Hoedown from ... Cat Patches

Not as much happened in the vegetable garden as I'd hoped yesterday, but there was a little bit of progress. Mike had a stump grinder rented for a day, and he spent about three-fourths of the day grinding stumps. It all looks good now. I didn't take any pictures of the large holes in the ground, but they're covered over now. He wants to rototill the area where the butterfly bushes were to make way for the blueberries we'll plant, probably next week. We're also on the hunt for a few more plants to fill ...

Little Kitchen Things from ... Cat Patches

Eliza had her little trip into town yesterday. I dropped her off for service, and we won't see one another again for about a month. I'd like to say I left the shop feeling certain she'd have her mind right when I returned...think of it as sewing machine rehab. Possibly it was because of his face mask, but the guy who took her in didn't exactly inspire confidence. She's there for service, but I also described what happened and the noise it produced. Then, I wanted to see him write it down, but he ...

Good Day, Sunshine from ... Cat Patches

Our weekend was kind of a mixed bag of weather. Yesterday was one of our famous everything-in-a-day weather days here in the Pacific Northwest. There was sunshine, rain, hail, then more sunshine. Mike spent the day pressure-washing our decks and sidewalks. They were covered with a thin growth of green moss, and they were treacherous for walking. Very slippery. Everything looks good now. As sunlight waned, everything looked so pretty. So I took a little walk around, backing up from my usual close-up shots.

These are a couple of the azaleas. I was standing at the corner of the house ...

Little Sprouts from Cat Patches

As expected, I spent another day in the kitchen yesterday. It's all good. I like a good kitchen binge every now and then. It was worth it to have some beautiful bread and a pie to contribute to last night's little birthday party. You really want to see the pie, don't you? It is a thing of beauty.

It was delicious too. I cut it into eighths when I served it up, and so there are still three pieces left over for the three of us to have for dessert after dinner tonight. (Checks watch to see ...

Cooking and Baking from Cat Patches

There was no sewing yesterday. As expected, I spent most of the day in the kitchen. I made a 7-layer dip and a Texas Potato Salad. Both dishes are pretty spicy. I'll be spending today baking a lemon meringue pie. One of you observed that this sounds like food for a party...a small party, yes. We're breaking quarantine with our little family to celebrate three birthdays this week. There are only the five of us, and nobody is sick. We figure we'll be okay.

Yesterday was Mae's birthday. I got her a gift, but I ...

This and That from Cat Patches

It was kind of a slow day here at the Three Cats Ranch yesterday. We've been working fast and furiously in the yard, but then the rain came back. It kind of takes the wind out of our sails garden-wise. The next couple of days are supposed to be nicer, and so we'll be back outside some today. But first...grocery shopping. Sigh.

Yesterday, I decided to feed my sourdough starters. Matthew has requested another loaf of the sourdough cinnamon raisin bread, and how can I resist my youngest child...even if he is a grown man. I ...

Happy Easter, Everybody! from ... Cat Patches

Happy Easter Morning, my friends. We're having a quiet quarantined Easter here at the Three Cats Ranch. It will be just the three people who currently live here along with a spiral-sliced ham, maple baked beans, coleslaw, and deviled Easter eggs. Here's a picture of the deviled Easter eggs I made several years ago. They're kind of fun. You can read how to do this right here. My only addition to the instructions is to be sure to remove all the membrane when you peel the eggs so you don't end up with white spots.

So ...

This and That from ... Cat Patches

My day was filled with a bunch of different activities yesterday. I first finished off the Appalachian Memories block. This is the "Spinning Star" block.

It's the 9th of 12 blocks. Here are all the blocks I have for this quilt so far.

When that was finished, Smitty and I got out for a walk. We chattered at a few birds and squirrels and ate some grass. He was also nibbling at some dandelion greens. They're very nutritious, and you should always eat your greens.

While we were out, we checked on the peonies. They're all doing ...

A New Scrappy from Cat Patches

It was a quiet day here yesterday. Self-quarantining hasn't really caused me to break stride at all. My days are pretty much as they've always been, with the addition of Mike sitting in the chair across from me. He was working up until we left on our trip south this past December. Now he's home...hopefully, for good. My biggest concern is my weekly (or so) trips to the grocery store and worry about what will be there (or not be there) when I arrive. Grocery shopping has always been the biggest annoyance in my life, and ...

Here's What's Cooking from ... Cat Patches

Smitty has developed a strategic plan to deal with his free-loading housecatmate. Their morning routine has always been to wake up the people, chomp on the morning treats conveniently dispensed by the now-awake people, beg to be let into the clubhouse (that's their space between the basement and main levels of the house), take a morning nap in the clubhouse, come back upstairs and beg for more treats. Only, since we've been home, Smitty has worked out a new plan. He first begs for the clubhouse to be opened and lures Sadie down there too. Once Sadie is ...
