Magnificent Mini’s from If These Threads Could Talk

The products shown in this post were given to me by Island Batik.

Magnificent Minis

Our assignment for February was to create a “Magnificent Mini” using any technique we chose.  The only criteria was the size: 24″ x 24″ or smaller.  It seems I’m always collecting quilt blocks for hearts and Christmas Trees. The first thing I do is fire up my EQ8 and start drawing.

Last year I made a heart mug rug.  The drawing above consists of mirror image split rects and two squares that have had the corners popped using Studio 180 Design Split Rects & Corner Pop tools ...

House Warming Present {IB Amabassador Goodies 2019} from Little Bunny Quilts

As you may know, my husband and I recently bought a house and have spent the majority of January packing, moving, sorting, and unpacking. However, you might appreciate that the first package that arrived at the house wasn't anything for the house -- it was my first Island Batik Ambassador box for 2019!

Because we had so much to do, it sat in the living room for about 5 days before I had the time and space to open up the box!

Here are all of the fabric goodies I received:

From approximately left to right:
-half yard cuts of ...

X and O: My Magnificent Mini from Sew Karen-ly Created...

The first challenge for the Island Batik 2019 Ambassadors is to make a miniature quilt and post sometime during February.  The guidelines were pretty broad:

  • Must be 24” x 24” or smaller
  • Any fabrics except “surprise” fabrics
  • Any technique
February is always a red-and-white month for my sewing, so I cast my thoughts to something Valentine-heart-love related. I hit upon one of my previous designs, "X and O", and decided to remake it on a smaller scale. This is the original, which uses an 8" New York Beauty block in a diagonal setting.
The pattern is in my book, Quilting ...

Announcement, Announcement, Announcement... from Pamela Quilts

I wanted to get this post up earlier, but had some distractions going on here today.  So better late than never, I wanted to make the official announcement that I am one of the 2019 Island Batik Ambassadors!

I was so excited to hear the news earlier this month, and even more excited to see not one, but two shipping notices for packages headed my way!  I made an unboxing video, and I have to apologize for the really weird lighting.  It was a super rainy day so I had to use my dining room and the lighting was definitely ...

2018 Island Batik Ambassador  Review

I am (almost) speechless.  My first year as an Island Batik Ambassador has been, no kidding, life changing.  Island Batik gave each ambassadors two large boxes filled with fabrics and goodies from industry partners.

The combined generous supply of Island Batik fabrics and products from industry partners, Aurifil and Hobbs Batting, gave me the resources  to try new quilting challenges and make quilts, totes, pillow, postcards and more.

Let’s review the Island Batik Ambassador year in pictures. It includes monthly challenges, some just because projects and pattern releases.

Project Quilting 10.2 Red, White and Blue - Patriotic Windmills from Pamela Quilts

I totally surprised myself this week and got my project done early on!  When I saw the challenge for the week I knew right away that I would work on my bag full of patriotic fabrics.  I'm not too sure why all my patriotic fabrics are stored this way, I think it was a remnant from a prior project and I thought I would use them again, but I really haven't.

First of all I dumped out the whole bag and pulled out the pieces that had other colors in them.  I came upon a bunch of pieces ...

Get Away – Storm at Sea from Carol Lyles Shaw

Get Away is the Island Batik Blog Hop theme for January 2019. And, I decided it was the perfect opportunity to make Storm at Sea, a traditional block–but I ended up altering it in a modern way.

First…the Fabrics! My fabrics are from the Soul Song Collection by Island Batik.

This collection goes from brights to muted black/cream.

I decided to use these fabrics shown below in the project–you’ll see why in a moment.

I used these Island Batik Soul Song fabrics and added an Island Batik neutral called Whip Cream.
I love the words ...

Cat on a Wall quilt by Dione Gardner-Stephen of Clever Chameleon

Paisley Park meets Cat on a Wall

Welcome to my stop on the Island Batik Getaway Blog Hop. This is my last project as a 2018 Island Batik Ambassador, and accordingly, a biggie.

Back in July I received a “Surprise” package. Inside were glorious Paisley Park fabrics that had to be kept secret for the longest time! But today I can show and tell all. My instructions were to use as many of the different fabrics as I could to create a quilt of at least lap size. And if I wished, to incorporate themes of travel and destinations.

Paisley Park fabrics by Island Batik.

Quarter Cabins {Finished Quilt} from Little Bunny Quilts

With just a little time to spare, my November Island Batik Ambassador project is finished!

This quilt top ended up being a little over 50" square, so it was the perfect size to try out the Hobbs Wool batting that came in my summer IB Ambassador goody box!

Here's the jewel-toned beauty -- I had to fight some nasty wind to get these pictures today!

As an Island Batik Ambassador, I am provided with samples of various lines of Island Batik fabrics to use and share with you, as well as thread and batting samples!

This was my first time ...

The Wentworth Valley from Sew Karen-ly Created...

This month's Island Batik Ambassador challenge was to create a project using log cabin blocks. It took me awhile to decide what to make, as I love every log cabin quilt I've ever seen!  One design I've had in mind for a good many years is to interpret the patchwork of colours created in the fall when the frost hits our maple trees.
One of the most spectacular spots to see these colours in all their glory is in the Wentworth Valley, between Amherst and Truro, N.S. They even have a Festival of Colours there each ...

Island Batik Star Struck Quilt Tutorial from Carol Lyles Shaw

This month’s challenge for Island Batik is Star Struck and this is my quilt tutorial and free pattern for my modern version of a star.

I had a difficult time getting the color match on the full quilt photos! This looks a bit yellow–background fabric is actually white. See the close up of the star point below for the true colors.

The Island Batik Ambassador challenge this month was to create a Star Quilt.  I decided to take a modern approach and create an oversized wonky star using a limited color palette.  The modern design principles I played ...
