Tulip Time... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

It's Tulip Time

here in Western Oregon

A punch of color waiting for us

just outside the front door...

Even the rain drops look beautiful

on the tulip petals...

The rain drops resemble little glass beads...

It has been a very long and wet winter...

but now it is Tulip Time !

We have 5 weeks left in our calving season...

The flowering cherry trees are in full bloom

and the tree swallows have returned and are

nesting in the big, white bird house...

The days are getting longer with about

three more hours of daylight...

Winter is behind us ...

Second Best Thrift Find, Easter Feast, Spring's First Flower from Canadian Needle Nana

I get sad sometimes when I see how many folks have stopped blogging; several I had quite a nice email friendship with so I miss them. I guess Instagram is gradually getting more popular, but to me, it doesn't offer quite the same level of communication or connection. I'm going to carry on blogging for as long as I enjoy it. You, my blogging friends, have become an important part of my life!  And it is good for my brain too keeping up with all the little bits and pieces of writing a blog...the linking up, searching ...

Yet Another Retreat... from The Cozy Quilter

It's true.  My friend, Christine and I have attended two quilting retreats in March, two weeks apart.  (We won't mention that we were away for a week at the end of February at QuiltCon in Raleigh, NC...).  This is the end of our quilting retreats for until November, when we have two more. We are both very productive on the retreats and manage to get lots of sewing done.  It's amazing what you can accomplish over the course of 2 1/2 or 3 days of concentrated time with no cooking, dishes and other distractions!  I spent ...

Spring has Sprung! from The Cozy Quilter

Warm, sunny weather was with us most of this past week.  (We won't discuss the snow that we had last weekend!)  I have put away all of our winter decorations and have pulled out the Spring things!  I want to sew with Spring colours too.  My MIL likes to have her room decorated for the season so I am working on a Spring wall hanging for her.  The rabbit and flowers are attached to the background with fusible appliqué and I used a narrow zigzag stitch around the shapes to hold everything down.  I plan on getting this quilted ...

Quilting Retreat Report from The Cozy Quilter

Last weekend, I sewed for three days straight at the semi-annual Oxford Quilter's Guild retreat.  Early in the pandemic, I cut up many of my scraps into 2.5" squares and put them into piles by colour into a plastic shoebox.  I challenged myself to make quilts using these squares to use them up.  I have made several quilts with these squares but still had lots left.  I brought them and some gray and white print yardage with me to the retreat.  I had designed this quilt in my head and put all the nine patches together at the ...

Calving 2024... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

Three calves on the ground so far.

I was too busy to get a photo to share...

If you look real close, you can see the Cowboy

walking through the herd checking on the

mama cows to see if any of them are close

to calving...

This is Calf number 1 with Mary Jane.

They are both doing really well.

The Camellia bush doesn't look like

this anymore...

It is frozen...

We have had snow on and off

and the temp is dipping down into the 20's...

This is my view from inside the Thread Shed...

I can ...

Flowers and Fabric, oh my! from Art In Search

Two things I just love, fabric and flowers, have made an appearance around here lately. Two friends sent me fabric to help with making comfort quilts. Julie sent me some large pieces to help with backing and a whole load of 2 1/2" strips- some colors and a lot of low volume (yum) ones. I am trying to determine what quilts to make with them, paging through my collection of printed out ideas. Of course, then I had to rearrange two massive folders of printed out/purchased patterns. I arranged the strips by color and style for the photo ...

February Flowers, Quilting Books, More Crossroads Blocks from Canadian Needle Nana

You must be tired of me talking about how much I admire Geraniums. Here, deep in winter, is mine giving out pretty blooms.

Of course, I try my best to be good to them. I read that Geraniums and most plants enjoy Banana water...just the skins soaked for a day or two in water. I had to try that and now all my plants are getting a drink or two of the egg shell / banana water. I also spritz the leaves regularly and I never overwater.
After enjoying these books from the library, I wound up buying a copy ...

Stitching Stuff: Week 5 of 2024 from Life In Pieces

Week 5 of 2024 means it's February.  Day one and two were very nice, but now we are back to a chilly rain.  That usually means more stitching time for me, but with the nice weather, walks and photography took over a couple of afternoons. Saturday morning was science fair, so my stitching time took a hit, but I still got in at least my 15 minutes each day.

