Flip Flop Quilt from High Road Quilter

It's been a flip flop kind of a week for me, so I thought it was appropriate that I make these flip flop blocks for Stitching Sisters. It is another one of the kits I picked up when I went last time. I had originally thought I should give them a finished top and return the other kits and tell them that I got carried away, but I decided to try to make another quilt top since it is taking me so long to get one back to them.

I was expecting strips of fabric that I could strip ...

Week 37 of 2019 - More Stitching and Stashing from Life In Pieces

It's been another busy week, topped with a hectic Saturday.  I'm hoping that Sunday is much more relaxed. Fitting in even just 15 minutes of stitching time each day has been challenging.

On top of the busy schedule, the autumn allergy season is here. It's a few weeks early due to the wet summer and it's miserable.  Evening naps to dissipate the sinus headaches have taken another bite out of my evening stitching time. Even with that I did manage to work in my 15 minutes every day last week.

15 minute days/week = 7/7 ...

Week 36 of 2019: Stitching and De-Stashing from Life In Pieces

The week was fast, but thankfully the weekend has allowed for a slower pace.  Sometimes I find that it's harder to make my way to the sewing room when there's no time pressure.  I can spend another hour on the computer or reading or whatever.  Then before I know it it's bedtime and I haven't even walked into the sewing room.  When the schedule is full, it forces me to consciously allocate my sewing time.  How about you? If you have lots of time do you have problems directing yourself to the sewing room to get ...

Taking the Scenic Route to Declutter Sewing Room from High Road Quilter

My sewing machine, Opal, is at the spa this week. She deserves a rest after all the work I put her through - sewing practically every day. I was waiting to find a good time to let her go, until I realized there would never be a good time to let her go.

The original plan was to sew the binding on the drunkard's path quilt and then hand stitch the binding while she was away.  If I ran out of work (haha), I could prepare more applique blocks for 1857 or another quilt.  It turns out that I didn ...

Week 35 of Stitching and Stashing from Life In Pieces

If you live in the US, I hope you are enjoying your three day holiday weekend.  Ours got off to a rocky start with a text Friday afternoon that the Scientist in Training's car wouldn't start.  So My Guy coached her and her roommate over the phone on how to jump start a vehicle. Then yesterday the poor girl had to make another trip to urgent care for a very nasty bug bite that looked to be getting infected. It was looking much better when she went to bed last night.  Hopefully the rest of the weekend will ...

Finished Quilting Drunkard's Path from High Road Quilter

When I looked at the list of my quilts that I have been keeping ever since I started quilting, the second UFO was the drunkard's path quilt.  The top had already been pieced and it just needed to be sandwiched and quilted.  At the time I made the quilt, I really had a hard time doing any free motion quilting, and I wasn't all that good at straight line quilting either.

I can't say I am better at quilting now, but I have more confidence and less fear. Since this is an older quilt with dated fabrics ...

Week 34 of 2019 - Stitching and Destashing from Life In Pieces

Week 34 of 2019 wasn't one of the smoothest we've ever had.  Health issues took center stage, one of which landed the Scientist in Training in the emergency room.  Poor girl caught a stomach bug the weekend before classes started back up. By Wednesday she was dehydrated and had a bad case of the shakes because she wasn't able to eat.  Thankfully after 48 hours on clear liquids, probiotics, and some sleep without the shakes she's just about back to normal.  So my stitchy week didn't really go to plan.  How about yours?

The emergency ...

Week 33 of 2019 - Stitching and Stashing from Life In Pieces

Hot, humid and heat advisory are pretty descriptive of this last week's weather.  That will be the pattern till at least mid-week.  Definitely a good reason to spend more than 15 minutes in the sewing room each day.

It wasn't hard to stay in and sew this week.

15 minute days/week = 7/7 days
15 minute days/August = 16/17 days
15 minute days/2019 = 202/229 days
Success rate = 88.21%

You can link up below to share how your stitchy week went.

As far as the stash report, well, it's not as good. I ...

Changing Thought Patterns from High Road Quilter

I've been thinking differently lately, as an experiment, or maybe because my mind has melted in the heat..

First of all, when I was making the Fuschia Fairy quilt, I didn't plan it out.  I thought of an idea, implemented it, and waited for the next idea to show up so I could implement it.  I embraced each idea as it came along and did it without thinking about other possibilities.

That is the same way I am quilting the Drunkard's Path quilt. Yes, I am still quilting that monstrosity of a lap quilt.  I think it ...

Week 32 of 2019: Stitching and Stashing from Life In Pieces

You can tell it's August in Oklahoma, the storm warnings have been replaced with heat advisories on the weather app. It's been miserably hot and humid.  Definitely a good week to spend more than 15 minutes in the sewing room each evening.

Having said that, I didn't quite manage that every night this week.

15 minute days/week = 6/7 days
15 minute days/August = 9/10 days
15 minute days/2019 = 195/222 days
Success rate = 87.84%

Not a bad week on the stitching front. The one night I didn't sew, I read a ...

