Little Projects from From My Carolina Home

I’ve had a few little projects to do lately, working around lots of meetings and the quilt show. While I was manning the booth at the show, a friend of mine came by. She loved the Hungry Animal alphabet lullaby quilt, saying it was just so cute. After the show, she found out that another friend would be welcoming a grandchild, and asked if one was still for sale. But, I had sold both the ones I had during the show. I did have another panel, so I made one for her. I had some coordinating print for the ...

Spring Projects from From My Carolina Home

With the warming weather, I think many of us get a bit of cabin fever, wanting to do some outdoor activities and spring projects. I thought it was time to hang a Spring Wreath. I made this one a few years ago, and it is still looking good.

Spring is a nice time to send some special cards, especially if you missed sending Easter ones like I did. These rabbits work on the inside as well as the front of a card. Punching a decorative window on the front gives you a dimensional card. See the entire post on how ...

In case you missed it, Series 3 of our popular Mondays with Marcus designer project series is now in full swing, following a fun multi-designer launch on Valentines’ Day! Then, the inspiration continued with Gennifer March’s ORANGE yo-yo embellished gift tags, and Nancy Rink’s cheery YELLOW stylized log cabin wall hanging. If you missed the debuts, no worries – you can get links all of the Series 3 projects throughout. And each Monday through April 18, we’ll have another new designer color launch (or two!)

It is time! from QUilting By-You

It is time!

If you haven’t changed your needle on your machine since before Chirstmas, it is time to put in a new one.

If you haven’t recently changed out your rotary cutting blade, it is time to use a new one.

If you haven’t cleaned out your sewing machine since Thanksgiving, it is time to pull out the bobbin and dig out some lint or schedule service so that your local professional can make sure that you are running in tip top shape.

If you haven’t cleaned your iron, now is the time to take ...

Happy February! from QUilting By-You

Since it’s the first of the month, let’s talk about those UFO’s shall we? In case you were wondering, I did complete the latch hook complete with rug binding. Just don’t look too closely at the binding. That part is not really done well and I am thinking that at some point I will need to redo that binding.

Ta-Da! It has also been given to my son where it graced his floor immediately. One done only about a million to go (or so it feels). It is time to move on to February! One of ...

Fabric Organization from QUilting By-You

So, how do you organize your fabric? If you aren’t a quilter, how do you organize your crafting supplies?

I’m sure that there are some of us who are super organized and while I would love to be one of those people, I’m afraid that it just is not in me to be one. That being said, I do have my fabric somewhat organized. My method is fairly simple. I have some drawers and anything that is a fat quarter to a 1 yd cut is uniformly folded and sorted by color. Anything smaller than a fat ...

Sunday Chat from From My Carolina Home

We were housebound for four days this past week, which meant a lot of projects were either finished or new ones begun. A few Zoom calls took up a bit of time, and I got a bit more progress on the epic historical novel I’m currently reading. Just before the snow started, I got this photo of Oliver on the retaining wall, and noticed my daffodils are coming up way too early! It was so warm before the snow, they are confused. I think they’ll be OK, daffodils can take the cold.

On the feeder, a huge pileated ...

January UFO Report! from QUilting By-You

How has your week been? Hopefully you are staying warm and healthy. Have you been working on any projects or maybe made any progress on your crafting area?

I have! Slowly but steadily I am making progress in my room. My cutting table is just about usable and I have most of my sewing table cleared. Next up is the ironing board. Why is it that flat spaces seem to have some sort of magnetic power that attracts all the things to be placed on them? Do you find that to be true in your area? (Or maybe even the ...

Back from the Craft Shows! from QUilting By-You

We made it, we survived, and we even sold some things! We weren’t sure what to expect over the weekend except for one thing – we would be tired at the end of it. And we certainly were, and thus why we are a little late (and short) with our posting this week.

Usually at these types of events we meet some interesting people and hopefully make some connections for people to come to the shop. While there are a couple of guilds in our area, many of our customers are not part of guilds and this becomes a great ...

