No Y-Seam 60-Degree Triangles! Medallion Star Pattern Tutorial from Quilt Addicts Anonymous

Today we are taking the fear out of 60-degree triangles and diamonds with Medallion Star, a Quilt Addicts Anonymous pattern that is assembled with NO Y-Seams!

Medallion Star is a great way to show off all the fabrics in a line you love or as a way to use up some of your stash. The pattern is fast and easy to assemble, with the dramatic look coming from how you use color to make the star change in hue as it expands out.

The pattern uses 17 fabrics, and features full-color instructions with a numbered assembly diagram so you won ...

Silent Garden & Harpsichord Blocks … and Getting Ready to Print from Quilt Obsession

I know, I know! I thought I was going to stick with the Stormy Seas blocks but I decided to finish the blocks for row 3 of the brown & blue Silent Garden top. This is block 7 for row 3 and is definitely one of my favourites of these stars. One more to go and then all the blocks for that row will be done.

Its back, after pressing and grading of seams.

Then, of course, I had to make a Harpsichord block. This time a pretty medium orange one.

Ring in the Silent Gardens from Quilt Obsession

DWR Ring IMG_2015wtmk

I decided to get that partially finished DWR ring finished and added to the stack. I need to start adding the finished rings to the top which has barely been begun to see how many more complete rings I need to make. I know I printed everything I need to make the top the size I had in mind, but I didn’t keep any notes of my plan – so now I’ve got to work that out.

Preparing Alternate Silent Garden Rows from Quilt Obsession

I’m past the halfway point of sewing the blocks for the third rows of both the B&B Silent Garden and Tranquil Garden tops, so I decided it was time to pull out a bunch of the stars for the Not So Silent Garden top that I’ll use for its first and other of its alternate rows.

NSSG Alternate Block Pieces IMG_1985wtmk

I printed more of the irregular hexagons and kites and now have quite a few ready to sew into alternate blocks. Not all of these will be in its first alternate row, but I’m hoping that I’ll have enough ...

Harpsichords in Silent Gardens with a Pickled Lady from Quilt Obsession

That title definitely made me laugh.

B&B Silent Garden 3-5 IMG_1853wtmk

Lots of different blocks in this post! First the 5th block of row 3 of the B&B Silent Garden top.

Tranquil Garden 3-5 IMG_1846wtmk

Then the 5th block of row 3 of the Tranquil Garden top. This one is definitely my favourite of the three Silent Garden blocks in this post.

NSSG 9 IMG_1873wtmk

The third variation, another block for the Not So Silent Garden.

They’re all pressed and their seams have been graded.

Seven Blocks for Five Tops and Breaking News!! from Quilt Obsession

I’m trying to find different headlines for the posts about these blocks, with varying degrees of success. Looking for the breaking news? You’ll have to scroll down.

Brown and Blue Silent Garden 3-4 IMG_1842wtmk

First another brown & blue Silent Garden block – this will be block 4 of row 3. I really like the movement in this block!

Tranquil Garden 3-4 IMG_1836wtmk

Then block 4 of row 3 of the  Tranquil Garden top.

NSSG Block IMG_1820wtmk

And a Not So Silent Garden block. This is definitely one of my favourites so far of these blocks. I have no idea where it will end up in the top as I need to get the ...

Gardens Are Growing from Quilt Obsession

Silent Gardens are growing, that is. We’ve been waiting for a calm day out on the roof garden to take these two photographs. While there have been many nice days, it’s almost always breezy out there and some days it’s just way too windy for this purpose.

Two rows of B&B Silent Garden IMG_1923wtmk

Which was taking photographs of some blocks. First, those that are in the first two rows of B&B Silent Garden sewn together.

I’ve had them sewn together for a while, but couldn’t find a good way ...

A Pickled Lady in the Silent Gardens? from Quilt Obsession

I couldn’t resist that title because really – a pickled lady in a silent garden? The thought makes me laugh. But before I get to the new Pickled Lady, there are a couple of Silent Garden and Harpsichord blocks to show.

B&B Silent Garden 3-3 IMG_1816wtmk

First is the third block for row 3 of the B&B Silent Garden top.

A Harpsichord in a Not So Silent Garden? from Quilt Obsession

When I realized I was going to blog about finished Harpsichord and NSSG blocks, the thought of a harpsichord in a Not So Silent Garden just made me laugh.

NSSG IMG_1758wtmk

This is the seventh of the NSSG blocks I’ve done. I’ve finally started to keep count and think I may stop after another three or four and start joining some of these into row 1 and then sort out what will be in row 2. They’re just so much fun to sew that I don’t want to stop.

Lots of Silent Garden & Other Blocks from Quilt Obsession

While I may have been quiet, there has been a fair amount of quilt-related activity.

The first thing I did was to get out a couple of stacks of pieces for the various Silent Garden variations I’m making as I had decided to make all the four-patch units of the hexagons, kite and triangles needed for the third rows of the brown & blue and Tranquil Garden tops and for more Not So Silent Garden blocks. Once those units are made, adding them to the stars is very quick as it’s lots of lovely continuous sewing.

Flower Power! from Quilt Obsession

I’m not talking about this – but when I first saw the title of the quilt in Millefiori Quilts 3, I couldn’t help but think of the psychedelic colours and vans painted with flowers of the late ’60s and early ’70s and oh, the music. Funny how two little words can be SO evocative!!

But no, I’m not talking about that.

Instead, I’m talking about this – the centre of Willyne Hammerstein’s Flower Power quilt from Millefiori Quilts 3. When I first got the book, I was immediately drawn to this quilt. I could see loads of ...

