But is it Art? from Where Art & Life Meet

This is one of those questions that guarantees the page will remain blank, the canvas untouched, the design wall bare. This is a question best left unasked. It’s like asking, “Do I look fat?” Whatever the answer, it will do nothing to placate the nagging doubt. Ask 100 people how they define “art” and you… Continue reading But is it Art?

Finding One’s Voice from Where Art & Life Meet

In January I had the opportunity to go to one of Sue Spargo‘s fabulous workshops in Tucson, Arizona, a place I’d never been. While there I met some lovely people, one of whom was Anna Bates, who has a blog, Woolie Mammoth, a YouTube channel – Quilt Roadies, and blogs for The Quilt Show once… Continue reading Finding One’s Voice

Time for a New Piece from Roxane Lessa Fine Textile Art

Please click on the title to read the full post.

Hi Everyone!

The felted lighthouse piece is done!  It is called Ninini Lighthouse, which is the actual name of the lighthouse in Lihue, Kauai. I ended up using a facing and keeping the edges clean. I hope to mount it on a canvas or better yet, inside a shadow box frame.

Now it’s time to turn my attention to something new.

I am always attracted to tropical places, scenes, plants, people, etc. And I recently got to spend my birthday at such a place- Punta Cana in the Dominican ...

Happy New Year from Roxane Lessa Fine Textile Art

Please click on the title to read the full post.

Hi Everyone!

Happy New Year!

I discovered I had sold or given away many of my mid and small size pieces, so it’s time to add to the inventory for shows in the New Year.

So I have started a new needle felted landscape. The siren call of Hawaii still calls to me, and I must answer. I have many gorgeous photos of my trip to Kauai, and I plan to continue using them for inspiration. Here’s a gorgeous vista with a lighthouse.

There’s even a sea ...

Teaching and Making from Roxane Lessa Fine Textile Art

Please click on the title to read the full post.

Hi Everyone!

Welcome to the new readers!

A few weeks ago, I was able to teach the ladies of the American Sewing Guild in Greer, South Carolina. We had a terrific time making raw fused applique pieces.  My host, Phyllis, and the other ladies totally spoiled me while I was there, and I had a great time.  I was most impressed by the open mindedness of the students and how willing they were to try something out of their wheel house.  I hope this workshop has inspired them  to make ...

A Pregnant Post from Roxane Lessa Fine Textile Art

Please click on the title to read the full post.

Hi Everyone!

Welcome to the new readers!

Ok now that I have your attention- lol, no one I know is pregnant. But I am “birthing” a new piece. My friend Lori, has a midwifery school, and works with women who have had birth trauma.  This summer I reconnected with her and was delighted her programs were doing so well. Her work is life -changing and so important. So I was thrilled to be asked to create a new piece for her office loosely based on her logo. She asked me ...

Big Bass Bob- who’s that? from Roxane Lessa Fine Textile Art

Please click on the title to read the full post.

Hi Everyone!

Welcome to the new readers!

I have been commissioned to make a fish quilt.  Not just any fish- has to be a big bass fish. But here’s the back story….
My boyfriend is an avid bass fisherman. He has fished with his buddy, Bob for 20 + years.  As a result I have learned way more than I bargained for about bass fishing, :).  Well, as a gift to his buddy, he asked me to make him an art quilt that documents his love for bass fishing.  Also, I ...

Hawaiian Miniatures from Roxane Lessa Fine Textile Art

Please click on the title to read the full post.

Hi Everyone!

Welcome to the new readers!

When I was a kid growing up in Boston, I remember going to the MFA and seeing the Persian miniature collection. I was so enthralled with the tiny details, the brilliant jeweled colors and the stories they told. Here is an example of one:

So that memory inspired me to create some miniatures of my own.

I like to use little 6″ x 6″ x 1″ canvases to mount small treasures to sell at parties and to give as gifts.  They have been ...

Commission is Nearing Completion! from Roxane Lessa Fine Textile Art

Please click on the title to read the full post.

Hi Everyone!

Welcome to the new readers!

Yes! The commission of the gate to the South Carolina cemetary is nearing completion. For those of you who like numbers, I have kept track of the hours I put in so far – about 28 from start to finish. Yesterday I put it up on the wall for  damp blocking. This is a process where I pin the quilt at regular intervals and spray it down until it is damp.

Once it is dry, it is pretty flat and there are no more ...

Please click on the title to read the full post.

Hi Everyone!

Welcome to the new readers!

After finishing up the large orchid triptych, I am taking a break in my studio. This week for your viewing pleasure, I thought I would share something from the other part of my world. A video of the Royal Ballet prepping for Swan Lake. Many years ago, I completed my training in classical ballet at the Royal Ballet School and I often turn to this company for inspiration. In this video you will see the corps de ballet sharing what it is like ...

How Do I Finish the Orchid? from Roxane Lessa Fine Textile Art

Hi Everyone!

Welcome to the new readers!

How Do I Finish the Orchid?

Well, I wasn’t sure how to hang and finish this piece. Originally I had it in mind to make it a joined triptych. Like this:

I did like the white spaces between and around the piece on paper, but somehow, when it came time to make it that way- I didn’t like it. I started out by trimming around all three pieces, but left extra  around the main orchid to add white silk strips.

But ...

How to Quilt an Orchid from Roxane Lessa Fine Textile Art

Please click on the title to read the full post.

Hi Everyone!

Welcome to the new readers!

It’s been a hectic time finishing up rehearsals and recitals at the two studios  where I teach ballet. Oh, I didn’t mention I teach ballet now? Well, I do and so my art quilting has become more of a part time endeavor. Going back to my ballet roots has been rewarding, albeit tiring. And this older body does not always feel great demonstrating steps it used to do with ease. However, it is great working with the kids.

Anyway, this week ...

How to Use Glitter Thread from Roxane Lessa Fine Textile Art

Please click on the title to read the full post.

Hi Everyone!

Welcome to the new readers!

I just have a quick moment to catch you up on the new piece.  And yes, I decided on Glitter thread to quilt the side panels and all those crazy lines. I liked the shine, but for some reason it was breaking frequently- more than it should. I had my top tension loose. I used a #14 Topstitch needle and I went slowly. Still breaking. Then I remembered that this thread is wound horizontally. Why does that matter- how it’s wound? Because ...

Hi Everyone!

Welcome to the new readers!

Do you ever have a day dream about what your wish your life could be about? Or a dream at night that was so wonderful you had to write it down? As a part of a course I am taking, I created a visual dream map about a year and a half ago. It has been really interesting to see what has come to pass since then. I keep it in my bedroom, so I see it every morning when I wake up ...

Painting on Silk Part 2 from Roxane Lessa Fine Textile Art

Please click on the title to read the full post.

Hi Everyone!

Welcome to the new readers!

I’ve made some progress on the silk painting. Here is the mock up of the design again:
One of the things I discovered was to make the black darker I had to paint several layers and mix brown, blue and yellow into the black to make it richer and darker.  It took several tries. I used a wide flat brush to paint it on the silk which was ironed to the freezer paper pattern.
Next I mixed up some Pearl EX silver ...

Painting on Silk from Roxane Lessa Fine Textile Art

Please click on the title to read the full post.

Hi Everyone!

Welcome to the new readers!

I do love silk, and I love to paint on silk. I love the process, the sheen of the fabric- everything about it. It’s very meditative and I can do it for hours.  Once I recovered from my trip, I looked through some of the orchid pictures from S.F.  Which one to choose?  So many good ones!

I finally choose one for it’s gorgeous color and got to work creating a composition. I decided to go big! I choose a ...
