Sorting and moving things................ from Exuberant Color

I have never kept track of how many spools I emptied until 2022.  I pinned a bag to my bulletin board and dropped the empty spools into it all year.  That cardboard tube was the center for a large quantity of thread; I think about 1000 yards.

The 5 white skinny spools had 1200 yards on each of them.  I used a lot of longarm thread too but didn't empty any of the spools.  Now another bag will be started this year.

I sorted many items that needed putting away, carried several boxes to the basement where they belong ...

December 2022 monthly recap and Happy New Year!.......... from Exuberant Color

In December I had 2 finishes.  If I hadn't had so many problems when quilting the larger one I might have gotten another quilted.  Gridlock, the large one is my version of the one of the same name in Kaffe Fassett's book Glorious Patchwork.  It is 65" x 91".  I finished the top in late November 2021 so it took a year to get it in the quilting lineup.  The colorwash is 29.5" square and is made of all batik fabrics.

Two fairly large quilt tops were finally sewn together too.  The one on the left is ...

Another finish............... from Exuberant Color

I spent most of the day hand stitching the binding, sewing the bottom edge of the hanging sleeve and sewing on a label on this colorwash wallhanging.  It ended up about 29.5" square.

The backing has another color stripe in toward the center of the backing.  I used that same color stripe for the hanging sleeve.  This one is made of all batik, front and back.

I worked for a while on the border for the Sunday only top but only made decisions on one of the borders.  I need to work harder on that one today.

I spent ...

Choosing binding............. from Exuberant Color

The binding is finally selected and cut for the colorwash wall hanging.  It is very dark, dull purple.  You could almost mistake it for dark brown.  Nice and neutral.

I got it sewn on and hand stitched about 4" to make sure I like it.  I think it works well so I'll be stitching away today.

I did another load of laundry yesterday and there is still one more load to do today.  I usually do a load once every 5 days, dark one time and light the next time.  I heard recently that the younger generation doesn't ...

Getting ready to quilt.............. from Exuberant Color

The thread basting was finished yesterday and now the colorwash is on the sewing table for thread selection.

I think I will use a 60 wt. thread in the bobbin in a light gray or light blue.

If you are interested in the Colorwash 360 class and want to be on the waitlist for early notification  go to this link.

This is why night sewing is a challenge.  The brown on the right is the right side of the fabric, the one on the left is wrong side.  This is one of the few fabrics that looks almost as good ...

Unique batiks............ from Exuberant Color

I bought some unique batiks in the 1990s that make very interesting backings. You can see the look of the large scale stripe backing and the quilt top I'll pair with it.

It's time to start basting again. I'm excited to finish this one because its a sample for my class.

It's been almost two years since I've offered my Colorwash class (which is how to master color and value). A lot of you have been asking when it would be offered again...and I'm happy to say, very soon.

I created a die ...

Sewing # 3 from the design wall..................... from Exuberant Color

This is the third quilt top to finish from my blog post 3 days ago where I showed parts of 3 quilts on the design wall.  I finished sewing it at 10:30 last night.  It is 32" x 31.5".  It is pressed and ready for the staystitching around the edges.  Speaking of that I did the staystitching on Charley in the Forest and The Other16 Patch yesterday afternoon.  Also I got the seam sewn in a backing ready to load on the longarm.

I covered my tomato plants late yesterday afternoon with help from my almost 5 year ...

Blocks all made............. from Exuberant Color

I finished sewing all of the blocks for "the other 16 patch" (compared to the 16 patch made with all squares).  I'm pretty sure this is the final layout.  I'm thinking about putting a border on this one.

This was the design wall at 6:30 p.m.  Earlier in the day I sewed the first 4 columns of the colorwash and I folded them accordion style and pinned them above the rest of the pieces.  Below the colorwash are all of the pieces for the last 3 big blocks of the log cabin star quilt.

By 8 ...

Sunday only project again............ from Exuberant Color

While I was going through the large scraps for the Square Within quilt I found some smaller scraps the perfect size for cutting more triangles for the Sunday only project.  If you aren't familiar with this, here is a post that explains this quilt.  I think I have 141 triangle strips sewn now.

I got the last seams sewn in the other quilt but never made it to the ironing table.

I was cleaning off a portion of my cutting table and there was a group of batik colorwash pieces there.  I decided to see if there was enough ...

July 2022 Monthly recap............... from Exuberant Color

I had 3 finishes for July, no new quilt tops, yay!!  Of course there are at least 3 quilt tops in progress so.....

