Too Quiet? from From the Strawberry Patch...

Have you missed me? I know that I entitled my last post "Keeping It Quiet", but you might have noticed that I have been very quiet over the last few weeks-- too quiet! The truth is that we have been gone, cruising the Pacific and enjoying the sunshine of the Hawaiian islands. Our flight back to the east coast was anything but quiet; flying from Los Angeles to Atlanta on Saturday was one rowdy

Hi, all!

It's here - the very last Friday of the year!  And I couldn't let it pass without a chance for all of us to whoop it up.  I know you've got things you can share now that Christmas has passed, so here's your chance!

I, on the other hand, have not been sewing this week - because I am in Maui, Hawaii!!  So I have something a little different to whoop it up about.   Let's get started!

We decided back in February to take a trip to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary, and because we ...

Hawaiian Getaway: "Aura" Fabric Collection from Art Gallery Fabrics-The Creative Blog

  Hawaii

If you haven't gone yet, you MUST go to Hawaii at least once in your lifetime! There's so much beautiful scenery to take in there! The sunsets, the gorgeous Pacific Ocean, the amazing food like fresh pineapple..it's truly a gorgeous and magical place. My favorite part of visiting Hawaii was going horse back riding where "Jurassic Park" was filmed, I felt like at any moment a dinosaur was going to pop out of the huge trees there. It was completely surreal and breathtaking.

$5 Friday: Hibiscus E2E from Wasatch Quilting

$5 Friday

As I’ve been preparing for a graduation next week, I’ve noticed a growing trend in the United States is the giving of Leis to High School and College Graduates to wear with their cap and gowns to graduation ceremonies.  In Hawaiian culture , leis are presented as people are coming or leaving, and are a symbol of affection. There are many beautiful flowers that can be put in a Lei, one of the most gorgeous being the Hibiscus! Therefore, our theme this week is centered around the Hawaiian culture, and the Hibiscus. This E2E has never before been in ...

The Shirt Off His Back, Into His Quilt from Gefilte Quilt

Is there someone in your life who doesn't want you to buy him or her anything new? I so admire anti-materialists, including both men in my immediate family. DH doesn't want me to buy him anything fresh that isn't meat, while for DS, vegan artisanal chocolate is usually the best (and only) bet.
Sometimes I cave to their principles, and sometimes I outwit them by making them quilts, since both are way too polite to return them. Here's the small Valentine quilt I made my husband this year.
I'm thinking of calling it "Nothing New ...

Hawaii from Polka Dots and Butterflies

I love Hawaii and can't wait to get back.  This is a pattern by Pat Sloan.  It really highlights the fabric and doesn't require you to cut the fabric into small pieces.  It reminds me of my visits to my favorite island.  The back of the quilt has batiks which further the Hawaiian theme.

Round Up from Polka Dots and Butterflies

Time to post a round up of all the things I have been working on and some past projects.  First up a braided table runner. I love the pastel colors on this and the braided quilt style goes together so quickly.  This will be on my table during the spring months.

Next up is Farm Girl Vintage from Lori Holt of Bee in my Bonnet.  I had never done sampler quilting and wanted to make one of each block in her book.  I could get lost in all the different blocks, colors, and shapes. I love this one to pieces ...

Aloha from Germany! from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

Since arriving in Germany this past June, I (Kara) have jumped into a number of quilt guilds and groups. One group that I have joined is called the Baltimore Beauties. Many of the ladies there were once a part of a group that made a Baltimore Album quilt based on Mimi Dietrich's patterns; thus the name. The group has stuck together and now meets monthly to quilt, knit, or just to help develop their skills in English or German. Most of the ladies are German, but the love of quilting overcomes any language barriers. Their English is hands-down, way ...

Please click on the title to read the full post.

Hi Everyone!

Welcome to the new readers!

Just a quick note to wish everyone a Happy Holiday! I did a little painting and more quilting on the Hawaiian piece. It’s almost done.

And the other day, this tree closer to home caught my eye!

I used my heavy hand dyed cotton ArtFabrik thread to create the tall grasses. And of course, my signature is hiding in there somewhere…

Be well and eat a lot of whatever is yummy!

