Bendigo Laceworks 9, 10 from Virtual Quilter

Have just cleaned out this project of all the dust, and painted over the rust. The original colours were brown on gold.

If I lived in Bendigo I would paint the house in  a light colour, with green wrought iron around the verandas to keep it looking fresh during the heat of summer.

Anna Karena 35, 36 from Virtual Quilter

Old project file, add new colours …. But no quilting in the first new design.

The second new design in the project has quilting motifs added.

Amazing what can be done early in the morning with a coffee and Electric Quilt.

Compared to the old colours these look like a newly washed quilt!

Brandis Street Blocks 35, 36 from Virtual Quilter

Every time I open this file I see old fashioned blocks in old fashion quilt designs, but I love old fashioned stuff. The cupboard which hold up our TV was made from timber used in a crate used when household goods were shipped to Australia from England in the late 18oos. It still has a bit of a lean to fit the dirt floor of the kitchen of the house I grew up in.

The lino floor covering I found in a kitchen drawer in the 1970s house we now live in is possibly a hundred years younger than that ...

White on Bright 13, 14 from Virtual Quilter

I should have given notice that you need sunglasses  before opening this post!

Simple colour scheme, some applique, and plenty of room for quilting. It doesn’t get much simpler than that, but the results can be stunning.

I love the second one!

Kelly’s Custom Quilts 45, 46 from Virtual Quilter

Any pieced block constructed of squares and rectangles can be used as  a quilt layout in Electric Quilt. This series of designs doesn’t have my usual variety of blocks as I wanted to concentrate  on  making best use of the assorted block shapes.

It has been about 12 months since I played in this part of  my favourite toy, and I think I should start more projects with a wider variety of blocks, and irregular layouts.

Of these two, I like the first one, and love the second!

Fairy Dots 11, 12 from Virtual Quilter

Beautiful!

Smaller, but no less beautiful.

Job for an embroidery machine perhaps!

Rose Roxanne 9, 10 from Virtual Quilter

The roses I have in my garden have flowered quite a bit this year, but I have to be quick to admire them … they are usually burnt by the end of the day.

At least these virtual roses will survive this summer’s hot weather.

Gran’s New Beads 27, 28 from Virtual Quilter

Love the colours, love the style of applique with leaf shapes as well as round and sometimes oval shaped beads.

Love the cross in the centre of the second one … and I am not going to try to pick a favourite amongst these two.

Outback Banksia 5, 6 from Virtual Quilter

HAPPY AUSTRALIA DAY

I am celebrating with some Banksia Blocks … the different Banksia shrubs have several very different flower shapes in a variety of colours including assorted shades of yellow, orange and red.

The settings I have used are much more formal than the Aussie bush … perhaps the influence of large cities around the coast.

Around the country we will celebrate with BBQs, swimming at the beach or local and private pools, watching cricket and tennis live and on TV … it is going to be a hot day so I will be watering my garden and trying to keep in ...

Helen’s Hybrids 7, 8 from Virtual Quilter

I always like space to show off the quilting, and this is one of the few project files where I have used pieced block designs as quilting motifs on an applique quilt design.

The first of today’s pair of designs shows off the quilting just the way I like it.

In the second design I love the way the quilting motifs frame the applique.

There are not many designs in this file … I think I might find some time today to add some more for future blog posts.

Floppy Petals 9, 10 from Virtual Quilter

Oh, WOW!!

All Floral Cross  block designs can be modified over and over, to create a very wide variety of  blocks for use in quilt designs.  In most of my quilt designs using the result of twisting and turning a basic Floral Cross it is hard to find a basic  Floral Cross.

The centre block of the first design is nearly a basic cross, but with  a little bit of extra.

The two designs have a mixture of borders using the same flower as all the other blocks, but modified to do a different job.

The first is my favourite ...

Aussie Formal Flora 5, 6 from Virtual Quilter

Aussie waratahs and one of many species of wattle feature in the first design.

The second has another wattle plus some gum blossom.

Jeparit Jewels 9, 10 from Virtual Quilter

I looked and looked for several minutes until I worked out what was different about the first design.

Finally worked out. It has 36 blocks   … an even number across and vertically … something I rarely do in real or virtual designs.

I left my favourite  until last today!

There is space for 25 applique blocks, but I left four of them blank for the quilting to shine, though there is a lot of space in the applique blocks in this design for the quilting to show.

Quilting Thread and Beads 31, 32 from Virtual Quilter

The first design  is neat and tidy, and rather pretty. I have used a multi coloured fabric for the beads, but they could be several different fabrics, scraps … or carefully selected combination of colours and prints.

This is one of my favourite  project files … one of many to be honest … but it has been unopened for over a year.

There are over 300 block  designs in the file, but only 40 quilt designs, but now that I have it open  there just might be a few added in the near future … probably before you see these two.

The second design ...

Baker’s Dozen 61, 62 from Virtual Quilter

I started this project file with a Baker’s Dozen of Electric Quilt blocks nearly 7 years ago. It has been my favourite series of designs ever since.

For those unfamiliar with the term, a Baker’s Dozen is a regular dozen plus one, though I nearly called it a Butcher’s Dozen after I added another extra block. I also modified some of the blocks a bit too.

I love the way the floral cross blocks link up forming a crooked border between the centre and corner areas of the second design today. Must try that in some other ...

Fiddlebobs OP 25, 26 from Virtual Quilter

There are some intriguing little variations of the basic block in the first design today, which I created to echo what happened when half of one of the blocks disappeared when added to the filler blocks around the blocks set on point.

The second design looks very busy, partly caused by the quilting motifs which would be more discreetly coloured in a real quilt.

Lots of fiddly applique in this project file, so I am glad we have fusible webbing and sewing machines, unlike when I started … we did have sewing machines, but many of us had yet to update ...

Garden Festival 29, 30 from Virtual Quilter

I wish my real garden was as neat and tidy as the virtual garden! The real one is also looking a bit sun burned too.

At least my virtual gardens survive the Aussie summer looking green and healthy, and don’t require water every few days.

Vera’s Variety 7, 8 from Virtual Quilter

A very interesting design. I usually concentrate on square quilt designs, partly because we have a Queen size bed, and a queen size can be made a bit bigger for a king size bed. I am guessing that today’s designs would be suitable for a King single.

I think that with so many tiny pieces to applique it would make sense to embroider the blocks … is there a machine which will embroider 12 inch blocks?

Aunt Annie’s Album 7, 8 from Virtual Quilter

There are some weird and wonderful shapes in this project file, which makes it easy to design some very different applique designs and quilting motifs.

I like the second design, but my favourite is the first one.

Floral Starburst 7, 8 from Virtual Quilter

I am not too sure that they are star bursts … they could be fireworks … or is that just New Year celebrations leaving a mark on my vision?

It has taken me a while to pick out my favourite for today, but I finally decided it is the second design.
