Beat The Heat from Sew Karen-ly Created...

Welcome to today's stop on Island Batik's "Beat the Heat" blog hop.  Although we can't actually help reduce the heat and humidity, we perhaps can offer some distraction by showing off the new Island Batik collections shipping to stores now.
We've had wicked heat and humidity this past month, so it was
nice to think back to January when the
first Island Batik Ambassador box arrived.

In that box were two parcels wrapped in paper marked "Surprise",
which we were to keep secret
until now.
Inside my parcels, was a collection called "Garden Party".  Designed by ...

THE BOX!! from Sew Karen-ly Created...

The much anticipated second Island Batik Ambassador has arrived, and the contents did NOT disappoint!  Twice a year, Island Batik and industry partners Aurifil, Hobbs Batting, and Accuquilt, shower their Ambassadors with a treasure box of goodies. It's like Christmas in a box, filled with 23 pounds of wonderful surprises.
First out, were 3 fabulous battings from Hobbs' Tuscany line: wool, silk, and polyester.  I am very familiar with the wool and silk battings as they are pretty much all I use, but this polyester is new to me and I look forward to trying it out.
Accuquilt, who ...

Graphic Gems: Colour & Inspiration Tuesday from Clever Chameleon

Graphic Gems color scheme at Clever Chameleon

I’ve got a new box full of gems! Bright fabric graphic gems!

Do you like these colours? I hope you like these colours, because I love these colours. These are the colours of one of Island Batik’s freshest fabric lines, Graphic Gems – a collection I will happily be working with in the coming months. What’s more, it’s just a taste of what I found in my most recent Island Batik Ambassador delivery.

All the Island Batik Ambassadors have been in a frenzy the last week or so, as new supplies have travelled the globe and landed ...

Always Choose Tropical: Colour & Inspiration Tuesday from Clever Chameleon

Always Choose Tropical colour scheme by Clever Chameleon

Always Choose Tropical

I am slowly working through a huge backlog of blog-relevant news and quilty happenings! I can’t believe July has been such a huge month, it certainly wasn’t forecast that way. Or maybe I just wasn’t paying attention! Anyway, we’re halfway in, and I still need to post two Love with a Twist patterns (aiming for one on Friday), an unboxing post for Island Batik (next week), and a number of other smaller things I’m messing around with.

But before all that, I really want to give you the lowdown on the Chameleon ...

Artsy Fartsy from If These Threads Could Talk

The fabrics in this post were given to me by Island Batik.

The mission: Use any fabric art/non-traditional quilting/sewing/thread painting technique using 3 Aurifil thread weights. In my infinite wisdom, I chose thread painting (sigh).

About 10 years ago I took a thread painting class from Nancy Prince. She is a wonderful quilt artist.

As usual I get organized with paper plates!

I started by creating my background of land and sky and pinning it to a light weight stabilizer. I traced mountains onto Steam A Seam II to add to the country scene.

I outlined the ...

Artsy Fartsy Self-Portrait: Colour & Inspiration Tuesday from Clever Chameleon

Clever Chameleon Threads color board at Clever Chameleon

Another 15 seconds of Fame for the Chameleon

Last Tuesday I was battling to find Artsy Fartsy inspiration for July. I was tired from neighbourly construction noise, end of term-itis, and from madly preparing quilts for showing. Tiredness is definitely not good for creativity. Thank you to all the lovely people who reached out with sentiments of empathy.

The good news is that the kids are now on hols, the quilt show was a resounding success and the demolishing is finished. I can cope with construction noise on just one side of our house! But before any of these resolutions ...

Colouring Inside The Lines from Sew Karen-ly Created...

This month's Ambassador Challenge for Island Batik is sponsored by one of our industry partners, Aurifil thread.
We were sent a selection of weights and colours in our Ambassador box back in January, and an additional packet of thread arrived later this spring.  It included these 3 spools of 40, 28, and 12 weight to be used in our challenge.
Our instructions said, "Fabric is your canvas and Aurifil thread your paint! Create a one of a kind art quilt or project with Aurifil thread."
This project took a great deal of thinking.  Normally, we design to showcase the ...

Island Batik Ambassador - Try it Challenge from Quilting Affection

The month of June's Challenge was called "Try it!"  I wasn't sure what project I was going to do until Spring Market. Deb Tucker Studio 180 Design announced the newest tool, "Wedge Star," and I was going to learn how to use it at the Certified Instruction annual training event in June.  Then I knew what I wanted to do right away for my challenge project.

So, I looked through my Island Batik collection of fabrics and found four different fabrics I needed to make for the Free pattern located on the back of the instructions of the ...

A Triple Crown from Sew Karen-ly Created...

June's challenge for the Island Batik Ambassadors is to try a technique that's totally new to us.  Island Batik, as well as industry sponsors Aurifil, Accuquilt, and Hobbs, supply us with amazing products to use in our projects.

