Our Final Post Here... from Val's Quilting Studio

The hum of my sewing machines seem to almost echo in the empty house as the final quilt got quilted....
...and another got binding sewn on.

I thought Jackson looked a little sad until I realized while I was ironing that he in fact just couldn't find a comfy place to rest! Poor guy! I felt so bad. With no dog bed of his own nor couch to rest upon...
he finally found a cozy spot in the quilt I was binding. Smart puppy.

As many of you know, hubby and I have been downsizing this year and as ...

One More Charity Finish... from Val's Quilting Studio

One more finish for the Carolina Hurricane Quilt Project.
This quilt top was sent to me from a fellow quilter to finish for the project.
I love the rainbow of Kaffe fabrics against the crisp white background don't you!

I found a purple patterned backing and had enough left over to use it for the binding too.
The rainbow of happy colors reminded me of a flower garden so I used a pantograph of butterflies fluttering along for the quilting pattern using a white King Tut Superior thread:
I plan to machine sew the binding down tonight, pop the ...

A Charity Finish.... from Val's Quilting Studio

This fun quilt top was sent to me awhile ago as a donation to the Carolina Quilt Project.
I quilted it using a circular pantograph which I think complimented the geometric fabric patterns.
The binding was done in a solid black.
I have this little guy here for a week of Grammy Camp and plan to get the binding sewn down during our quiet afternoon movie time (no more naps when are five!). Then in the mail it goes.
Enjoying summer, grand guy fun and a little bit of sewing.

Summer Quilting.... from Val's Quilting Studio

Good thing about having an empty studio is having plenty of room to prep quilts....
We have an Open House to promote our house sale this weekend, and I plan to keep my long-arm up until our house does sell. With that said, I plan to use my summer sew time to quilt the two charity quilts I have committed to and the few finished tops I do have before I take down my long-arm for an upcoming extended period of time. I did finish quilting my Anne Downs yesterday and just need to bind it before I share it ...

Valentine Box from CollectInTexas Gal

Remember making Valentine Boxes for school out of a shoebox or Kleenex box?  I always loved going through my Mom's sewing stuff for pretty laces and buttons and cutting out construction paper hearts.  Those years of making Valentine Boxes came to mind when my grandson mentioned making a Valentine Box this year.
So, through my bags, boxes and drawers I went to gather everything to make a Valentine Box for a 3rd grader.  As you know, I do have lots of STUFF and lots of 'OverDoSue' trims, buttons, lace, fabrics etc. excited to get to use them ...

Best of 2018 Linky from Val's Quilting Studio

I like participating in Cheryl's "Best of" Linky Party as it creates the opportunity and motivation for me to look back and see how my year of blogging and quilting has been.
My "word" for 2018 was CREATE. reflection, well, THAT didn't really happen now did it. I find myself wondering, how can so much happen in a year, and yet, so much not. In review, I did finish seven quilts, but if I were to be honest, it was more a year of self growth than creative expression. It's not the details that matter ...

A Sunday Sew Day.... from Val's Quilting Studio

I awoke early with the realization that my Christmas shopping is near finished, the household chores are all caught up and I am actually feeling well after a week of being sick myself. I have all day to myself. As I wander outside, I am greeted with a cold, damp morning and realize the best place to retreat is my basement sewing studio for a final day of rest. Thus, with a hot cup of peppermint tea, holiday music playing softly and my loyal companion, Jackson, by my side, this is where I sit as I write to you today ...

Pajama Days, Legos, and Learning to Sew... from Val's Quilting Studio

Someone jumped in the truck with his Meme and Poppi to enjoy a few days of
"Grammy Camp" after our visit for brother's first birthday:

Unfortunately, he came down with a high fever and strep throat by Monday. After a visit to the doctor, we spent the rest of our visit cozy and quiet in our PJ's. His days were restfully spent watching cartoons with Jackson by his side, building Legos with his Poppi at night along with Chicken soup for dinner to warm his little tummy.

After a few days, he and his Poppi had a whole ...

Winter Stitching from Val's Quilting Studio

With Winter on our doorsteps and evenings starting earlier and earlier, I spent this morning inventorying my many hand stitching projects that are a WIP and those I'd like to finish by years end. For evening stitching, first up is to put the finishes stitches on my Anni Downs BOM:
This one has been so much fun to work on this past year. I'm admittedly beginning to look forward  to have it finished and hanging in our home.

Next up, is my Sunny Side of the Street wool applique:
I love the combination of cotton and wool. I ...

The Beginning of a New Quilt... from Val's Quilting Studio

Sometimes it all starts with a little doodling....
Our little grand-guy is going to be one next month which means, time for yet, another birthday quilt.
My daughter requested a "cow" theme to represent her successful year of nursing.
(I know, she's funny!) This is what I sketched and with a rainy weekend forecast ahead, I'm looking forward to spending a better part of my Sunday creating this fun quilt. I plan to incorporated many different textures along with an eye-spy body to boot! Won't that be fun!
Your suggestions are I won't be ...

A Super Hero Finish from Val's Quilting Studio

This is a pretty "busy" finish...but with two jelly rolls and a few 1/4 yards of superhero prints I was able to quickly put together this array of Super Hero fabrics for our grand-guys 5th birthday quilt! His two requests: "Meme it has to have Captain America and Spiderman annnnddddd be long enough to cover my feet! My feet fall out of last year's quilt now!"

It finished measuring 53"x 68" and should be big enough this upcoming winter
as he keeps his feet warm under it's soft, fleece backing of superheros.
(Notice our traditional ...

A Mental Health Day=A Great Hike! from Val's Quilting Studio

Once or twice a year, I treat myself to a Mental Health day off from work. So when my niece's volleyball team was in town for college play and my sister decided to drive across the state to gather a set of videos of her on the court, I knew exactly what to do.
Yep! The next day I took a mental health day. We loaded the pups into the car, took our "selfie"
and headed to Boise (only a 45 minute drive away) for a day hike.

Our hike began at the Old Idaho Penitentiary....

 ...and our destination ...

A Sew Day! from Val's Quilting Studio

Personal resolution #1 this new school year:
I will get out at least once a month for a sew day.
I have a tendency to become a hermit once the weekend comes around yet, I miss that inspiration that comes from sewing with other women. The chit chat chatter. The laughs. The sharing of projects and ideas. So this Labor Day finds me packed and ready to go. My friend reserved the library in a small town nearby for us all to meet up and sew in (as she has the same resolution). Stay tuned!
Hope your Labor Day is ...

Retired Quilts & A Little Blogging Break from Val's Quilting Studio

Happy Happy August everyone!
With two weeks of family fun and vacations behind me, I sat down and looked at my desk calendar this morning realizing that a time of transition is once again approaching as my summer vacation begins to wind down and a new school year begins to appear on the horizon.

This year I begin my 30th year of teaching and with it, a transition out of the classroom as a second grade teacher to that of a mentor coach. Which means, it's time to retire all my classroom quilts:

So what does that mean? What ...

Moving It Forward.... from Val's Quilting Studio

Aughhhhh.....hello Summer!
I'm sitting on our back patio, sipping my coffee, thinking of everyone else going to work.
I always find this first Monday of Summer to be rejuvenating.
I absorb the quiet. I adjust to not having a schedule to follow. (My husband calls this my "decompressing week") I'm grateful for the good school year had and the time off ahead.

I loose track of time and before I know it, it's 11:00pm and I almost have a quilt top made! This is the Eye-Spy quilt I'm making as a family gift for ...