Don’t be shy! Come and join my:

What is Thread Sketching? from Roxane Lessa Fine Textile Art

Please click on the title to read the full post.

Hi Everyone!

Welcome to the new readers!

What is thread sketching? I think it is intense free motion quilting for a desired effect. Thread painting on the other hand completely covers the underlying fabric. I generally don’t like to do that, since my fabrics are part of the design.

While I was in Kauai, I feel in love with these trees, and knew I had to make a piece about them. And what better background than the brilliant blue Pacific ocean?

When I got home and studied the picture ...

It’s Fall Y’all! from Roxane Lessa Fine Textile Art

Please click on the title to read the full post.

Hi Everyone!

Welcome to the new readers!

Yes, here in NC, we get a lovely delayed Fall, Y’all. The lake near my home is so tranquil.

The kitties are snuggled up for a cozy nap:

And I got inspired by a huge moon the other night and some red, red trees! So I quickly worked up a quilt top to remember it by. Here I strip pieced some hand dyed grays and lavenders for the background,  because I didn’t have a piece that was big enough.

Next I ...

Please click on the title to read the full post.

Hi Everyone!

Welcome to the new readers!

Last week, I got to go to San Fransisco- one of my all time favorite cities. This was my third time here, but I haven’t been since 1997!

Here’s the back story: my very best childhood friend lives there, downtown in a gorgeous house with a gorgeous view, with her fabulous boyfriend, Bill. I know- I want her life.  Anyway, said boyfriend asked me if I could come as a surprise visit to my friend as an anniversary present to her ...

Fresh Work! from Roxane Lessa Fine Textile Art

Please click on the title to read the full post.

Hi Everyone!

Welcome to the new readers!

The good thing about finishing UFO’s is that it makes more mental space for starting new, fresh work. So that is what I am doing now, creating a new small piece from one of my photos of Kauai.  Here is the original photo:

I think this tree will be fun to do with thread work. The first step was to blow up a tracing of the photo, which I did on www.blockposters.com. I printed out the 4 sheets and taped ...

Hurricane Aid For a Family in Puerto Rico from Roxane Lessa Fine Textile Art

Please click on the title to read the full post.

Hi Everyone!

Welcome to the new readers!

Okay , a quick update on the fundraiser for hurricane aid. After thinking it over, I decided against the auction, and decided instead to make a typical online fundraiser.  And all proceeds will go to a family of a good friend.  The quilt will be donated to a randomly chosen winner who has donated. Donations start at $10, which just about everyone can afford.

Here’s the  link to donate:

Hurricane Aid from Roxane Lessa Fine Textile Art

Please click on the title to read the full post.

Hi Everyone!

Welcome to the new readers!

At this writing, I can’t help but be moved by the dire situation in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Yes, Houston and Florida are still recovering, but at least they have the advantage of being on the mainland.

This got me thinking about what I could do to raise some money to donate.  That is why I am auctioning off my latest piece, Hawaiian Reverie with 50 % of the proceeds to go to hurricane aid for Puerto Rico.  I will ...

How am I Quilting Hawaiian Reverie? from Roxane Lessa Fine Textile Art

Please click on the title to read the full post.

Hi Everyone!

Welcome to the new readers!

It’s onwards and upwards with the quilting on my new Hawaiian piece. After heat setting the painted areas with a dry iron, I am ready to stitch!

Last week I added some dark areas of horizontal stitching to depict the shadows, pretty much right over the darker painted areas. A lot of people want to know if this is thread painting or thread sketching or just plain ‘ol free motion quilting. The short answer is, I don’t care and I don ...

Painting Video of Hawaiian Reverie from Roxane Lessa Fine Textile Art

Please click on the title to read the full post.

Hi Everyone!

First of all I want to congratulate Cathy on completing her beautiful quilt: the wedding present for her son.  Just look at that precise stitching!

And now on to the painting of Hawaiian Reverie. I guess that is the working title for now.

First here is the before picture. The area I will be painting is the mountains on the left.

I made a short video to demo the process.

The hard part is waiting for the paint to dry so I can keep going on this piece ...
