Is there a Secret Fabric Homing Instinct? from Life in the Scrapatch

“Perhaps there is some secret sort of homing instinct
in books that brings them to their perfect readers.
How delightful if that were true.”
... Juliet to Dawsey
― Mary Ann Shaffer, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

I like to think this true of fabric, too.

This half yard bundle jumped into my stash
when I was looking for fabrics
to fussy cut for my POTC Obsession.

I had not read the book
or watched the movie at that time.
In fact, I had never heard of it.

I just fell in love with this focus floral!

It is ...

Patchwork Quilt Along: Quilted, bound and ready for spring! from Carried Away Quilting

The weather is glorious in Minnesota today, so I took my Patchwork Quilt Along quilt on a little walk-about in my yard, attempting to take some pretty photos to share with you. It's a bit tricky when the sun is shining full force, but I found a protected spot on my front porch and snapped a few pictures.

I shared my completed top and pieced backing with you in December and then sent the project off to my friend and long-arm quilter Barb at Quilts on Broadway. We choose a soft and swirly loop-de-loop to complement the sweet nature ...

New pattern: Gumdrops, a layer cake quilt from Carried Away Quilting

When I was a child, gumdrops were one of my favorite treats. I loved the shape, the colors and (of course) the taste. A box of Dots still holds a childlike appeal to me, and the red ones are my favorite. So today I am pleased to share another new pattern with you: Gumdrops. Select a layer cake of candy-colored prints and you can make this sweet lap quilt in no time!

Gumdrops is made from one layer cake with coordinating fabric, and the pattern includes an easy-to-construct pieced backing made from 16 of the layer cake squares! Don’t ...

Patchwork Quilt Along: A finished top and back! from Carried Away Quilting

Today is an "icing on the cake" day in my quilting world.  I've finished my Patchwork Quilt Along top and the pieced backing!

This journey began in January of 2017, and I have thoroughly enjoyed making these petite blocks each month with Fat Quarter Shop. There is something so satisfying in taking your time and enjoying the piecing process. Now the reward is a beautiful quilt top, just ready to be quilted and bound.

My finished top is one row smaller than the pattern.  I ended up with a few blocks that I thought were just too light in ...

December Mother's Own blocks: Patchwork Quilt Along with Fat Quarter Shop from Carried Away Quilting

Here we are . . . it's December and we are sewing our final block in the 2017 Patchwork Quilt Along with Fat Quarter Shop. The December block is called Mother's Own.  What a sweet, nostalgic name.

I have two tools that I have found invaluable during this quilt along: Alphabitties and a Lori Holt Cute Cuts 5 1/2" square ruler. Alphabitties are a must for keeping these little pattern pieces organized. Besides being the correct size for squaring up my blocks, Lori's Cute Cuts ruler has fine, clear markings and a no slip backing.  I have several Cute ...