  • 15 minute days/week = 7/7 days
  • 15 minute days/Jan = 31/31 days
  • 15 minute days/Feb = 3/3 days
  • 15 minute days/2024 = 34/34 days
  • Success rate ...

Making the Flowers from From My Carolina Home

When we left off this project, I had the vase, the stems and leaves, and the newspaper done. Next was to sew the flowers for the amaryllis. Because I have shifted to a dimensional plan, I put some red mottled fabric right sides together and drew petal shapes. Roughly cutting them out, I sewed the edges together along the drawn lines.

I trimmed the seam allowance to a minimum.

Then, the curves and points were clipped, and the petal was turned right side out.

Folding the raw edges under, the edge is pinned with a nice point.

I made five ...

Quilt Projects Update, Sites to Explore, A Show Too from Canadian Needle Nana

The autumn pinkish purple Smoke tree was ablaze in the early morning sun which did not stay long.
A little touch of fungus is making interesting patterns on a few of its leaves.

We are watching a version of D. H. Lawrence's work including Women in Love on Brit Box. It is two very lengthy episodes with a wonderful cast. A little note...there is nudity.

I'm finished the 10 straight quilt lines on Christmas Coins. I'm happy to be hand quilting more interesting lines now... this design. It's just hand drawn curlicues that I think ...

Bramble Blooms QAL, Books, Binding Sewing from Canadian Needle Nana

I've been on a biography binge lately. I read both these books below many many years ago but enjoyed rereading them. I admire both women's work very much and it is always interesting to see what folks will share in a biography/journal style book. Both write with a similar frankness about their lives and there the similarity ends. Nuala O'Faolain once famously described herself as being "a nobody from a long line of nobodys" and May Sarton- ahh, what to say about May. I carried a line of hers in my head from when time was ...

Last blooms standing from Art In Search

Well, Oct. 31st, I saw snow. On Halloween. Fortunately, I took photos before of the remnants of my garden because it still had lovely flowers. I can't take apart the garden or boxes if there are still blooms on the plants, so I will be prying them out once the weather turns ugly probably. We just have too many months without flowers, so I hang on to them for all its worth.

Palm Readings, Plus Quilt, Blooming Trees from Canadian Needle Nana

Yesterday was a middling day with no appointments and drizzling outside making it gloomy inside. My mind was all over the place and I felt like I accomplished only odd bits and pieces here and there all day. Like I played with things rather than getting down to working. Sometimes a blank day is a good thing to have and other times it becomes meandering, missing some drive, so that I get little done. But all that matters less as a retiree as no one is depending on my "work".

However I did have a little sort of work recently ...

Crochet, QAL's, Wool Shopping, Billions from Canadian Needle Nana

Autumn Marigolds with a little dew, very early morning. Flirting with frost warnings this week.

Through the camera lens, this one looked like it was made of porcelain.
Something I saw I wanted...with heating with wood during our winters, there are cold nooks and crannies about the house. I think I need one of these...I was given a short one last winter which I loved so a full length might be even better. I think I'm going to put it on my Christmas gift list for the girls too. Definitely not chic! At Amazon (not affiliated).

Cheesecake, EPP Hexie Love, Gold in the Garden from Canadian Needle Nana

Cooler temperatures, 5C on my walk this morning but warming to 15 the weather forecast has promised, and just like that I'm thinking of heartier fare. But first I need to catch up on the cakes...recently Beth made the birthday folk here a beautiful New York style Cheesecake with Strawberry Compote.  The cake had 5 ! packages of cream cheese in it and was the most sumptuous cake I've ever eaten. It was silky and so delicious. And Tony finished off the compote over a little ice cream.

I loved the colours here below...the wild Goldenrod which ...

Free Patterns, Plus Quilt, Coleus Beginnings from Canadian Needle Nana

I mentioned a few years ago I wanted to grow Coleus and finally set a packet of seeds this spring. When I put out the tiny plants, some critter ate most of them and these few here below somehow survived. I'm happy to have these and hope they will fare well now when brought into the house later on.

All the Marigolds were also grown from seeds and I chose the autumn colours at the time. I wish I'd put them all in one big pot instead of spreading them throughout different pots as they would make such ...
