on RCTQ, the rec.crafts.textiles.quilting newsgroup. Along with two dozen other RCTQ regulars we created the Magpies in order to chatter to our hearts' content. We've become a close-knit group with regular biennial in-person meetups -- this year in February. We were right on time to celebrate Celia's 81st birthday ...

TexFestDos and QuiltCon from With Strings Attached

The Magpies flocked together in Texas last week for our biennial in-person meet up (called TexFestDos because we had TexFest in 2016).  QuiltCon was in Austin. Our hostesses live in San Marcos and New Braunfels. They provided both quilty inspiration and hospitality.

Most of us arrived on Wednesday, either to San Antonio or Austin (that was Anna and me).

Carla and Gary's ca. 1900 farmhouse southeast of San Marcos was our central meeting place.

There were 16 of us from Maine, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Illinois (two), Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, California, British Columbia, and Texas (five). Two friends from Colorado ...

Fabric blog tour, Taking Flight Fabrics from Wehago Desings

leftovers

Well it is here!  My Turn for Fabric Blog Tour!

Good morning everyone!

This is so exciting to do a final reveal and show you the process of my quilt!

I am so thankful to Amanda Brandl for inviting me to do this tour and for KandKfabric for giving me this awesome fabric to play with.  Amanda has designed two ranges of fabric - Taking Flight and Bush Gum Blossums.  These are her first ranges to be launched onto the market.  I know others have said this, but I can't say it enough, it is such high quality fabric ...
