Jazzing up January from The Academic Quilter

Hi everyone! How are things going for you? We are experiencing the grays of January. You know what I mean-- sometimes it rains, sometimes it's just cloudy, sometimes it snows, but mostly it's just gray. We did have actual rain and a few spits of snow this week, but nothing stuck to the ground. That's totally okay with me! Sometimes I miss it, but I do not miss shoveling.

What with all the January-ness around, and having spent a bunch of time with a non-favorite color, I decided to pull out something bright and happy this week ...

Earth Tones: finished from Fabric Engineer

I realized that I needed a semi-quick baby quilt recently.  I know I can always be late with baby quilts, but try to be on time.  For some reason, earth tones kept coming to my mind.  I know they're not all that normal for a baby, but I don't think the baby will really care.  I usually choose colors that I like.

I found a pattern that looked fun and, bonus, it was super easy.  I saw the quilt first at Quilting By Dawn, although I'm not sure of any further information about the original.  As with ...

Ikat from Liz Makes Crafts

Ikat is a pattern by Brigitte Heitland featuring fabric from her Fragile collection, one of my favorite fabric collections ever. I've made so many quilts with it, including Fragile, Paradox, and Critical Sunshine, and that's just the ones I've finished quilting! What can I say, I'm a sucker for black and gold.

Ikat was one of those quilts that I really wanted to have, but not necessarily to make. Piecing this quilt was a royal pain, due to the jelly rolls. But once I was done with it, I really loved the quilt top, and I ...

Meshing Triangles 2: finished from Fabric Engineer

After Meshing Triangles got into the AQS quilt show in Grand Rapids, I posted the news, along with a picture, on Facebook.  It lead to an old friend reaching out and wondering if I could make a similar one for her prayer space.  This was a fun quilt to make, and I love making quilts for people, so I immediately said yes!

I love how this one came out too.  Trying to figure out how to blend the triangles while making use of what I have on hand and not going crazy is always a fun problem.  For the quilting ...

Feathered Star from Liz Makes Crafts

I've tried to keep up a good ratio lately, trying to quilt 2 quilts for every quilt top I finish. (So far, maybe I'm succeeding at a 1.3 : 1 ratio, but baby steps). The quilt I chose to quilt next is Feathered Star, a pattern by Rebecca Bryan using a fabric line called Geogram by Samarra Khaja.

I vaguely remembered posting about completing the quilt top for Feathered Star so I went searching for it ... and dates don't lie, this quilt top is just over 4 years old! Even though a long time has passed, I ...

Periodicity from Liz Makes Crafts

Periodicity is a quilt designed by Cheryl Brickey of Meadow Mist Design. The pattern is so graphic and the Kona solids so vibrant, the minute I saw it, I knew I had to make it!

I was quite excited to quilt this because blue background means I can use blue thread. I use a light yellow thread about 90% of the time, so it's very exciting to use another color. Another reason I pulled this quilt out is that I was just dying to use one of my favorite designs that I hadn't done in a long time ...

Finished: library quilt from Fabric Engineer

 The library quilt is finished!

I know what you're saying; that doesn't look like it has anything to do with a library!  It's true.  One of the librarians at our local library just had a baby, and I gave it to her.  I was almost on track to finish by the time she was born, but then she came a little early and so I let myself have a little extra time to finish.

The pattern is derived from photos at TheQuiltYarn, although the colors are quite a bit different!  I had gotten the center flowers and ...

Arabella has a garden from The Academic Quilter

Hello everyone! I hope you have been having a really good week. I'm still very down, but trying to work my way out of it. Our friend Preeti has released a new pattern, and she asked me to test it for her. I was going to say no, but some things happened, and I ended up saying yes. There is a story, but first, here is my version of Preeti's Arabella's Garden pattern:

Well, that's different, isn't it? But wait, there's more! Take a look:

Yes, I ended up making two. Preeti does not ...

A comfort quilt from The Academic Quilter

Hi all! Long time no see. Yes, the family crisis continues. It weighs heavily on my heart, but a friend reminded me that art can be therapeutic. I've really had no interest in anything fun, but I took her advice and found a project to work on, and darned if I didn't feel better afterward. Let's take a look, shall we?

After searching through and rejecting every project I had in progress (isn't it odd how that works?) I settled on quilting the easy donation quilt that I made for this year's Hands2Help. I did ...

Insignia from Liz Makes Crafts

I keep a spreadsheet of all my quilting projects so I can keep track of where they are, when I finished them, etc, but Insignia predated all that, and I have no idea how old this quilt top is! I barely remembered what it looked like, so when I pulled it out of the pile to finish it, it looked ... well, like all the colors of the rainbow dumped into a quilt. It is bright.

The pattern is Alternative by Alison Glass, and the fabric I used is a combination of Insignia (hence the name of the quilt) and some ...

