I'm back! from Grandma's Red Needle

Hello everyone!
I'm back!
You may wonder where on earth I've been?! A couple of days after my previous blog post (April 1, 2020), the I-net connection went down and later on the computer (windows-7) crashed! Very 'good' timing during the lock-down! NOT! To make a long story short; our dear friend and tech-guru got the computer up running again, now on Windows-10 and most files from W-7 are saved! For the I-net connection, we had to give up the ISP we have had for some years (worst customer service ever!) and hook up to another one. We ...

A new bad finish from Fleur de Lis Quilts and Accessories

A few days ago I mentioned that I'd started a new quilt top. Frustrated with one thing, I decided to try working on something new. It doesn't work that way apparently. At least not for me. If I could have the time back that I've spent anguishing over these two quilts, I'd be able to make one king. Ah well, c'est la vie.

At this point I have abandoned the front of the quilt. I don't like it. I've tried several things. I don't like any of them and am moving on ...

A new bad start from Fleur de Lis Quilts and Accessories

That worrisome thing on the design wall just doesn't appeal to me right now. It's been three weeks since I last looked at it. I'm suffering with a touch of CoVid19. It's not bad, considering people are dying. Nonetheless, I do feel yucky. I've managed to get out of bed. Some days barely.

Today I'm trying to convince myself that I can do more, so I've dressed, sat outside to breathe in fresh air, and took a look at what was happening in the studio before this wretched virus turned me into a ...

Personalizing Our Own Log Cabin from Art Gallery Fabrics-The Creative Blog

Hi, fabric friends!

I’m excited to be bringing you a fresh new topic today: Log Cabins! I really wanted to talk about this today because not too long ago we asked you on social media, which quintessential block would you be?

We had an overwhelming amount of responses, and after counting your votes, Log Cabin was the winner! Now we really wanted to show the versatility of this classic quilt block and how you can make it unique to YOU. With this idea in mind, myself and a couple of girls at the studio were excited to take a ...

Drawstring Baskets from Quilting Stories

Drawstring basket

Drawstring basket

Since some time I wish to sew drawstring baskets for my grandchildren. After searching on Pinterest and on various blogs, I was lucky to find a really great tutorial on this blog : Threading My Way. I must say that I never found such a perfect tutorial, so well explained that you cannot make any mistake. I followed step by step the explanations and had not the least problem. I sewed the orange basket first, and was so satisfied with the result that next day I did a blue one. Tomorrow a pink one! Thank you Pam for Australia!

Scrappy Quilting and Rainy Week from Grandma's Red Needle

It has been a wet week weather wise. We had a 'cyclone warning class 3' caused by Moderate Tropical Cyclone 'Diane'. 'Class 3' means 'no venture out'. 'Diane' passed 40 km (24.85 miles) off the North coast before 04:00 a.m. Saturday morning and we did not even hear the wind or rain! Luckily it was not a strong cyclone; no flooding or other damages in our area.

I've been super busy with a couple of my scrappy UFO's and happy to say I have a FINISH!

This is my UFO #10 (my UFO list) and ...

Sunday Quilt Inspiration: Buttons (again) from Fleur de Lis Quilts and Accessories

One of my most popular posts is this one on buttons. Interestingly, just yesterday (which was Sunday, I'm a day late posting) I found a place to exhibit the quilt mentioned in that post. Anyway I thought it serendipitous enough to pull another SQI from the idea. So, first a few buttons from this board....

Vintage Buttons from Ebay.

Creative quilting options for Fireside Modern Drunkards Path quilt from Quilt Social

In yesterday’s post, I demonstrated my method of quilt sandwiching. The time has come to discuss quilting and what I call, the appliquilting that I have referencing all week with my Fireside Modern Drunkards Path quilt made with the luscious Banyan Batiks Jungle Rose Cool fabric.

Fireside Modern Drunkards Path quilt

How to choose the quilting for a quilt

There are many things to consider for quilting whenever a quilt is completed and in my mind they are as follows:

  • Purpose of the quilt, i.e. is it to be used a lot and needs frequent laundering and ...

How to sandwich a quilt for domestic machine quilting, the easy way from Quilt Social

All week, I have been explaining the process of making a quilt to showcase the beautiful Banyan Batiks Jungle Rose Cool Banyan fabric. Yesterday I pieced my quilt together and now I’m ready to demonstrate my method of quilt sandwiching.

For smaller projects and in particular this Fireside Modern Drunkards Path lap quilt. It’s great to use my domestic machine as I love the peaceful time of just sitting at my sewing machine and quilting. I love being able to focus in close and isolate just the area I’m working on. It gives me a real sense ...

The last 2 days, I’ve been discussing fabric selection with Jungle Rose Cool fabric from Banyan Batiks and the supplies needed along with cutting instructions for the gorgeous Fireside Modern Drunkards Path lap quilt shown below.

Today, I’ll discuss how to applique the arcs and get moving on the piecing process.

Yes! You can make this just in time for Christmas, it’s so easy!

Cutting Jungle Rose fabric for a modern drunkards path quilt from Quilt Social

Yesterday, I spoke about the gorgeous Banyan Batiks Jungle Rose Cool fabric and showed an image of the finished quilt. Today, I’m discussing cutting and preparing the fabric.

What’s really neat about batik fabric is that it doesn’t fray as easy as other types of cotton quilting fabric. Because of this fact, I planned this quilt with raw edge applique and a quick and easy quilting method in mind. Also, there’s typically no wrong or right side with batiks and this makes it easy to piece because you don’t have to worry about right sides ...

Celebrating the Art of Embroidery: Meriwether Fabrics from Art Gallery Fabrics-The Creative Blog

Meriwether_banner

Today is a lovely day here in south Florida because currently, the temperature is in the 60s! That's pretty cold down here considering we are pretty used to 90-degree weather almost all year round- it's nice to have a break from the rain too. When there is not a single cloud in the sky, the sun is out, and there is a cool breeze, it's the perfect recipe for making me happy! Which brings me to today's latest AGF collection release, Meriwether

Meaning "happy weather" in Middle English, this collection is available in 16 prints ...