The African colorwash wallhanging is 34" x 42", the yellow zig zag sweet little baby quilt is 29" x 35" and the quarter square yellow quilt is 55" x 71".  Yellow is my favorite color so these 2 make me very happy.  I love the African colorwash too and I'll probably keep it until I make the next even better one some day.  This is #3 in the series.

The details of this quilt were on ...

A finish for July............ from Exuberant Color

I finished the last side of the binding last night so this is an official finish.  It is 34" x 42", the largest of the 3 African colorwash wall hangings that I have made.

I thought this older fabric was perfect for the backing.  It is a little heavier than most printed quilting cottons which makes it perfect for a wall hanging backing.

I went to the basement to cut some fabrics but these switch plate blocks were still laying there.  I decided to group all 5 or 6 alike together and group colors.  I think I have created a ...

Off the wall and at the machine...plus quilt top portraits......... from Exuberant Color

All of the decisions were made on the improv strip pieced quilt top so it moved from design wall to sewing station.  I have it about half sewn together as of last night.

After the improv quilt came down the pastel batik 16 patch went up for its portrait.  I pressed this one, a 94" long backing and the colorwash yesterday afternoon.  I forgot to add my extra lighting for it so maybe I'll try again but this photo is pretty true to how it looks.  It is 64" x 80".

This is batik colorwash #24 and it is ...

Row 10 sewn................ from Exuberant Color

I moved some rows around and think I have a pretty good balance of dark and light now.  Then I sewed the 9" row and put it up on the right edge.  I need to add another small section to the bottom of it.  9 of the rows will finish at 10" tall and one row at 9".  I could try to insert the 9" row in the middle somewhere or I could trim the row on the left to 9.5" to match the right edge row.  If I did trim it I could try the 9" rows in ...

Colorwash progress.............. from Exuberant Color

Two and a half hours and the colorwash is webbed in one direction and now I'm starting on the cross rows.  I only made a couple adjustments to the design today.

I can't believe I missed this bloom and new bud on the white cactus.  I guess because the pot is white it was kind of camouflaged.  I turned the pot around so I could get this photo.

While I was standing by that window I looked out and I think my blackberry Lily has started growing and to the right and back a little that looks like ...

9 rows............. from Exuberant Color

I have 9 rows sewn now, each row will finish at 10" tall.  Right now it would finish at about 80" x 90".  I have enough blocks made to sew one 9" finished row and partial rows of 10" and 7".  I just have to decide if I want 2 rows of shorter heights interspersed amongst the 10" rows.  This is being designed sideways on the wall, the order of the rows not determined yet.  I think maybe the last row on the right would look good between rows 2 and 3 on the left.

I changed this colorwash at ...

View from the sewing chair............... from Exuberant Color

Over the last 30 days I have been cutting batik kits for a future colorwash class.  I always make a wallhanging from the kit so I know how well it works.  I worked on this one yesterday and it still needs some tweaking.

It was 71 degrees yesterday afternoon the only time I remembered to check.  I wanted to see what was coming up and the Sedums seem to be the only thing that is making good progress.

These 2 are on the other side of the porch from the ones I cleaned up a few days ago.  There are ...

Binding time............ from Exuberant Color

My colorwash wallhanging was nagging me to trim it and sew on the binding.

I got one side hand sewn and about 10" along the next edge.  My shoulder was complaining so I'll work on this over a few days.

Outside I got all of the rest of the peonies cut down and one Annabelle hydrangea bush trimmed.  It will be in the 60s today so I hope to get a lot more done.

Quilting finished......... from Exuberant Color

I finally finished the ditch quilting on the batik colorwash wallhanging.  I think I used this backing on another colorwash too.  Today I'll get it trimmed and find a binding fabric.  I have a feeling it will be purple.

Now I can concentrate on some blocks for the Gridlock quilt.  So far I'm using strips that were already cut and scraps that I can cut strips or 4.5" squares out of.  I'm ready to dig into the big bin of yardage and cut some more fabrics.

Preparing to baste........... from Exuberant Color

On a gloomy dark and rainy day yesterday all I got done was preparing  this 40" square Colorwash wallhanging for basting.  We got another half inch of rain by yesterday morning at 8 a.m. and I will check this morning to see what the last 24 hour total is.

Third time is a charm.............. from Exuberant Color

On my third try I found the perfect brown for the claws on this Bear Paw block.  The other 2 choices just weren't quite right.

The first two blocks are sewn.....

...and I started working on a layout of a third block.

First finish for October.

I'm having a hard time getting a straight on shot of this Floral Colorwash #7.  This was the best one.

For my own record I'm trying to keep track of the backing fabrics that I have used.  This quilt is about 30" square.

While the design wall was empty and the ...
