A classic sailboat pillow from Carried Away Quilting

Over the years I have collected a small library of quilt patterns and books. On evenings when I am too tired to sew but have quilting on my mind, I enjoy perusing them and pondering future projects. My husband approves of this pastime as well, because it means he gets to control the clicker and can watch golf, or fishing or some other sporting event on TV without me complaining.

Recently, we shared just such an evening of marital bliss . . . Brad watching “Wicked Tuna” and Taunja thumbing through her pattern collection . . . when I came across “Boat Day” by the Pattern ...

Lattice style quilt featuring Folktale from Carried Away Quilting

Even with the restrictions caused by the pandemic, our small family managed to have a lovely and festive Christmas celebration. Although we truly missed gathering together with extended family, we seemed to treasure our simple holiday even more because of it. Now that the gifts have been given, I have another quilt to share with you which I made for our son’s girlfriend, Emilee.

We weren’t able to celebrate with Emilee in person. As a young nurse at a large hospital, she was scheduled to work both Christmas Eve day and Christmas Day. But our son celebrated with ...

Free block pattern: Snazzy Snowflake from Carried Away Quilting

This past week we experienced unseasonably warm weather.  November high temps in the 70s are rare in Minnesota. The snow we received in October disappeared quickly, and we were able to get outside to finish our autumn yard chores and enjoy the sunshine.  But mother nature can’t fool me.  I know that bitter cold and mounds of white stuff are just around the corner. So, I embraced the inevitable and sewed up this pretty snowflake pillow.

I’m pleased to tell you that the snowflake block is a free pattern from Highway 10 Designs, a Canadian based design team ...

Next Up baby quilt featuring charming farm fabric from Carried Away Quilting

When I saw Stacy Iest Hsu’s newest fabric collection, On the Farm, I just had to sew up a baby quilt. The fabric is darling, with vibrant colors and charming farmyard scenes. In keeping with the country theme, I paired this collection with Moda’s Indigo Chambray and decided to use my Next Up charm pack pattern. The result is a cheerful baby quilt that is gender neutral and hay bales of fun.

Making children’s quilts is so rewarding. For me, they bring back special memories of my kids when they were little. This particular quilt reminds me ...

Barn Style quilt . . . just because from Carried Away Quilting

Sometimes I have to make a quilt just because my heart tells me so. I bet that’s true for a lot of you as well. It doesn’t matter if I’m too busy or have other sewing projects that should be a priority, that desire to sew up a particular pattern with treasured fabrics is too strong to ignore.  And that’s how it was for me recently, when I stitched up the Barn Style pattern by Lella Boutique using some of my favorite fabrics.

I love everything about this quilt. The bold, over-sized blocks create a simple ...

A sunny Flower Tile quilt block from Carried Away Quilting

Last night I was feeling blue. I was missing my quilting buddies and reminiscing about the fun we have when we sew together . . . giggling, talking, snacking, creating. For a moment, I considered throwing myself on the couch and binge watching Netflix. But instead, I picked up my chin and sought refuge in the sewing room. I’m so glad I did, because by the end of the evening I had cheered myself considerably by making this happy block!

Do you remember my Flower Tile pattern? I released it in 2018 and it has always been a personal favorite of mine ...

Bloomington bundle giveaway with LouLou's Fabric Shop from Carried Away Quilting

Last weekend I had a play date with myself in my sewing room. I pulled out my stash of Lella Boutique fabrics and admired some of my favorite prints. I rifled through my pattern basket for project ideas. I didn’t have a plan, but I felt compelled to create. For me that is the true joy of sewing. Turning myself over to the process, letting the outside world fall away, becoming happily focused on something basic and beautiful.

So today I'm sharing a little peek at what I was up to. Mostly I just cut some fabric and ...
