Carol's Endangered Species from Sew Karen-ly Created...

Drumroll, please! If you follow my page, you know that Sew Karenly Created has participated as a dealer for the Aurifil Color Builder program for the past 2 years. Last year, the BOM patterns which accompanied the thread were designed by Cassandra Beaver of "The Not so Dramatic Life.". One of my subscribers was Carol Jackson from Pictou Co., N.S. I know that Carol really enjoyed the program, especially the quilting videos by Holly Anne Knight of String and Story, so much so in fact that she was one of the first to sign up again this year ...

Island Batik and Accuquilt ~ Christmas in July from Curlicue Creations

This is the quilt I made with the Accuquilt Tree of Life die.  I call my quilt Fountain of Life.

Disclaimer:  The supplies used to make this project were given to me by Island Batik and industry partners.

The Island Batik Ambassador challenge for July is Christmas in July with Accuquilt.  We were to use the Tree of Life die to create anything we liked and then gift it to someone.

This is the new Accuquilt Tree of Life die.  It makes a 14" square, an on-point pieced block with 73 pieces!  It's structured so there are no Y-seams ...

Sunday Stash: a bit of everything from Charm About You

I've been enjoying a return to what started as my 100 day project, hand piecing my Merrow Croft quilt (pattern by Margaret Mew). If you haven't done any hand piecing before, I have a how-to with lots of tips in my hand piecing tutorial. Using some of my treasured hand printed fabrics by Karen Lewis and Lucy Engels, I'm enjoying the neutral cool vibe of these pieces.

A hand holding small pieces of fabric, being sewn together with a running stitch. In the background is a circle shaped quilt block that has been hand pieced. Surrounding this are more small pieces of fabric, thread and embroidery scissors.

So I'm using up my stash but I'm also adding to it...

Granny square stitch along from Charm About You

Sew alongs and stitch alongs are always great fun! I enjoy seeing people make a pattern their own or even if they follow the pattern exactly, it's nice knowing you're creating something with others and it helps keep you on track for a finish.

cross stitched granny square on linen fabric, under that is a magnetic stork needle minder with a needle resting on it

The most recent ones I've joined in with were a year long but the Fat Quarter Shop is doing a summer Great Granny Squared-Along that is cute and simple. With patterns designed by Lori Holt, you can make a quilt, crochet or cross stitch piece. There's something for everyone and they make ...

paper fabric from Charm About You

Two pouches made from paper fabric, an embroidery patch, scissors and a spool of thread

Have you tried sewing with paper fabric? Also known as washable paper / vegan leather. It is often used for labels on denim and it is really fun to sew with. I have made a whole host of projects and tried a new to me brand of paper fabric that I'm going to share with you today. I also have another product to share, that allowed me to use some vintage embroidery transfers to create cute decorations. Heavily inspired by stationery these simple, modern makes are perfect to give as gifts... it might be is a long post, so grab ...

Crown Jewels from Sew Karen-ly Created...

It's no secret that I'm a big fan of HM Queen Elizabeth II, so I was thrilled when Aurifil announced they were releasing a thread collection in honour of the Platinum Jubilee.  The box reads: "The Platinum Jubilee Collection is Aurifil's humble tribute to Queen Elizabeth II.  This year, we celebrate her success and achievements throughout her 70 years of service.  Her fierce nature, resilience, and compassion have set a strong example, inspiring a new generation of leaders."

Inside the commemorative box is an array of  colours fit for a queen: neutrals, plus gold, silver, platinum and ...

breaking symmetry: Earth Day x Karen Nyberg from Charm About You

Creativity is a curious thing. It ebbs and flows. I have to be in the right mood. At times I want to follow a pattern, create my own patterns, stitch mindlessly, stitch with focus, colour inside the lines, scribble like nothing matters. It happens in the moment, in the mood. Recently I have realised how much I like having structure and routine in my life but without being confined or limited. This applies to my creativity too. One of the things that keeps me making and motivated is the Aurifil Artisan challenges. We are given a starting point, a theme ...

Plumeria ~ Flower of Sicily ~ Italian Color Builder Challenge from Curlicue Creations

This is Plumeria ~ Flower of Sicily.

Disclaimer:  The products used to make this project were given to me by Island Batik and industry partners.
It's my Island Batik Ambassador challenge quilt for March.  For this challenge, Aurifil thread supplied each of the Ambassadors with a Color Builders thread collection.  Each collection represents a different region of Italy.
I chose Sicily Yellow, partly because my family has roots in Sicily, and partly because I love these sunny bright yellows.  The three threads in this collection are 2105, 2115, and 1135.  They are all 50wt cotton.

