Banner Over Me is Love

Over the years, I have watched my sister’s love for her children in action. She, like many mothers, offer their lives in time, energy, devotion and many untold sacrifices because of love.

For the February Island Batik Ambassador challenge, I designed a banner. Have your heard or read the words, “His banner over me was love”?  A love banner is a public declaration of love.

image

A heritage of love flows and continues with my sister’s first granddaughter, Ariah and her parents, Amanda and Darnell. Ariah, 7 months-old, had her first Christmas in 2018 ...

Amanda’s Fidget Quilt

Making a child-like activity quilt for my 85-year-old mother, Amanda, was wonderful and emotionally difficult at the same time. Amanda, is a retired nurse, mother of five, grandmother of 10 and great-grandmother of four.

She has vascular dementia.

image

Cookie, my sister and Amanda’s full-time caregiver, requested I make our mother a fidget quilt to help ease dementia anxiety.

image

So, I began with Island Batik’s Crystal Ball 10-inch pre-cut  fabric stack. I’m thankful for the generosity of Island Batik, which provided the fabric as part of the Island Batik Ambassador program.

2019 Island Batik Ambassador

I am thrilled and honored to be an Island Batik Ambassador for 2019!  The Ambassador program begins February 2019 and runs through January 2020.

image
image

Twice during the program, Ambassadors receive a BIG  box of fabrics and quilting supplies from industry partners. A few weeks ago, a box from Island Batik arrived first.  Then, we had a BIG surprise and received a box from AccuQuilt.

image

Each Island Batik box contains “Surprise” fabric. Surprise fabric is new NEVER seen fabric collections that will be revealed in blog hops twice a year.

We each received Island batik pre-cuts.  Plus ...

A Home for Fabric Scraps Even slivers of Island Batik Paisley... from Living Water Quilter

A Home for Fabric Scraps

Even slivers of Island Batik Paisley Dot fabric have a home. AccuQuilt heart, butterfly, star and flower die waste are now artful mug rugs.

image

There was a good amount of fabric leftover after cutting these fun shapes. So, I had an idea to use my Olfa Rotary Cutter with pinking blade to echo trim the fused fabric.

image

Next, to keep it simple, I selected contrasting 10-inch squares from the Paisley Dots pre-cut Stack. Even thought the slivers of fabric are fused to the fabric, I chose to quilt the mug rugs with numerous straight ...

Island Batik Getaway - A Life Saver Quilt

The Island Batik Ambassadors are so glad you have embarked on the month-long Island Batik Getaway.

Last July, as Ambassadors, we received a box filled with Island Batik fabric. It included a large gift wrapped bundle of “surprise” fabric.  My Island Batik “surprise” bundle is 20 fabrics from the Flea Market collection. (bottom right)

image

The Getaway challenge is to include as many of the “surprise” fabrics in one quilt as we can. Using Electric Quilt 8, I designed a quilt that includes 15 fabrics from the Flea Market collection. Thanks Island Batik for ...

Whimsical Winter Table Runner

The theme for the Island Batik Ambassador December challenge is Whimsical and Wonky.  The  Island Batik supplied Alpine Ice 10-inch stack of pre-cuts is perfect for my Whimsical Winter table runner.

image

Two traditional quilt blocks, the Churn Dash and Snowball, are constructed with wonky and random patches. The Churn Dash has Alpine Ice trees. The Snowball blocks feature Island Batik Blender, Ravine.

image

Stars fill the center of the Churn Dash and  wonky snowflakes fill the Snowball blocks. The Westalee Design mini Crosshair Square, top left image, helps mark evenly spaced reference lines quickly and accurately.

Fast and Easy Christmas Stocking

Easy quilt projects for Christmas are on the top of “Christmas to do lists”.  June Tailor gave me a few Quilt-As-You-Go stocking so I could experiment and have fun.

The batting is pre-printed with seam guides for 2.5-inch fabric strips. The package includes step-by-step cutting and piecing instructions. Visit June Tailor’s YouTube Channel to view videos of this fun technique.

image

I used fabrics from Island Batik’s new Candy Cane Lane collection. Of course, I had to add some ruler quilting after the strips were quilted to the batting and backing. One pieced ...

Ripple,  A One Block Mini Quilt

It was fun designing the October Island Batik Ambassador project. Ripple, designed in Electric Quilt 8 is part of series of one block quilt designs.

image

Since Ripple has exaggerated flying geese, piecing require templates or foundation paper-piecing. I choose to foundation paper-piece the blocks. I like and use newsprint. Amazon sells 500 sheet pack for only $9!  That’s a lot of paper-piecing. :D

Power Lines - A Ruler Quilting Workshop

I am thrilled to share my new ruler workshop, Power Lines. The workshop features designs and techniques using ONE acrylic free-motion quilting ruler. Power Lines is a foundational ruler quilting workshop. We explore basic ruler quilting techniques, straight and curved line designs. Some of the designs learned are featured HERE.

To make it a fun and easy one-day workshop, I’ve designed two pre-printed panels exclusively for the workshop. The 16-inch square panels are designed so you, the quilter, can apply techniques and designs learned in the workshop to a fun mini quilt that ...

Quilt As You Go with June Tailor

Have you heard about June Tailor’s Quilt As You Go batting projects? June Tailor gave me a few of the batting projects for some playtime in my studio. So, I decided to have some quilting fun and use fabrics from a new Island Batik Fall collection.

It is a great way to use your fabric scraps and precuts. I used fabric scraps from the Dear William collection to make the mug mat. As an Island Batik Ambassador, I am given fabric by Island Batik.

Abundance - Secondary Pattern Challenge

Abundance was designed in early June for the Island Batik Ambassador July challenge, Secondary Pattern . I am thankful for the generosity of Island Batik, who supplied the fabric that helped moved Abundance from digital design to quilt.

image

Truth be told, I am hooked on designing now that I have dived into the deep end of the design pool. I still have a lot to learn. I am learning new skills with each pattern. One lesson is learning how to design with fabric selection and prominence the goal and free-motion quilting in a supporting role.

In addition ...

 Modern Decor

When my niece, Amanda and her husband, Darnell, came for a visit a few months ago they requested I make a pillow.  The young couple have been diligently making their house a home.

image

Before I made their pillows, (pictured above), I did a little experimenting with stitch patterns.  The fabric was the inspiration for the surface thread design so any added elements should be simple and elegant.

image

After I finished her pillows, I decided to experiment a little more and use the new Westalee Design Decorative Ruler Foot to stitch rattail cord. The black cord was used to ...
