Get Away – Storm at Sea from Carol Lyles Shaw

Get Away is the Island Batik Blog Hop theme for January 2019. And, I decided it was the perfect opportunity to make Storm at Sea, a traditional block–but I ended up altering it in a modern way.

First…the Fabrics! My fabrics are from the Soul Song Collection by Island Batik.

This collection goes from brights to muted black/cream.

I decided to use these fabrics shown below in the project–you’ll see why in a moment.

I used these Island Batik Soul Song fabrics and added an Island Batik neutral called Whip Cream.
I love the words ...

Island Batik Improv Log Cabin Tutorial from Carol Lyles Shaw

Making an improv log cabin quilt was a fun challenge.  In my newest Island Batik challenge, I combined two themes to create an improv log cabin wall hanging–here’s the tutorial showing how I did it.

Cozy Log Cabins is the first challenge theme that I used!  Log cabins are a great traditional pattern and I remember making many versions when I first learned to quilt many, many years ago.   It’s also a traditional pattern that you can easily make modern and I will show you how I did that.

The second theme is Whimsical and Wonky!  I ...

Island Batik Star Struck Quilt Tutorial from Carol Lyles Shaw

This month’s challenge for Island Batik is Star Struck and this is my quilt tutorial and free pattern for my modern version of a star.

I had a difficult time getting the color match on the full quilt photos! This looks a bit yellow–background fabric is actually white. See the close up of the star point below for the true colors.

The Island Batik Ambassador challenge this month was to create a Star Quilt.  I decided to take a modern approach and create an oversized wonky star using a limited color palette.  The modern design principles I played ...

Island Batik Modern Pattern Play from Carol Lyles Shaw

This month, the Island Batik challenge was secondary pattern play.  So, of course, I made it Island Batik Modern Pattern Play!

I returned to one of my favorite techniques–improvisational curved blocks that I call Parisian Curves. (Pattern and detailed tutorial is in my book, Madly Modern Quilts available online and at local quilt shops).  This post is a tutorial showing one way that I approach improvisational design. It’s an improvisational design process that I teach in my workshops to help students move away from the layout that I provide.

Parisian Curves Modern Batik Quilt from Carol Lyles Shaw

Hello everyone,  My explorations as an Island Batik Ambassador continues and wow, I had fun this month!

The Island Batik challenge for June was to make a modern batik quilt. Of course, this was music to my ears!

I decided to make a modern batik quilt using the Parisian Curves technique from my book, Madly Modern Quilts, available at local quilt shops, bookstores and online. Parisian Curves is also one of my most popular workshops–even very traditional quilters have a lot of fun learning to piece these improvisational curves.  If you have the book, you’ll find the process ...

Batik Modern Traditionalism Quilt Challenge from Carol Lyles Shaw

Modern traditionalism is one of the key principles in modern quilt design and it is one of my favorite jumping off points as well.  So I was very happy to see that the Island Batik Ambassador Challenge for April 2018 is to use a traditional quilt block or design as inspiration.

I chose the traditional 9 patch as my inspiration and used the Fractured Disappearing Nine Patch pattern from my first book, Madly Modern Quilts available online and at local quilt shops. This is also one of my most popular workshops.

Inset Circle Tea Pot Mug Rug from Carol Lyles Shaw

Here’s an update on making an inset circle.  It was my Island Batik Try A New Technique Challenge for March 2018.  I used one of my Inset Circle blocks to make a Tea Pot Mug Rug.

A couple days ago I posted about learning to make pieced inset circles.  I decided that one of the blocks would make a great mug rug for my ceramic tea pot.  I’m a tea drinker and keeping the tea pot warm can be a challenge. My kitchen counter tops are granite, and the tea in the pot will get cold really fast ...

Island Batik 6 Minute Inset Circle Tutorial from Carol Lyles Shaw

The Island Batik challenge for March 2018 is to Try A New Technique!  I chose to learn the 6 Minute Inset Circle Technique.

Here’s my Island Batik 6 Minute Inset Circle Tutorial!

As most of you know, in the past, I always cut my curved piecing freehand–no templates or pinning.  My circle shapes aren’t ‘perfect’–they can be roundish, or oval or even have a blunted angle to them. See my MidCentury Modern quilt information here.

I was curious to see how I might use a a precision pieced inset circle for some designs I have in ...

Island Batik Mod Hearts Mini Quilt from Carol Lyles Shaw

Our second February challenge for the Island Batik Ambassadors was to create a mini quilt. So, here’s my Island Batik Mod Hearts Mini Quilt Tutorial!

I do love making minis….they are the perfect size to test a new block idea or audition a fabric combination.  I’ve also participated in several really fun mini quilt swaps on Instagram.  At the end of this post, I’ve provided links back to some of my earlier adventures in making mini quilts.