Tip of the Iceberg. from QUilting By-You

We talk about the tip of the iceberg at home a lot. How icebergs are tricky things…that you can only see a portion above the water while the greater mass lies below the surface. We talk about how the tip of the iceberg represents our final product; the result of our work. The mass below represents the work that it takes to get the result, or the part of the iceberg you can’t see. The boys wanted to start a podcast – so they are learning a lot about the work that lies beneath the surface.

A couple of ...

Sunday Chat from From My Carolina Home

It is the last Sunday of the month, and Autumn arrived this week with beautifully cool days. The garden is winding down, but I am still harvesting a lot of tomatoes! This was a couple of days worth, with lots of little cherry tomatoes and another Cherokee purple.

The hydrangea is covered in dark pink/green blooms as is usual for it in the fall. Here and there are lighter color ones, but most are the darker ones.

I have one beautiful lavendar one that has been blooming for over a week now. It is a lovely pure lavendar color ...

Update on the Safelight Quilts from From My Carolina Home

It was fun to go to the post office this week, as blocks are coming in for our Safelight Quilts. Not only blocks, but ready-to-quilt flimsies, plus two fully completed quilts!! These wonderful scrappy blocks were sent in by Joan Hannes. Thank you!

Then, ten red and white blocks arrived from Carole Leaverton.

This flimsy was given to our guild from a gentleman who wanted to find a charity for his late wife’s unfinished projects. I said I’d take it to quilt, and donate to the Safelight quilt drive. I found some fabric that will work for a ...

How early is too early? from QUilting By-You

So, we walk into a store in late August and are bombarded by all things Halloween. At first I feel a little rushed and frustrated. Why so early? We all know that Halloween candy purchased in August is not going to make it to trick or treat time!

But lately I’ve been thinking. How early is too early? When July hits, we start to think about “Christmas in July”. Some of us gift items crafted by us and that takes time. We might be crafting year round to not feel so rushed when those holiday deadlines come around. We ...

Autumn Jubilee is Coming! from From My Carolina Home

For the sixth year, I’ll be hosting Autumn Jubilee the month of October. I’ve been working on getting some great giveaway prizes, designing projects and cooking up a new recipe.

I have put all the rules and tips for entering the contests on a Rules and Notices page. See that page to be sure you understand how to enter the upcoming drawings. In past years, there have been many disqualifications for entries not meeting the requirements of the entry, so be sure you know the rules and follow them.

Autumn Jubilee patterns remain on the blog, and free ...

Time to Tweak it a Little. from QUilting By-You

Hopefully we can now get back to our regularly scheduled posting habits!

We will certainly pick up where we left off with our Jacob’s Ladder blocks, but that will have to wait until next time. They are all sitting patiently waiting until it is their turn.

We also fell down a bit on UFO stuff. That’s okay too. I’m sure that we have all realized over the last year or so that sometimes life happens and we have to shift our priorities to take care of those things that are necessary. Hopefully you are all making UFO ...

Sunday Chat from From My Carolina Home

Coming home from our adventures in Virginia, the tomato plants were prolific in our absence. The day we left, I gave all I had at that time to my neighbor for her help watering my plants while we were gone. This basket was collected the day we got back, and a few went on salads for dinner the next evening. There are dozens more on the plants yet to come.

So I told you something fun happened while we were at the quaint little roadside motel in Luray. Looking down at the lovely row of flowers, I noticed something on ...

Sunday Chat from From My Carolina Home

This week has just been so busy, with car club events, playing pickleball, quilt meetings and lunch with friends. It is no wonder that I have little accomplished in the sewing and crafting room for the week. On Thursday, I went to a quilt area meeting then stopped by the Quilts of Valor sew day. I picked up this fabulous top, batting and backing that I’ll quilt for them. This striking eagles panel is surrounded by pieced blocks.

I did manage to get it loaded on the longarm, and I’ll show you the quilting when it is done ...
