Brown Bag Mystery Quilt from Becca's Crazy Projects

Last year I participated in a fun mystery quilt designed by Karen Montgomery. I decided to jump in and try another this year.
I chose my brown bag based on the floral print. I'm not entirely sure how I feel ab out the amount of pink fabric but I'm going to go with the flow. I bought this kit from The Crabby Quilter in Annapolis.
The kit comes with cutting instructions to get you started. I did the initial cutter and stacked everything in an project box so I will be ready each week.
The first clue came ...

Wallflowers from The Snarky Quilter

wall·flow·er ˈwȯl-ˌflau̇(-ə)r

1a: any of several Old World perennial herbs (genus Cheiranthus) of the mustard family

especially: a hardy erect herb (C. cheiri) widely cultivated for its showy fragrant flowers

b: any of a related genus (Erysimum) of herbs with showy flowers

2a: a person who from shyness or unpopularity remains on the sidelines of a social activity (such as a dance)

Am I the only one who sees a contradiction in the above definitions? Showy yet on the sidelines? But that contradiction applies ...

The Bloomin’ Quilting Is Done from The Snarky Quilter

Bloomin’ is defined as “just a casual swear word” by The Urban Dictionary, and I used a few while quilting Rhody. As I recounted in an earlier post, I have been developing an impressionistic floral piece made with fabrics I had dyed, painted, and printed.

My original plan called for an undulating circular walking foot quilting design in several thread colors. Then, I decided to create the illusion of leaves around the edges. I had already reached the limits of walking foot quilting on the circular part, so I knew FMQ was the only way I could do leaves.

It ...

FLOURISH QAL: Fabrics from Nestlings By Robin

The first exciting step in starting a new
project....FABRICS!!
YAY! YIPPEE! YAHOO!

I had a lovely floral print,
"First Impressions" designed by
Mary Anne Henderson
from Red Hen Fabrics
for Northcott
that started it for me.
The color is true in the pic above.
I used the colors in the print
to pull my applique' and other
piecing fabrics.

I placed a ruler over the
fabric so you can get
an idea of the print scale.
This print worked perfectly
with the size of the templates.
You want a small to medium
print so that the fun details show ...

Joy Quilt Block and Pattern from Curlicue Creations

This is the Joy quilt block.  It pairs with the Faith quilt block that I showed last week.
This is an update for a block pattern in my Etsy shop.  Here's how I made it:

I used a fusible applique method for this block,  Here's some of the leaf pieces laid out on the back of the green fabric.

These are the flower centers fused to the back of the yellow orange fabric.

Cutting out the fused patches.

Arranging leaves on the background square.

Arranging stems and flowers on the background square.

Adding more leaves.  At this point ...

Faith Quilt Block and Pattern from Curlicue Creations

This is the Faith Quilt Block.  This pattern has been in my Etsy shop for a while.  I recently decided to make another block with it.

This pattern is written for fusible applique, but could easily be adapted to other styles of applique.  What's your favorite?

Sometimes I enjoy making bias stems, but in this case, as the stem is one big circle, I used fusible applique for it, too.

The circle stem and the four flowers fused to the background.

Arranging the leaves.

Fusing the leaves in place.

Centering and fusing the ladybug in place.

After everything is ...

A Hopeful New Year! from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

Happy New Year, everyone! Our New Year's Day here in Germany was pretty quiet, due to our current lockdown. So far the lockdown has given me (Kara) extra time to stitch—especially for our latest Stitch-Along, which will kick off in just a couple of weeks.

Last year, we created our Hopeful Bluebird wall hanging as something to do during the first quarantine. Our Facebook group started out small but has grown quite a bit since then, so now it is time to introduce another little project. Whether you are in lockdown or not, this project is made up ...

All the Stockings Were Hung... from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

Both Teri and I (Kara) have been working on all things stocking lately. Our Cardinals Christmas Stocking was released earlier in the week, and now we would like to introduce our Floral Christmas Stocking!

This flannel and wool stocking is simple in its color scheme but is full of little details that give it a unique charm. All the simple embroidery is done with Weeks DyeWorks crewel wool, giving the stocking a lot of texture. We have a limited number of kits available that include the flannel, wool, ribbon hanger, and a whole skein of the Weeks crewel wool. All ...

You’ll love this pretty wall hanging by our second MWM designer, Deirdre Bond-Abel! Entitled “Betty’s Blooms”, the look is shown here in 1930s prints, yet would translate equally well in your favorite Marcus collections, including prints and basic texture lines for a more contemporary look! It’s a fun mix of piecing and applique that will add charm to any room setting.

To get the FREE PATTERN, just email deirdre@hatcreekquilts.com.au. Then, check out (and be sure to bookmark!) her companion video of applique tips and techniques!
