Another Lakeside Star quilt! from Carried Away Quilting

My second Lakeside Star quilt is finished and ready to be gifted to a lovely bride and groom-to-be, our beautiful niece and her handsome fiancé! I hope this quilt will add the warm reminder of family love and support to their home. We live several states apart and don’t get to see them often. It’s nice to think of them snuggled together under this cozy quilt, watching a movie or sharing their day’s experiences.

The Lakeside Star pattern is a good choice for a quilt intended for a young couple.  It’s bold and graphic, which fits ...

Summer Moon QAL: July blocks from Carried Away Quilting

Hello quilting friends! I’m popping in today to share my July blocks for the Summer Moon Quilt Along with Fat Quarter Shop. We’re only three months into the quilt along, so there is plenty of time for you to join! The July assignment included Bear's Track, Buzzard Roost and Crown of Thorns blocks.

For the Bear’s Track block, I pulled four robin’s egg blue prints from Lella Boutique’s Nest collection to make the paws, and anchored them with a little green center square. Isn’t that about the prettiest shade of blue you have ...

Postage Stamp Star block with Fat Quarter Shop from Carried Away Quilting

A few weeks ago, the creative folks at the Fat Quarter shop asked if I’d like to sew a project for their Classic & Vintage series, where they take a traditional block (like those found in old catalogs and vintage quilts) and give it a fresh spin in a new pattern. Well, of course I said yes and signed up to make their Postage Stamp Star block!

The block finishes at 18” square, which is a great size for a table topper or wall hanging. The piecing is simple and straightforward. I was able to sew, quilt and bind my ...

Next Up: a graduation quilt from Carried Away Quilting

I have a special quilt to share with you today, a gift for our niece Molly, who is graduating from high school. Molly is a sweet, smart, soft-spoken young lady who also has a great sense of humor. With her easy-going temperament and kind ways, I just know she will make a positive mark on the world.  It makes me happy to be sending a quilt along with her to college, to remind her how much she is loved.

When I asked Molly if there was a style or color combination she would like for her quilt, she wasn’t ...

Lakeside Star: a crimson version from Carried Away Quilting

In February I introduced you to my new fat quarter pattern, Lakeside Star. This bold, dynamic quilt makes a statement with thoughtful color and print placement. My original quilt showcased a blue, butterscotch and taupe color combination. I recently completed another Lakeside Star top featuring crimson, brown and taupe prints. I’m doing my final pressing and then she’ll be off to the quilter!

This crimson version of Lakeside Star could be considered a winter or Christmas quilt, as some of the prints have a subtle seasonal motif.  But I think the overall effect is such that the quilt ...

A Tumbler quilt for my sewing room from Carried Away Quilting

A few weeks ago I told you about a new project I was starting, a Tumbler quilt. I’m pleased to share the final result with you, a sweet little quilt for my sewing room. She’s a super cute complement to the Lone Star quilt I shared with you last spring.

While the Lone Star quilt hangs above my cutting table (a DIY project made by my husband and me), the new Tumbler quilt is displayed in an opposite corner of the room where I can see her from my sewing machine. I’ve used an old yard stick ...

New project: a Tumbler quilt from Carried Away Quilting

I’ve wanted to make a Tumbler quilt for some time. If you’re unfamiliar with that name, a tumbler quilt is made up of blocks that resemble a drinking glass. It’s a classic quilt layout that can take on a traditional or contemporary feeling depending on the fabrics selected. It’s also a terrific quilt pattern for busting your stash, which is exactly what I did this weekend. I pulled some of my favorite Moda leftovers and began cutting tumblers. Aren’t they cute?

I’m sure there are many patterns and templates available for sewing a Tumbler ...

Winter Flurries: a finished quilt top from Carried Away Quilting

Here in the United States, the Thanksgiving holiday has come and gone. In the Kelvington household, we cooked our turkey, enjoyed time spent with family, shopped a little, and started a tiny bit of Christmas decorating. I also managed to finish up this cute quilt top from the “Winter Flurries” mystery sew along with Fort Worth Fabric Studio.

This was such a fun project! I’ve never participated in a mystery sew along before, and it was intriguing to make a few blocks each week, all the while wondering what the final product would look like!

In week one we ...

Quilt retreat: A wonderful place to start a pumpkin quilt from Carried Away Quilting

This past weekend I attended an informal quilt retreat with long-time friends. We meet twice a year in the spring and fall to sew or scrapbook, eat, talk, laugh and enjoy each other’s company. I’ve been gathering with these lovely ladies for more than a decade, and it is truly a blessing. I’ve written about our Koronis Quilt Retreat before, if you’d like to read that post.  Today I wanted to pop in and show you some of the blocks I made at retreat!

You all know I am a big fan of Corey Yoder’s ...

Free mini quilt pattern: He Is Risen from Carried Away Quilting

Happy first day of spring!  It’s snowing again in Minnesota, making me all the more eager for spring to truly arrive. To keep my spirits up, I thought I would share a pretty mini quilt I made last night. It’s called “He Is Risen,” and it’s a free pattern on my Craftsy Shop!

I introduced you to this Easter pattern two years ago.  My original quilt (pictured below) was made using Strawberry Fields Revisited by Fig Tree & Company for Moda.  I just loved the soft, nurturing pastels, and I gave this mini quilt to my mom.

I ...

Kitchen table quilts from Carried Away Quilting

I really love a kitchen table quilt. To me it says, “Sit a spell, sip some coffee, share your news with me.” I don’t think we do enough of that these days, but we used to.  Some of my best memories of my Grandma Arlene include sitting at her kitchen table, where we would all gather and eat cookies and talk. We would beg Grandpa Ed to take out his dentures and talk funny to us.  Grandma would make tea on the stove top and stir in a teaspoon of Orange Tang to give it some zest. And I ...

Jolly Braid Tote Bag from Fat Quarter Shop's Jolly Jabber

We love quilts! But when quilting techniques can be used to make a bag, we are all in. We are extremely excited to present the Jolly Braid Tote Bag! A bag that is so versatile it can be used for holding quilting materials, picnics and everyday use. This bag is particularly appealing because of its signature braided look that looks intricate but is actually easy to do!

We took our own spin on the Jolly Braid Tote Bag and used Farmer’s Daughter by Lella Boutique for Moda Fabrics. The awesome thing about using this collection to make the Jolly ...
