Cattle go to Town... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

This was a very wet, long winter.

A few of the mother cows have long feet

that need to be trimmed.

We hauled them to town to the vet school...

Dr. Joe and the vet students

took good care of our cattle.

You can watch the hoof trimming

in the video below:

Trail Camera.....Bottle Calves from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

Bottle Babies

The bottle calves are doing quite well.

They drink a 3 pint bottle of milk 3 x daily.

I have offered them hay and grain.

The red grain box is always empty?

I wanted to see who was eating all of the grain?

I thought maybe the barn swallows

were eating it?

Maybe our chickens were eating it?

We set up the trail camera in the calf pen

to see who was eating the grain...

It looks like Number 25

is eating most of the grain.

Surprise.....another set of Twins from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

We can go for years and never have a set of

TWINS...

Yesterday we had our third set of twin calves.

Their mother is a 1st time heifer...

heifers rarely make much milk.....sigh.

We have them sorted off into a smaller pasture

so we can keep an eye on them for a few days

to be sure the heifer is caring for them.

The goats peeked around the corner of the barn

to see what all the commotion was about

while we were sorting off the new twins.

We have 5 heifers left to calve.

Then we can put ...

Bottle Babies... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

This 2 month old twin calf number 25

is living @ our barn here @ home

and we are feeding him on a bottle...

He is lonely and bawls a lot.

The barn is next to our house, so we can

hear him....LOUD and CLEAR!

We made a trip to the dairy this week

and look what we brought home:

A day old Holstein bull calf...

He has super long legs and looks like a giraffe!

Number 25 likes him...

they sleep together in the barn

and number 25 doesn't bawl anymore.

I captured video of these 2 babies

Moving Day......Twin Calves from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

For those of you who have been following

the story of Mama cow and her twins

for the past two months...

Today is moving day...

We will put both calves out to pasture

 with their mama...

We are hoping mama will feed BOTH twins,

up until now she has preferred the heifer calf

and not the bull calf.

Below is a video of moving them to pasture:

Elk and Cattle Grazing Together... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

This time of year it is FUN to watch the elk

come into the pasture in the evenings

and graze alongside our cattle...

No time to set up the tripod...

so this is the best I can do hand held zooming.

One of the female elk was very interested

in two of our baby calves.

I captured the encounter on video...

with a cup of steaming hot coffee...

3 generations of Kessi's will be

working yearling cattle today...

The little yellow building in the photo below

Our youngest son is here to help...

He will be taking over for me today

so I will have more time to keep the

camera in my hands.

Every Spring we round up the yearling cattle here @ home and get them ready to go out on summer pasture.  They get fly tags in their ears to keep the flies off their ...

Life @ the Goat Barn... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

I took my camera along to the goat barn...

We are feeding nannies and kids

this morning...

This is Lily

Her mama, Long Ears, is my favorite goat.

You can see that Lily inherited her mamas

beautiful long ears.

We are still in the calving mode...

a dozen cows left to calve yet.

This little white face calf makes me smile...

one black eye, one white eye.

This is the second set of twin calves...

They are several weeks old now and out in the

 pasture with their mama.

The livestock trailer is backed up to the silo...

The mama cow and her twins are loaded up.

We drove them across the river and a mile

down the road to our house...

The twin calves are unloaded first...

The yearling cattle are lined up around the

corral to check out the new arrivals...

Mama Cow is unloaded into the corral...

It will be easier for the Cow Boss and I

to let the twin calves nurse twice a day

Tree Roots... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

We pass by these tree roots every day

on our way to the Cow Barns...

Tree Roots

I notice them every time we pass by...

The roots are very smooth

from the cattle and the goats rubbing on them...

They are magnificent!

Just to give you some perspective as to the

size of these tree roots...

Here is a mama cow walking by the tree roots.

Here I am standing in the tree roots...

We continue to spend a lot of time tending

to the cattle

Twin Calves... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

We are spending a lot more time over

@ the Cow Barns...

Twin Calves were born last week...

Mama Cow has decided she only wants

the heifer calf.

She is rejecting the bull calf.

That means a lot more work for the Cow Boss.

One of us stays in the pen

while the calves nurse...

so mama won't push the bull calf away.

Maybe in a month or so we can convince her

that she loves both babies?

This darling calf was also born last week:

This little bull calf is awful cute!

His mama likes him just fine!

Turkey Vultures in the Cow Pasture... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

It must be SPRING here in

Western Oregon...

The Turkey Vultures are back!

We were out checking on the cows and calves

 this morning...

The turkey vultures are perched

on the fence posts...

I have been trying for years to get a close up view

of these beautiful birds...

I had my Canon 50X along today

and it zoomed in and captured the birds

having a solar bath...

They spread their wings...

it dries them out and also bakes off the bacteria

on their feathers

The zoom lens allowed me to stay far enough

away so we observed natural behavior ...

White Cow has her Calf... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

We raise Shorthorn mother cows

They are red and white and oh so beautiful...

Once in awhile a white calf is born:

We kept her as a replacement heifer...

A replacement heifer is a yearling calf that you keep (rather than selling it with the rest of the yearlings) and breed it to become a mother cow in your herd. Each year we keep the very best heifer calves, usually a dozen of them, to become mother cows in our herd.

Here she is as a mother cow.

She was in labor all day yesterday...

We checked on her throughout ...

Texas Traffic Hazard from the confused quilter

On the State Highway 97 between Pleasanton and Floresville traffic rather suddenly came to stop.  (it was late Saturday afternoon, so there were about 10 cars) Hubby and I wondered what was up, when suddenly we were no longer in doubt!

Right next to our little car looking right at me!

Of course there were men in trucks and running around trying to clear the road of this particular hazard!  I have wondered just how long it took to do it.

Hope your travels are hazard free!
