Eye Contact: Creating a Connection  Every two years, Sacred... from Living Water Quilter

Eye Contact: Creating a Connection

Every two years, Sacred Threads has a national quilt and fiber art exhibit. Barbara Hollinger, curator of Sacred Threads created a special installation, Eye Contact: creating a connection, for the 20th Sacred Threads.

I decided to combine the special installation parameters with the Island Batik ambassador Artsy Fartsy challenge.

NOTE: As an Island Batik ambassador I was given the fabric for this project and Aurifil provided the thread.

image

The challenge required ambassadors to use three provided spools of Aurifil thread. I received 12, 28 and 50 weight threads.

The heaviest thread, 12wt, emphasizes the silhouetted ...

On-the-Go Tote

There are many uses for totes. For makers, each tote is an opportunity to add fun accents, functional details and learn new sewing techniques.

For Island Batik Ambassadors, the June project inspiration is, Try It!   So….I decided I “needed” another tote bag.  This time, I wanted to add never tried accents, hardware and a zippered pocket.

NOTE: As an Island Batik Ambassador, the fabric to make the tote bag was given to me by Island Batik. Also, CT Publishing supplied the Kraft-tex.

This is the first time I’ve added a zippered pocket, a hook and D-ring ...

Kraft-tex Sampler Projects

I’m falling in love with kraft-tex!  The hand-dyed and prewashed sampler pack is a perfect introduction to this fun paper product that sews like fabric.

There is plenty of inspiration in kraft-tex Style. Complied by Roxane Cerda, the book has several “get-started” beginner projects.

NOTE: I am a CT Publishing kraft-tex ambassador and affiliate. They provided the kraft-tex paper fabric for the projects below.

With one 8.5 x 11 sheet I made Betsy La Honta’s free coin purse pattern and three bookmarks. I used Island Batik fabric accents on all.

Use the Fat Quarter Shop 30 degree Starburst ruler  or the template included in the free block pattern to cut the shapes for the star points.

Vintage Reimagined Quilt Challenge

Happy Dance is a new quilt design with a modern interpretation of the vintage block, Drunkard’s Path. It features Island Batik’s Check it Out fabric by Kathy Engle.

NOTE: Island Batik provided fabric for this project as part of the ambassador program.

Reinterpreting the very popular Drunkard’s Path quilt block for the Island Batik ambassador challenge was opportunity to practice curve piecing. I used Accuquilt’s Drunkard Path die. Banner Over Me is Love

Over the years, I have watched my sister’s love for her children in action. She, like many mothers, offer their lives in time, energy, devotion and many untold sacrifices because of love.

For the February Island Batik Ambassador challenge, I designed a banner. Have your heard or read the words, “His banner over me was love”?  A love banner is a public declaration of love.

image

A heritage of love flows and continues with my sister’s first granddaughter, Ariah and her parents, Amanda and Darnell. Ariah, 7 months-old, had her first Christmas in 2018 ...

Amanda’s Fidget Quilt

Making a child-like activity quilt for my 85-year-old mother, Amanda, was wonderful and emotionally difficult at the same time. Amanda, is a retired nurse, mother of five, grandmother of 10 and great-grandmother of four.

She has vascular dementia.

image

Cookie, my sister and Amanda’s full-time caregiver, requested I make our mother a fidget quilt to help ease dementia anxiety.

So, I began with Island Batik’s Crystal Ball 10-inch pre-cut  fabric stack. I’m thankful for the generosity of Island Batik, which provided the fabric as part of the Island Batik Ambassador program.

A Home for Fabric Scraps

Even slivers of Island Batik Paisley Dot fabric have a home. AccuQuilt heart, butterfly, star and flower die waste are now artful mug rugs.

image

There was a good amount of fabric leftover after cutting these fun shapes. So, I had an idea to use my Olfa Rotary Cutter with pinking blade to echo trim the fused fabric.

image

Next, to keep it simple, I selected contrasting 10-inch squares from the Paisley Dots pre-cut Stack. Even thought the slivers of fabric are fused to the fabric, I chose to quilt the mug rugs with numerous straight ...
