Every Kid (or Former Kid) will love Row 8 of “In My Neighborhood” from Quilter Chic

I was never an athlete in my youth. I hated kickball. I was always afraid the ball would hit me in the face. I did get hit in the face playing softball once. But on the playground, I loved 4-square! Something about it was just so much more simple, for my simple mind.

That’s why I was so excited to see Melissa LaGreca’s fabulous row, Playground for the In My Neighborhood quilt along. It features a hopscotch, which I also enjoyed, and two 4-squares. It reminds me of my childhood.

Fiber Tuesday 123 from The Quilting Room with Mel

Welcome back to Fiber Tuesday!  How was everyone's week?  This weekend was an odd one around here.  Paul did more sewing than I did.  It's one of those, only so much time in a day things.  In order to design I can't sew so he did my sewing while I spent time sketching out new projects.  Having him sew is better than teaching him how to use all of my programs.  Plus if he can understand what I want then I know the project directions are clear and easy to understand.

How To Quickly Cut Fabric Strips from The Quilting Room with Mel

A frequently asked question here in the quilting room is how to cut lots of fabric strips.  Quilters are either looking to skip buying pre-cut fabrics or they need a different a different size of strips.  There are lots of options on the market today for quickly cutting fabric strips.  This is just one one of the methods.  Paul bought me this a few years ago for Christmas because I saw Eleanor Burns using it on an older Quilt in A Day on YouTube.

How To Clean a Godzilla or Crinkle Finish Vintage Sewing Machines from The Quilting Room with Mel

Hello everyone today we are going to be addressing how to clean the gunk and old oil residue from our wrinkle finished vintage sewing machines. We have acquired several different machines from different manufacturer’s that have this super tough finish covering the outside surface of the machines. Although the wrinkle finish does a great job of protecting the machine from surface damage the trade-off to it is it does like to attract and disperse oil across the surface making it a great microscopic dirt and grime catcher. I am going to explain how I clean this surface when we ...

Fall 2017 Quilting Trends from The Quilting Room with Mel

I will be the first to admit I don't look for trends in quilting.  It's not that I don't want to stay on top of things, I do.  I look outside the quilt world for my trends.  I've always turned to home decor trends to help me figure out what is going to look great in quilts and quilted accessories.  Today, I'm going to cover not only what is coming out this fall for the quilt world but also what's going on in the home decor world that we can put into our projects ...

How To Time A Vintage Sewing Machine At Home from The Quilting Room with Mel

Hello everyone, today we are going to delve into the magic that makes a sewing machine form stitches. Regardless of the age of the sewing machine, vintage or modern if it uses a rotating hook the principle is the same so the process will also be the same. The proper description of the topic of the day is sewing machine hook and needle timing. Our goal is to show how we decide if we have a timing issue and what course of action we need to take to correct the problem.

19 Free Bird Projects to Sew! from Jacquelynne Steves

I Love Birds! I think because they represent freedom- they just fly where ever their little hearts desire! They also sing- I love listening to their songs! I have several bird song CD’s which I enjoy listening to. Now, here’s something that may be odd- I love outdoor birds, but birds indoors in cages kind of freak me out a little! I have no idea why :)

Here are some birds which you can keep and give as gifts all year round- they don’t sing, but they sure are cute!!

(Please note- as of the writing of this ...