I had a tough time ...

sunflowers from Charm About You

Like many of you I've sure, the war in the Ukraine has been a horrible shock and weighed heavily on my mind. As well as making donations to charity relief efforts, and there are excellent resources available online to research where to donate, the craft community responded with many designers creating patterns to donate their profits. There have also been calls to purchase digital items from creators on Etsy who are in the Ukraine, this is easy to do by selecting Ukraine in the shop location menu in filters. These may seem relatively small actions but it all helps ...

Pretty Pink Potholder Pattern in Annie's Quick and Easy Sewing from Curlicue Creations

Introducing:  Pretty Pink Potholder.  I made this with a combination of Island Batik Basics and Blenders Foundation fabrics.  I love the bright pinks and greens together.  I can't wait to hang this in my kitchen.

The pattern to sew the Pretty Pink Potholder is in this new Annie's Quick and Easy Sewing publication.  It's super easy to make; perfect for a beginner who is interested in trying applique and some quick strip piecing.  Let me just say as well, there are so many fabulous projects in this book that I want to try!  There are so many ...

Double Wedding Ring block from Charm About You

The Double Wedding Ring is a beautiful, traditional block that is associated with love, romance and of course marriage. For fabric lovers, this is such a fun block to play with, plan layouts and stitch! This is a bucket list block, one that all quilters will recognise and want to sew. It works wonderfully with either traditional or modern fabrics and is open to lots of variation within the pattern. I have made two blocks, one English Paper Pieced and one hand pieced (they are two different techniques) and will be demonstrating both methods in my upcoming online class. I ...

Sunflowers for Ukraine from Fat Quarter Shop's Jolly Jabber

Another angle of the Sunflower Cross Stitch Pattern on a bitty basket that can be done to honor the Ukraine

Bright blue and yellow sunflowers are symbols we have come to know and identify with the incredible spirit of the Ukrainian people. Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began, the need to hold up these symbols and recognize what is happening is stronger than ever.

If you’ve been keeping up with current events lately, like us, you’re probably wondering what you can do to help those in the Ukraine. Quilters and cross stitchers are innately generous and ready to serve. We join others in lending support and donating where we can help. And we know that donations are ...

Aurifil Color Builder Challenge - Innamorato from Sew Preeti Quilts

The March challenge is sponsored by Aurifil Threads.  Here are the simple guidelines to complete the challenge.

Create a piece inspired by your assigned Italian destination. It could be a city scene, a landscape, or something you associate with the location.

  • Size: 20” x 20” or under

  • Must use each of the 3 thread spools from the Color Builder box, how the thread is used is up to the maker!

  • Utilize thread painting, some type of appliqué or a combination of the two

I chose orange for two reasons.
1. I like orange :-)
2. I had leftover orange fabrics from ...

The 100 Day Project for me from Charm About You

I fell for the Merrow Croft pattern at the Festival of Quilts in 2019, where I met Margaret Mew and was enchanted by her work. My wonderful friend Michelle very kindly (and sneakily) bought me the pattern and gifted it to me later, just when I really needed something to smile about. It's taken me some time to start working on it but my plan was to finish a couple of other things first - they're getting there! With everything that's going on though I decided I really needed something that was no pressure, that I would enjoy ...

a piece of me scrappy pouch from Charm About You

A fabric zippered pouch made with patchwork fabric scraps and hand quilted with a cross hatch pattern
patchwork fabric scraps, the reverse is shown with the hand stitched seams and an open small tin of pins

Back with another make that was finished last year. I can never have enough storage, sewing or bags for sewing supplies. I made this pouch on a whim, using up pretty scraps and repurposing a little jewellery bag (the mustard yellow above), because it was so soft and it seemed wasteful to throw it away.

hand sewn fabric patchwork

I began hand piecing the scraps together, organised by size, starting with the smallest pieces. It grew until it was enough for a panel and then I repeated the process to make a back panel.

It was so fun, just stitching the fabrics together and ...

For Wee Bairn in Blue from Sew Karen-ly Created...

Last week, I showed you my newly released pattern called For The Wee Bairn.  It was made with a new collection called "Lace and Grace" from Island Batik.  I liked the quilt so much, I made it a second time, this one using a blue background and assorted scraps for the 9 patches.  The gorgeous snow this past weekend made a perfect backdrop for photography.

Other than using different fabrics, I followed my own directions exactly.
It's pretty amazing how quickly the blocks go together.
I quilt on my domestic sewing machine, so my quilts are pin basted.  This ...