For someone like me who's been quilting forever, it takes some deep thinking to come up with something I haven't yet tried.  Last year, I figured out how to do an interlocking herringbone, a technique I now like very much. Thinking cap firmly in place, I started jotting down ideas.
About this time, my friend Nellie dropped in ...

Make It Modern with Island Batik and Hobbs Batting from Quilted Delights

This month's challenge for Island Batik Ambassadors was to make a modern quilt and use any of the Hobbs batting that was sent to us.

I went with the Hobbs Heirloom Natural Batting with Scrim Binder.  I love how this batting sticks to the batik fabric, I never have to worry about it bunching and puckering on the back while quilting.

For this quilt, I really wanted to use the Snowberry Strip Set that was sent to me from Island Batik, but I had a hard time deciding on a pattern.  I couldn't decide if I wanted to ...

Island Batik Make It Modern with Hobbs from Goer

The products featured in this post were given to me by Island Batik, Hobbs, and Aurifil.

This month's Island Batik challenge is Make It Modern with Hobbs. Last month for the AccuQuilt challenge I used my cool color scraps with a neutral background. This month, I decided to use my warm colored scraps, and initially intended to use a tan neutral background. I toyed with the idea of using the same layout and the AccuQuilt again, but eventually decided that I would piece a scrappy slab. I didn’t have a final layout in mind and just started sewing ...

On the Plus Side {Finished Quilt} from Little Bunny Quilts

This has been a very busy month and I'm relieved that I was able to finish this quilt up over the long weekend!

But first, take a quick peek at the pictures I showed yesterday -- does anything look different in my final quilt?

Yes, I added a grey border all the way around the quilt. No, this wasn't a part of my original plan and I'm very glad that my spontaneous decision worked!

The main reason I didn't add a border when I was finishing the quilt top was that I wasn't sure that I ...

On The Plus Side {Quilt Top + Quilting} from Little Bunny Quilts

I had to do a *tiny* bit of finagling and planning to sew this top together because it isn't just a traditional grid, due to the tiny plus blocks surrounding the center five blocks. I first sewed the tiny plus blocks into sections, then sewed the sections of plus blocks to the larger strip blocks and rick rack blocks. From there I was able to sew things into rows, and then sew the rows together. I spent a significant amount of time thinking about how to press my blocks and attempting to have as many interlocking seams as possible ...

Island Batik Ambassador - Hobbs Modern Challenge from Quilting Affection

May's challenge for the Island Batik Ambassadors was to create a Modern Quilt that was used Hobbs Batting.

There are lots of different interpretations of a Modern Quilt.  The Modern Quilt Guild defines a Modern Quilt as the following, “We define modern quilts as quilts that are functional, include bold colors, and are inspired by modern design. Minimalism, asymmetry expansive negative space, and alternate grid work are often a part of modern quilt compositions, as are improvisational piecing and solid fabrics.”

Many of the Modern Quilts are pieced quilts,  I took my Modern a different direction, I did mine ...

An Island Batik Ambassador Quilt Finish

May is drawing to a close – it’s starting to feel more wintery here, and it’s time to show you my finished Island Batik Ambassador quilt for this month. My checkers quilt, Hop to be Square is my Island Batik project for May. I hope you saw last week’s post explaining how the flimsy of Hop to be Square came about…. It was nearly as much of a surprise to me as anyone – it was certainly not the quilt I sat down to make!

Croc colours

Eye’ve got a confession to make

I changed my mind (shock). Several times. (More shock….. you are shocked…… right?!). When I got out of bed on Sunday I was all set to use my sewing time to make a modern quilt for Island Batik and HOBBS. I was going to make a large colourful graphic improv block…. maybe a wonky log cabin or a star. And float it in a big black background ...

The Apple Of My Eye from Sew Karen-ly Created...

May's Island Batik Ambassador challenge is "Make It Modern".  Our industry sponsors are each singled out for one of our challenges, and this month it is Hobbs Batting.  (Last month was Accuquilt, and July is Aurifil!)  Our parameters include: "the use of...graphic areas of solid colour ...minimalism...and expansive negative space". Clearly, it also needs to include some Hobbs batting! :)
In flipping through some of my pictures for inspiration, I came across this photo taken a few years back, which I really like. It's a Royal Gala apple, with symmetrical stripes around the fruit, which showed nicely ...

Lemoynes Lost in Space from If These Threads Could Talk

Make It Modern

The products and fabrics shown in this post were given to me by Island Batik.

The Island Batik Ambassador’s challenge for May is to “Make It Modern”!  The Modern Quilt Guild defines ‘modern” as use of bold colors and prints, high contrast and graphic areas of solid color, improvisational piecing, minimalism, expansive negative space and alternative grid work.  I think I did pretty good.

I decided to make Lemoyne Stars.  Deb Tucker’s Rapid Fire Lemoyne Star tool was the very first Studio 180 Design tool I used and is one of my favorites!  This tool makes Lemoyne stars ...
