Revised Plans for Tabby Road Quilt: Giant Clam Shells! from Cheeky Cognoscenti

So I'm still mulling those Tula Pink Tabby Road fabrics and what to do with them.  I posted several options that I was kicking around here about a week ago, but I wasn't 100% in love with any of them.  My newest plan is to forget my Accuquilt GO! dies and go old school, cutting REALLY BIG 9 1/2" clam shells with a rotary cutter and an acrylic template.

57" x 57" Quilt Using 9 1/2" Clam Shells
See how much better the larger patch size showcases the large scale prints in this collection?  Here's ...

Miniatures from Quilt Obsession

I know that I’m in the minority on this, but I love working with small pieces. And while I continue working on piecing the blocks for the Pickled Ladies pieced border, I keep thinking about a miniature — hmm, something. What it might be, I have no idea quite yet.

Maybe I’ll keep making as many of these tiny Carpenter’s Wheel blocks as I can and turn this into something other than a 12″ miniature?

Maybe I’ll do something other than this with the 2″ clamshells. One idea that I can’t seem to stop thinking about ...

Pickled Ladies Completion from Quilt Obsession

The centre of the Pickled Ladies top is completed, that is. There’s still more to come for this top. But now all the half pickled clams have been added  and so the centre of the quilt top is done and I’m so excited that I can barely stand it!

There are bits at the edges that will get dealt with when the first of the two borders is attached. One of the two borders involves quite a bit of piecing, although I have that almost halfway done now. As long as I manage to stay away from distractions ...

A Very Favourite Fabric from Quilt Obsession

Years ago (and I’m not sure quite how many years that may have been, but I think it’s at least eight), I bought a half yard of this fabric. I fell in love with it at the store the second I saw it.

It’s in Chintz Circles.

And Shabby Chic Joseph’s Coat.

It’s part of the shabby chic Yin Yang blocks, which is still a quilt top in progress with lots and lots more to be done.

It definitely became one of the Pickled Ladies. I had to force myself to do a little swiss-cheese ...

A Disco Kitty Followed Me Home: Tabby Road by Tula Pink for FreeSpirit Fabrics from Cheeky Cognoscenti

I don't normally post about fabric collections.  I don't do any advertising or sponsorships, and I'm not trying to sell you anything.  But I'm totally smitten with Tula Pink's Tabby Road collection for FreeSpirit Fabrics, especially the Disco Kitty and Cat Snacks prints.

Tula Pink's Tabby Road Collection for FreeSpirit Fabrics
Most of you know that we're dog people at my house (Rottweillers are for snuggling.  And for singing), but I have several friends who are cat lovers and these fabrics are just PERFECT for one of my friends in particular, so never ...

Fruit Salad from Quilt Obsession

Remember this four-patch clamshell unit that I posted last November? Making those four-patch clams was addictive, so making them and then joining them all together was another thing I worked on throughout the winter.

Putting Fruit Salad together really was fun as I saw each intersection turn out so, so well. Of course, having the perfect stitching lines and matching points printed on the back of my fabric is what made that easy.

I used the 4″ Inklingo clamshell collection and loved every second of making this. I’m sure another four-patch clamshell quilt is in my future as I ...

More Half Pickled Ladies from Quilt Obsession

The final eight half clamshell pickles are done – so now it’s time to start sewing them on to the top. But first, here are the final eight.

I was happy to find so many of my floral fabrics had flowers small enough for all the clamshell pickles, including all the partial ones. Some very small.

Some quite a bit larger.

Some light.

Some darker.

Lots of roses, large …

… and small.

Another light one.

And one of my favourites.

Now that all the half Pickled Ladies are done, it’s time for lots of curved piecing and continuous stitching as ...

Half Pickled Ladies on the Side from Quilt Obsession

I had made the little strips of triangles for the side halves of the Clamshell Pickles a long time ago and they’ve been sitting waiting, all this time, for me to finally get the fabrics chosen and half Pickled Ladies printed for each one.

All that was left was some nice curved piecing to add the little strips of the triangles to the half clamshell pickles, which went very quickly, and all the ones needed for one side are now done.

Using the window template made it very quick to find fabrics that worked for the side halves. The ...

What Happens In Florida Doesn't Stay In Florida: Fabric Shopping, Slow Stitching, and a Splash in the Pool... Oh, and Open Heart Surgery. from Cheeky Cognoscenti

Well, hello there, blogosphere!  I've been in Naples, Florida all last week visiting my in-laws and just got home in time for Maundy Thursday church services.  While in Florida, my darling husband offered to take me to the local quilt shop, Flash Sew and Quilt.  And once we got there, and I started picking out fabric, he was SURPRISED.  Isn't that funny?  What did he THINK I was going to do at the quilt shop -- just pet the fabrics and then leave empty-handed?!  Silly man.

Fat Quarters, Layer Cakes, Charm Packs, and Kona Solids Skinny Strips
The assorted ...

Half Pickled Ladies from Quilt Obsession

Yes, I know it has been a long time since I blogged, but I have been busy sewing all this time. This post will be a bit short on words, but there are lots of pictures.

Part of the piecing has involved finally getting the Pickled Ladies top to the point I needed to choose fabrics for the edges so that I’d have a straight edge before I start attaching the borders.

So I began with window templates for the top and bottom pieces.

And window templates for the two sides.

Six and a half hours later, after auditioning ...

Back to the Pineapple Log Cabin for Now, with Clamshells On the Horizon from Cheeky Cognoscenti

Hello and Happy New Year 2017!  This post will be short and sweet, because I want to get back to my sewing room before the day gets away from me.  After a hectic holiday season and a week of illness that saw me lying around the house amidst piles of crumpled Kleenex and steaming cups of Theraflu, I finally felt well enough to play with fabric yesterday.  I finished another block for my pineapple log cabin quilt:

17 3/4" Pineapple Log Cabin Block #27 of 36
That's block #27 out of 36 needed for my California King quilt ...

Clam Chowder from Quilt Obsession

I know, I know – I said I’d try to blog more often. Well, at least this time it hasn’t been over three months since I last blogged. In fact, it’s just under two months, so maybe I”m getting a bit better at blogging a tad more regularly.

What have I been doing? I’ve been totally engrossed in piecing clamshells.

The obsession began with this  – a Clamshell Rose block. It measures 14″ and is destined to be the cover for a piecing book. I think I may just have enough of the red to make a ...

Lots of workshops and travel from Focus On Quilts

I’ve been doing a LOT of travelling in the last few weeks.  I do love teaching outside of Melbourne and getting to know quilters from the eastern states!

In late August I was booked in for a couple of workshops on two consecutive weekends, one in Sydney and one in Brisbane.  I decided to give myself a mini holiday and stay with a girlfriend in Sydney between the workshops.  The first workshop in Sydney was a meditation workshop (yes I do them as well).  I then spent the week relaxing, sewing and doing some of my day job.

The ...