Week 31 of 2019 Stitching and De-stashing from Life In Pieces

It's been a slow weekend here at Life in Pieces.  The Scientist in Training is home. She just wanted a weekend to "be" and recharge with a bit of being home. I remember those weekends from graduate school (I lived at home during my undergrad studies).  Now my preferred recharging strategy is to spend an hour in the sewing room each evening.  If I can't spend an hour, sneaking in 15 minutes of stitching time helps smooth out the rough edges from the work day.  I've always considered my personal goal to get in 15 minutes of ...

Quilting Ethnic Drunkard's Path Quilt from High Road Quilter

After finishing the commission quilt and the mini quilt of the month, I could finally resume the quilting that had slowed almost to a standstill when the busy time at work happened.  I decided to pick up on quilting the drunkard's path quilt. I call it the ethnic drunkard's path quilt, because I already have another drunkard path, and this one has a more exotic feel to it, but I don't know the art in these countries enough to know where exactly to place it - Morocco, Spain, Persia, etc. The other one is really a leftovers of ...

Work 30 of 2019: Stitching and Stashing from Life In Pieces

The week started with a business trip and ended with some much needed yard work.  So it's been another busy week where stitching just didn't happen a couple of days.  Hopefully you had better luck finding 15 minutes to stitch each day this week.

The week wasn't a total loss for me, but I did miss the two days I was on the road.

15 minute days/week = 5/7 days
15 minute days/July = 24/27 days
15 minute days/2019 = 182/208 days
Success rate = 87.50%

My plan for today is an almost nothing ...

Week 29 of 2019: Stitching and De-Stashing from Life In Pieces

With all the heat advisories, this was a perfect weekend to just stay in and stitch.  Unfortunately, that hasn't been my plan for the weekend, well really not for the whole week.  It's been another challenging one on the finding 15 minutes to stitch most days.  Hopefully it's been easier to find time to play in your sewing room this week.

Work took up several evenings this week.  It was hard to make the trek up the stairs to the sewing room a couple of nights, but I did manage to eek out 15 minutes each night ...

15 Minutes to Stitch from High Road Quilter

A little belated recap of my stitching week.

15 Minutes to Stitch: Week 29

For the last couple of weeks ending Sunday, I started and have been working on my mini quilt of the month. I thought about not making one this month, due to all the quilts I have already started this year and still want to start now, but I decided it was better for me to start while it was early enough to make a good showing, instead of starting it at the last minute to get it in by the end of the month.  I am ...

Week 28 of 2019: Stitching Stuff from Life In Pieces

It's been a busy week that went incredibly fast.  Unfortunately there was enough going on that getting into my sewing room didn't go so smoothly.  Finding 15 minutes to stitch each day was definitely a challenge. Hopefully your week was more productive on that front.

Work came home one night, so it was hard to work in some stitching time while working to meet a deadline.  Consequently, it wasn't a perfect week on the sewing front.

15 minute days/week = 6/7 days
15 minute days/July = 12/13 days
15 minute days/2019 = 170/194 days ...

Week 27 of 2019: Stashing and Stitching from Life In Pieces

It's been a busy 4th of July weekend.  We've spent the holiday with family, which has been really relaxing and fun.  My niece has a new beau who hadn't been exposed to the whole family at once, we fixed that over the holiday. As far as I know, he survived.

It's been a challenge to fit in some stitching time here and there, but it turned out to be a pretty good week in terms of getting in my 15 minutes of stitching time each day.  How did you do?

Here's my stats for the ...

2019 Quilting Ambitions - Midyear Check In from Life In Pieces

So the first half of the year is over (wow that was fast).  I just finished performance reviews at work, basically a check in meeting with the supervisor to say what's on track, what's not and how do you get back on track. I don't have a quilty supervisor (thank goodness!), but it does help my accountability to post on the blog how well the quilty year is going.  Back in December 2018, I participated in Quilting Jetgirl's 2019 Planning Party by posting a list of my 2019 Quilting Ambitions.  So what's working and what ...

Week 26 of 2019: Stitching and Stashing from Life In Pieces

Summer is definitely here. It's not quite scorching out yet, but we are definitely getting there.  It was a good week to take refuge in the coolness of the sewing room. That made it easy to get in some good stretches of stitching time this week.  Did you have an easy time finding your way to your sewing room for some stitching time this week?

I didn't have to bring work home this week, which made for a productive week in the sewing room.

15 minute days/week = 7/7 days
15 minute days/June = 21/29 days ...

Week 25 of 2019: Stitching Stuff from Life In Pieces

We are just a week shy of being half way through 2019.  Can you believe that?  I'm definitely not as far along with the UFO list as I'd hoped to be.  Unfortunately, finding stitching time has been harder this year than it was last year.  Some days finding even just 15 minutes has been difficult.

This week was another rough one on the work front.  Work had to come home two nights so I could finish off the midyear reviews.  That didn't leave much time/energy to fit in some stitching time those evenings.  Here's the ...