Back to Piecing the Blocks from Quilt Obsession

I spent hours laying out the stars for the brown & blue and the Tranquil Garden tops until I was happy with their placement. I ended up using the bed as my design wall – but with the door shut so no little paws were helping. Now that that’s done, I’m sewing them in order.

B&B Block 3-1 IMG_1724wtmk

This will be the top block in row 3 of the brown & blue Silent Garden quilt top.

Back of B&B Block 3-1 IMG_1725wtmk

I’m grading all the seams as I go, but now I’m tending to grade the darker fabric of a pair of seams. I decided to do ...

Tranquil Garden Row 2 Blocks from Quilt Obsession

It is much quicker to get the blocks ready for the vertical alternate rows of the Silent Garden tops. It seems it’s so much quicker that I almost forget to take pictures before they’re joined, as I did for the brown & blue ones. For the Tranquil Garden blocks I did remember – but only just in time!

Tranquil Garden 2-1 IMG_1458wtmk

And I am not picking favourites.

Because it’s impossible.

Except – I think that maybe out of the blocks in row 2, this one may just be my favourite.

Although – hmm, maybe this – no, I am not starting down this rocky road ...

Alternate Blocks from Quilt Obsession

Once I had enough blocks for the first vertical row of the brown & blue Silent Garden top, I needed to make the alternate blocks for the second row. I got a little carried away and  had joined them into that second row before I remembered to take pictures!

Brown & Blue IMG_1480wtmk

I’m not trying to choose favourites among these.

Brown & Blue 7IMG_1474wtmk

Because every time I think I know which is my favourite, I look at the next and it is.

Brown & Blue 6IMG_1476wtmk

This one is a little less dramatic than some of the others.

Brown & Blue 5IMG_1475wtmk

This one is also a bit less showy.

Lots and Lots of Blocks from Quilt Obsession

I’ve been busy and got five blocks done for this post.

Blue Kona Bay Star IMG_1312wtmk

First a Tranquil Garden block.

Blue Kona Bay Star back IMG_1313wtmk

And its back.

Kona Bay fabric with ruler IMG_1439wtmk

I had promised I’d post a photo of the fabric I used to fussy cut/print the diamonds for the stars in the Tranquil Garden blocks. Here it is with a ruler which shows, I hope, the 11 3/8″ repeat. Finding fabrics with a manageable repeat is what makes Inklingo no-waste fussy cutting/printing so much fun!!

Brown & Blue Star IMG_1316wtmk

Then another brown & blue Silent Garden block.

Brown & Bluel Star backIMG_1317wtmk

And its back. I still haven’t found a picture of the brown and ...

Organized and Ready to Sew! from Quilt Obsession

Over the past week or so I’ve been getting a lot more of the pieces ready to sew for the three Silent Garden tops along with the 9-patch blocks and the Harpsichord quilt. Now that’s done I’m organized and ready to sew!

Tranquil Garden Staging Box IMG_1550wtmk

Each of the projects has its own staging box. One for the Tranquil Garden quilt.

Brown & Blue Staging Box IMG_1553wtmk

One for the brown and blue Silent Garden project. I have to come up with a name for this one other than just brown & blue.

One for the Not So Silent Garden. I still have lots to print for this ...

More Not So Silent Garden Blocks from Quilt Obsession

I had to get it out of my system – some very careful seam ripping was necessary as I really wanted to see how different the wild floral kaleidoscope star would look with my final choice of fabrics for these stars.

First NSSG 2 IMG_1503wtmk

Remember this one?

NSSG 4 IMG_1574wtmk

What a difference! The lighter, brighter batik for the kites and the pink triangles make this cheerful and far more vibrant, which is exactly the look I was going for, for the wild floral kaleidoscope stars.

NSSG 5 IMG_1570wtmk

I think this one might have looked rather sedate with the other fabrics – not now!

NSSG 3 IMG_1555wtmk

Then I just had to make ...

Change is Coming to the Not So Silent Garden! Again!! from Quilt Obsession

First NSSG 2 IMG_1503wtmk

I finished the second Not So Silent Garden block.

First NSSG 2 Back IMG_1511wtmk

Pressed it. Graded the seams. But something just wasn’t working – my Not So Silent Garden needed to be more colourful and vibrant, not muted in any way.

New NSSG 1 IMG_1534wtmk

So back to one of my original choices I went and made one new Not So Silent Garden block using the blue batik I had initially thought of for the kites. This time I decided on a bright pink for the triangles and a background fabric for the hexagons that has a rosy pink tiny dot. And I was much, much happier with ...

Beginning the Not So Silent Garden from Quilt Obsession

Once I thought I’d settled on the fabrics to use with the wild floral kaleidoscope stars, I couldn’t resist getting started. Off to the ironing board I went, as I wanted to print enough of the hexagon, kites and little triangles to make the four-patch units that surround the stars for at least one block. When I looked at the wrong side of the metallic fabric that I’d picked out for the kites, I decided I wanted to try using the wrong side as well as the metallic side. So first I made 12 of the four-patch ...

Auditioning Fabric and Trying to Resist Temptation! from Quilt Obsession

I’ve been auditioning fabrics for the wild floral kaleidoscope stars on and off since I last showed them. Looking at the stars made me think about what the fabric had looked like before I started.

So I looked back in my blog and was happy to find I had posted this photo of it. It turned into some fabulous kaleidoscope stars.  Now I only have small scraps of it left so wouldn’t have been able to take a photo that showed just what it looked like to begin with.

First I tried the stars against this blue batik ...
