Braided Tote Remix

Fat Quarter Shop is hosting a Jolly Braid Tote Remix  It’s an opportunity to get acquainted or see the Jolly Braid tote in a new light.

With the Fat Quarter Shop provided Jolly Braid Tote pattern and Triangles on a Roll Fat Jelly Braid and Island Batik provided Stash Builder 5-inch fabric rolls I made a tote bag and a matching zippered pouch.

Stitching up the tote with paper guided braid pattern is quick and easy. Watch Fat Quarter Shop’s video tutorial for step-by-step instructions.

Calendar Cover

Often, a need will drive a maker’s project list. Since my monthly pocket planner needed a new cover and the business cards needed a holder I decided to make both with kraft-tex.

NOTE: CT Publishing provided kraft-tex for this project.

I selected a hand-dyed and pre-washed designer kraft-tex.  It’s available in 12 colors. This is Marsala.

I don’t have a large stamp collection(yet) but I’m so glad I found these personal stamps from my early days as a photographer.  I used archival ink and set the ink with a hot and dry iron ...

On-the-Go Tote

There are many uses for totes. For makers, each tote is an opportunity to add fun accents, functional details and learn new sewing techniques.

For Island Batik Ambassadors, the June project inspiration is, Try It!   So….I decided I “needed” another tote bag.  This time, I wanted to add never tried accents, hardware and a zippered pocket.

NOTE: As an Island Batik Ambassador, the fabric to make the tote bag was given to me by Island Batik. Also, CT Publishing supplied the Kraft-tex.

This is the first time I’ve added a zippered pocket, a hook and D-ring ...

Color Wave is a colorful two-block pattern.  It was designed with Island Batik’s cheerful Mermaid Cove fabric collection.  Mermaid Cove’s color palette soothes like a cool breeze. View the entire collection in the Spring/Summer catalog.

Island Batik provided the fabric for Color Wave.  Look out for Color Wave as it travels in Island Batik trunk shows at quilt shops selling Island Batik.

I use Electric Quilt 8 (EQ8) to design and preview fabrics to achieve a pleasing color combination. With EQ8, users can printout the quilt on a home printer. I like to have a printout on ...

Vintage Reimagined Quilt ChallengeHappy Dance is a new quilt... from Living Water Quilter

Vintage Reimagined Quilt Challenge

Happy Dance is a new quilt design with a modern interpretation of the vintage block, Drunkard’s Path. It features Island Batik’s Check it Out fabric by Kathy Engle.

NOTE: Island Batik provided fabric for this project as part of the ambassador program.

image

Reinterpreting the very popular Drunkard’s Path quilt block for the Island Batik ambassador challenge was opportunity to practice curve piecing. I used Accuquilt’s Drunkard Path die. Precisely cut shapes with notches helps achieve better piecing results. In the end, I still had to trim each block. I’ll do better ...

2018 Island Batik Ambassador  Review

I am (almost) speechless.  My first year as an Island Batik Ambassador has been, no kidding, life changing.  Island Batik gave each ambassadors two large boxes filled with fabrics and goodies from industry partners.

image

The combined generous supply of Island Batik fabrics and products from industry partners, Aurifil and Hobbs Batting, gave me the resources  to try new quilting challenges and make quilts, totes, pillow, postcards and more.

Let’s review the Island Batik Ambassador year in pictures. It includes monthly challenges, some just because projects and pattern releases.

Abundance - Secondary Pattern Challenge

Abundance was designed in early June for the Island Batik Ambassador July challenge, Secondary Pattern . I am thankful for the generosity of Island Batik, who supplied the fabric that helped moved Abundance from digital design to quilt.

image

Truth be told, I am hooked on designing now that I have dived into the deep end of the design pool. I still have a lot to learn. I am learning new skills with each pattern. One lesson is learning how to design with fabric selection and prominence the goal and free-motion quilting in a supporting role.

In addition ...

Windings Ways - Modern Vintage Part 2

There are several phases to making a quilt. Each phase has many steps. The phases are fabric selection, the quilt top pattern design and finally, the surface quilting design. Each of these can be simultaneously challenging and fun.

image

Selecting  Southern Blooms and Neutral Vanilla  was indeed fun!  As an Island Batik Ambassador, several gorgeous fabrics we given to me for the April challenge - Looking Back, Vintage Quilts Inspiring New Creations.

Selecting the thread for free-motion quilting is also fun and challenging. Should the thread blend or contrast with the fabric? I choose Aurifil 50wt ...

Line Drawing with Thread - Third in a Series

The Butterfly is third in a series of Line Drawing with Thread mini quilts.  Have you seen the tree, Abide and The Ladybug? Have you noticed they are all on a Log Cabin block? While it’s a series of stories on the garden it is also a study on Log Cabin blocks and different free motion quilting techniques.

The Butterfly is stitched on a Log Cabin where the center fabric is BIG surrounded on three sides with narrow strips. The traditional Log Cabin has a small center square that is historically ...