Accidentally modern from The Academic Quilter

Hi all! Well, the summer travel is over for us. Sadness! We did have some great trips, and we have now seen both ends of US1, but the good times are over for now and it's back to the grind. I will say that nothing makes you appreciate your own home quite like traveling. Especially your own bed. Good-smelling sheets!

If you've been around the blog for a bit, you know that "modern" is not really my thing. All that empty space! Most modern quilts look unfinished to me, though I do admire many of them. What can ...

Crescent from Liz Makes Crafts

About 2 years ago, I participated in Christa Watson's Block Chain Quilt Along and made an adorable top using a charm pack of Crescent by Sarah Watts. After taking a long break from quilting this year, I decided it's finally time to finish this quilt.

I really love this quilt because the Crescent fabric is so cute with its owls, yet it's not juvenile at all. The chain link look is very graphic and this pattern is just perfect to show off a charm pack!

Using alternate designs is one of my favorite things to do, because ...

Green Quarter Log cabin - finished from Fabric Engineer

I've been attending a Mom's group at church and this baby snuck up on me quickly.  I knew for most of the year that she was pregnant and yet suddenly the baby was here!

Anyway, I was Queen Bee in January for Stash Bee, so I decided to use those blocks for the quilt.  I started laying them out and realized quickly that it was way to big for a baby quilt.  So I've only used a bit over half of them, which means I can use the other half for another baby quilt!

For the bee ...

Circuit from Liz Makes Crafts

After the holidays last year, I was feeling lethargic and decided to take a break. However, I didn't expect the break to last half a year! To be honest, with everything that's going on in my life and beyond, quilting just isn't at the top of my list at the moment.

But I did recently finish a quilt, a quilt I've been longarming on and off for 5 months. I finished the quilt top for Circuit several years ago, and it's been one of my favorite quilt tops in my stash. The pattern is by ...

Bright & Black from Fabric Engineer

I had two goals: make a baby boy quilt and only use fabric that I already had.  While I can't always find what I want in my fabric stash, it is also starting to become a little too much for me.

I really, really like how this quilt turned out.  I love the assortment of colors, while still following a color theme.  I love how the (Kona) black background helps them pop.  I think I need to seriously consider using black more often.  My black cat was a pain during the photo shoot, so I finally included him in ...

Dinosaurs on parade from The Academic Quilter

Hi everyone! How was your week? We are on spring break this week, and I had plans to get a lot done. Spoiler alert-- I did not get a lot of things done. I did do some grading, and I cleaned a bunch of things, but that doesn't really feel like progress, you know?

Here's one thing I did get done-- I finished up and bound my little quilt for the Stay at Home Round Robin, run by Quilting Gail and other quilty friends. Amazingly, I kept up this year and even finished on time! Here are the ...

First flowers of spring from The Academic Quilter

Hi everyone, and welcome to the weekend spring begins-- hurray! It's been a long winter, and I am glad to see the end of it. At least I hope we've seen the end. Winter never seems to want to leave, and could still surpise us once or twice. But check out what is blooming on our hillside:

Yes, it's first daffodil of spring, and I am very, very happy to see it! And here's something else I'm happy to see-- a finished quilt:

There's a chance that this quilt has been done for a ...

Falling stars in spring from The Academic Quilter

Hi everyone! Somehow, it's now March. You know what that means, right? Spring officially begins in 16 days, on the 20th! Yahoo! Bring on the flowers and the warm weather. I am so ready, and I'll bet you are, too. I'll start looking for flower shoots on my next walk. I will be incredibly happy to find some, that's for sure.

Today's quilt has a backstory, of course. I made this in 2018 from a jelly roll using THIS block from the Squared Away project. I finished the top in the fall of 2018 and ...

Harry Potter nine patch from Fabric Engineer

I love how this quilt turned out!  (I think that about a lot of the quilts.  But nevertheless, this one is no exception.)

The pattern is Urban Nine Patch on Point by Jenny Pedigo of Sew Kind of Wonderful.  The colors correspond to the different house colors in Harry Potter.  (There are several different links with slightly different colors, but I used this one.)  I didn't want the quilt to scream Harry Potter though, so I put the colors in the blocks and mixed up the houses.

I used the following Kona colors:

background: steel
inner background: dove
Gryffindor ...

Fading away - finished from Fabric Engineer

This quilt has been finished for quite some time, but for some reason I never got around to officially blogging about it.  Today is the day to remedy that!

I really like this quilt and how it fades into blackness.  While I was pregnant and feeling terrible (seven years ago) all I did was make large strips of scrap fabric.  Most of them were used for a different scrap quilt, but I had enough to make this one too.

I added invisible blocks for the blocks/strips that are missing in the quilting areas, and some wavy lines in the ...
