Island Batik Getaway - A Life Saver Quilt

The Island Batik Ambassadors are so glad you have embarked on the month-long Island Batik Getaway.

Last July, as Ambassadors, we received a box filled with Island Batik fabric. It included a large gift wrapped bundle of “surprise” fabric.  My Island Batik “surprise” bundle is 20 fabrics from the Flea Market collection. (bottom right)

The Getaway challenge is to include as many of the “surprise” fabrics in one quilt as we can. Using Electric Quilt 8, I designed a quilt that includes 15 fabrics from the Flea Market collection.

Have you used Creative ...

Island Batik Improv Log Cabin Tutorial from Carol Lyles Shaw

Making an improv log cabin quilt was a fun challenge.  In my newest Island Batik challenge, I combined two themes to create an improv log cabin wall hanging–here’s the tutorial showing how I did it.

Cozy Log Cabins is the first challenge theme that I used!  Log cabins are a great traditional pattern and I remember making many versions when I first learned to quilt many, many years ago.   It’s also a traditional pattern that you can easily make modern and I will show you how I did that.

The second theme is Whimsical and Wonky!  I ...

Island Batik Star Struck Quilt Tutorial from Carol Lyles Shaw

This month’s challenge for Island Batik is Star Struck and this is my quilt tutorial and free pattern for my modern version of a star.

I had a difficult time getting the color match on the full quilt photos! This looks a bit yellow–background fabric is actually white. See the close up of the star point below for the true colors.

The Island Batik Ambassador challenge this month was to create a Star Quilt.  I decided to take a modern approach and create an oversized wonky star using a limited color palette.  The modern design principles I played ...

Island Batik Modern Pattern Play from Carol Lyles Shaw

This month, the Island Batik challenge was secondary pattern play.  So, of course, I made it Island Batik Modern Pattern Play!

I returned to one of my favorite techniques–improvisational curved blocks that I call Parisian Curves. (Pattern and detailed tutorial is in my book, Madly Modern Quilts available online and at local quilt shops).  This post is a tutorial showing one way that I approach improvisational design. It’s an improvisational design process that I teach in my workshops to help students move away from the layout that I provide.

Parisian Curves Modern Batik Quilt from Carol Lyles Shaw

Hello everyone,  My explorations as an Island Batik Ambassador continues and wow, I had fun this month!

The Island Batik challenge for June was to make a modern batik quilt. Of course, this was music to my ears!

I decided to make a modern batik quilt using the Parisian Curves technique from my book, Madly Modern Quilts, available at local quilt shops, bookstores and online. Parisian Curves is also one of my most popular workshops–even very traditional quilters have a lot of fun learning to piece these improvisational curves.  If you have the book, you’ll find the process ...

To the Moon and Back from Cowtown Quilts

Reposted from my other site

This is another quilt I should have put up on my design wall before quilting it, because the colors and the pattern are striking.

Kathy called this her Universe quilt.  It has the 4 quadrants in colors.  Do you see the circles of color in the blues down in the lower left?  Those look like planets, too, and all the mottled batiks in the borders look, to me, like an Aurora Borealis.  So, how would you quilt this?

The colors are so magnificent, that it’s hard to see the quilting, but I decided to ...

Summer School Quilt

From rice-sized gobies to whale sharks as long as two school buses, the ocean is filled with an incredible variety of creatures.  Some travel in schools of up to 3 billion fish. Some “walk” on land. Some live for centuries.

But of all the fish in the sea, my very favorites are created with needle and thread. In this week’s new tutorial, Jenny demonstrates how to whip up a sea full of pretty fishes in every color of the rainbow. Click HERE to watch the tutorial!

Vintage Inspired - A Remake Of Winding Ways

Here is the final installment of the Island Batik April Challenge. My Winding Ways quilt remake includes these modern elements:

  • A diagonally bisection to emphasize the two fabric
  • An overlapping square layout of the winding ways blocks

These elements add a little tension to the curvy design of the traditional quilt block.  The fabrics, Southern Blooms and Neutral Vanilla, were provided by Island Batik.

If you missed the first and second installment, they are worth a look. They have the details of piecing the block using the AccuQuilt die, as well as ...

Batik Modern Traditionalism Quilt Challenge from Carol Lyles Shaw

Modern traditionalism is one of the key principles in modern quilt design and it is one of my favorite jumping off points as well.  So I was very happy to see that the Island Batik Ambassador Challenge for April 2018 is to use a traditional quilt block or design as inspiration.

I chose the traditional 9 patch as my inspiration and used the Fractured Disappearing Nine Patch pattern from my first book, Madly Modern Quilts available online and at local quilt shops. This is also one of my most popular workshops.
